STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Do you think I have come to give you peace on Earth? No, I tell you, but rather divisions.” LUKE 12:51 Living a stewardship lifestyle means stepping out of our comfort zone when needed. Many of us like to play it safe, not cause waves, stay in the middle of the road. In today’s world we are called to be informed and take a stance for life, marriage and religious liberty.

TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ AUGUST 14, 2016

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

The Olympic Games are now going on in Brazil, with competition in many events, including some relatively mild ones such as badminton, canoeing, trampoline and water

polo, which only truly dedicated fans of those sports can hope to keep track of successfully. Even water polo wasn't very tame in 1956. In the match between the Soviet Union and Hungary during the Hungarian Revolution’s attempt to overthrow Communist control, the pool got visibly bloody. Some sports have been part of the Olympic lineup since ancient times, while others have come and gone. The infamous Emperor Nero decided to compete in the 66-67 A.D. Olympics personally, and journeyed to Greece with more than a thousand carriages at his disposal. The horses had golden bridles, and the imperial contingent dined on food served on silver trays studded with diamonds. On his way to the games, Nero collected 1,808 awards for acting, singing and racing. He then entered the chariot race and, during it, fell out of his vehicle, finishing last, which did not prevent him from being awarding the gold medal. At the banquet that celebrated his victory, he commented that “the Greeks alone know how to appreciate me.” But Nero was far from being all fun and joviality. Besides arranging the murder of his own mother, he falsely blamed Christians for a disastrous fire that destroyed a good part of Rome and, according to the

(continued above)

historian Tacitus, had a number of them set on fire to serve as torches in his garden, quipping that it was the first time Christianity had shed light on anything. St. Peter and St. Paul became martyrs during Nero’s gruesome reign. The early Church knew both the bad and the good when it came to dealing with government. Our religion quickly experienced great growth after the Gospel was proclaimed in the great cities of the Roman Empire. And the orderly stability of the Roman Peace (“Pax Romana”), as well as the safe and easy travel made possible by the Empire’s excellent roads and efficient shipping also favored the rapid expansion of the Faith. An ancient pagan writer, Publius Aelius Aristides, described these advantages well:

Cannot every man go wherever he wishes, without fear? Aren’t all our harbors busy? Aren’t the mountains just as safe as the cities? There are no rivers that have not been bridged, no ocean gulfs that cannot be crossed. Even the sandy road to Egypt presents no obstacles; no terrifying mountain pass, no torrents or savages block the way. Homer once prayed: “The world should be open to all men.” That wish is now realized. To be the Emperor’s subject—to be a Roman—is the only passport one needs.

Many times in its history the Church has had to take the bad with the good. It is still that way now.

NEW OFFERINGS FOR BIBLE STUDY

ON-LINE STUDY This academic school year, our parish will be offering a Bible Study that will fit into everyone's schedule. For the first time, we will be offering a Bible Study that can be done on your own at home. This eight-part study provides the easiest way to understand the Bible. Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible makes the complex simple. It helps you uncover the story woven throughout Scripture so that you can get the “big picture” of the Bible and understand what it is all about. There is minimal 'homework' and each session includes a 30 minute DVD lesson. Everyone can benefit from this study, but parents of school-aged children are particularly encouraged to participate in order to help with their children’s religious education.

TRADITIONAL WEEKLY GROUP SESSIONS Our Newest Study is called Follow Me: Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John (8 weeks). Others studies for this year include Acts of the Apostles (20 weeks), James (10 weeks), and A Biblical Walk through the Mass (5 weeks). All studies meet weekly for 90 minutes on the parish grounds (Parish Life Center or Jackson Room).

HOW TO SIGN UP Sign-up for all bible studies, including the new on-line study, as well as the more traditional weekly studies, will take place on the weekend of August 27-28 in the Harrison Street lobby of the Church. Study guide costs range from $20-30. To find out more about this parish-based Bible Study Program, please visit ascensionpress.com or contact Pat Fakharzadeh at 201-599-2123 or email her at [email protected]

“We simply cannot choose between our care for the elderly poor and our faith.”

When a blind, paralyzed, elderly widow needed a place to live, Jeanne Jugan gave up her own bed so that the woman could have a comfortable place to sleep during her last years on earth.

What began as a small community of a few single women taking in poor strangers in rural France in the early 1800s became an order now known as the Little Sisters of the Poor.

The Little Sisters carry on the work of their founder, who was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009. The Little Sisters’ mission is “to offer the neediest elderly of every race and religion a home where they will be welcomed as Christ, cared for as family and accompanied with dignity until God calls them to himself.”

Continuing the tradition of St. Jeanne Jugan, the Little Sisters beg for all that they need to take care of the elderly poor, and they do not accept guaranteed forms of income.

The Little Sisters established roots in several countries, arriving in the United States in 1868. They now have 27 nursing homes across the U.S., where they take care of poor, elderly residents. They have dedicated their lives to following Christ in service to the world.

The Little Sisters were forced to sue the federal government recently to stave off the potentially crushing fines on their ministry that would result from their refusal to arrange for coverage of abortion-inducing drugs, contraceptives, and sterilization in their employee health plans. The Little Sisters argued before the Supreme Court that religious freedom exists not only for houses of worship but also for those who serve others, such as in ministry to the poor, which is part and parcel of the Catholic faith. © 2016, USCCB, Washington, DC

[The Supreme Court unanimously overturned the lower court rulings against the Little Sisters, ordered the government not to fine the Little Sisters, and said the courts should provide an opportunity “to arrive at an approach going forward that accommodates the petitioner’s religious beliefs.” —from thelittlesistersofthepoor.com]

AUGUST 15

Mass will be celebrated at Saint Joseph Church on Monday, August 15 at 7:00 am and 8:30 am. Because the feast

day falls on a Monday in 2016, it is NOT a holy day of obligation. In the United States, whenever the Assumption (August. 15), Mary, Mother of God (January 1) or All Saints (November 1) fall on a Saturday or a Monday, the precept to attend Mass is abrogated.

(If you are interested in attending with the intention of becoming an active part of Saint Joseph’s Bereavement Ministry, the parish will pay your tuition. For class location and registration information, please contact Lauren Egan at 973-497-4327 or at [email protected] Pre-registration is required; class size is limited. NOTE: Participants should not have suffered a recent loss. They should be reliable individuals with good listening skills who are able to commit to a ministry and respect the boundaries of confidentiality.
