SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JANUARY 19, 2020

A recent poll taken by the well known Pew organization said that only 31% of Catholics

surveyed believe in the Church’s teaching about the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, a key teaching our religion has proclaimed since the time of Jesus. Nearly 70% of the poll’s responders admitted to not understanding the teaching, whether they hadn’t been successfully taught it or whether they regarded it just as symbolism. And so, for the next several weeks I will be reminding you of this doctrine’s meaning, importance and lineage, starting with its New Testament origins. The sixth chapter of St. John’s Gospel contains what is often called the Bread of Life Discourse, a teaching Jesus presented at the synagogue in Capernaum, his main base in his early ministry. It deserves an extended citation. In it he said:

“I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” (Jn 6, 48-51)

Some of his listeners, not only firm adherents to traditional Jewish teachings but even some of Jesus’s own disciples, recoiled from this startling declaration, asking:

“How can this man give us (his) flesh to eat?” Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.” (Jn 6, 52-58)

Then many of his disciples who were listening said, “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, “Does this shock you? … As a result of this, many (of)

    (continued above)

    FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. (Jn 6, 60-61⦁66)

Jesus then turned to his inner circle, the twelve apostles, and asked them if his words were going to drive them away too, and Peter responded with an act of faith that was as powerful as the one Mt 16, 13-19 recorded:

Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” (Jn 6, 67-69)

Other New Testament passges, sometimes called the “Institution narratives,” recall the words of Jesus as he blessed bread and wine at the Last Supper, which are the basis of the words of Consecration used at every Mass. Matthew’s account reads:

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and giving it to his disciples said, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins.” (Mt 26, 26-28)

Mk 14, 22-25 and Lk 22, 15-20 have similar recollections, as does St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians in 1 Cor 11, 23-25, a passage that also reminds us that Jesus commanded his followers, “Do this in memory of me.” (See also 1 Cor 10, 16). Next week we will examine writings of the Church’s great teachers from the era right after the time of the New Testament’s composition up to the conclusion of the age of the Fathers of the Church in the middle of the eighth century.
