STEWARDSHIP

“The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field … He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom.” - Matthew 13:24, 37-38

As children of God, we are all “good seeds,” blessed by God with the potential to accomplish much good in the world. We fulfill God’s plan when we share our talents and our financial gifts to help build God’s kingdom on earth. Through our stewardship we sow “good seeds” on earth to ultimately help each other get to Heaven!

MISSION APPEAL —THIS WEEKEND, JUNE 19-20

This weekend we welcome Father Rozario Meneses, SMM, who will speak to us about the work of our Church in Papua New Guinea and how each one of

us can help to share the Good News of Jesus with the poor and needy there. With our prayers and our financial support we can help the missionary priests, deacons, religious and lay catechists fulfill the Church’s Mission to bring the Gospel to all corners of the earth.

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, JULY 20, 2014

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? Saint Joseph Church welcomes all those who

seek to explore the possibility of becoming a Catholic Christian through the RCIA program (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults).

RCIA is a process designed to educate interested adults in the Catholic faith and prepare them to receive the sacraments of the Church. For more information, contact Father Roy Regaspi at 201-261-0148 and join us any time at Mass.

A MESSAGE FROM FR. ROY

NEWS FROM THE CATHOLIC ADVOCATE Be sure to take a look at the latest edition of The Catholic Advocate Online at http://www.editions.us.com/catholicadvocate_0714

It includes an article on Archbishop Peter Leo Gerety, Archbishop Emeritus of Newark, who recently celebrated 75 years of priesthood. Archbishop Gerety turns 102 years old on July 19. He is the second oldest living bishop in the world and the oldest in the United States.

The issue also includes stories about the 47 laity who became the latest graduates of the Christian Foundation for Ministry Program, the appointment of Bishop da Cunha as eighth bishop of Fall River, Massachusetts, and the Archdiocese’s plans for the Stella Maris Retreat Center in Long Branch, NJ.

THANK YOU FOR HELPING US “PAVE THE WAY”

We have received thirty orders for the commemorative pavers for our Shrine to Saint Francis of Assisi to be located in our Garden of Saints behind the parish office/rectory.

We plan to have the pavers engraved and the small garden shrine ready by the Feast of Saint Francis on October 4 when we will also have the traditional St. Francis Pet Blessing.

We extend our warmest thanks to Armbruster Landscaping who have so generously agreed to donate the time and labor needed to install the shrine along with the additional pavers required to complete the design. To learn more about Armbruster Landscaping, a local, full-service landscaping company, go to www. armbrusterlandscaping.com

The “Symbolon”

In today’s Sunday Gospel, the weeds are being allowed to grow among the wheat. Jesus invites us to embrace the totality of ourselves, our lights and shadows, our moral strengths and our sinful flaws as well. We are asked to nurture and master the ‘wheat’ (good) in ourselves rather than the ‘weeds’ that we may grow in our spiritual journey with Christ.

As we take this life journey, we want to make sure we are going in the right direction. In our walk with God, we want to make sure that we are following what Jesus and his apostles really taught. The way the early Christians did this was by developing a short statement of faith called the Creed, which summed up core Christian beliefs that had been passed on to them. It is the baptismal profession of faith.

This creed served as a sign of unity between believers, connecting them with the beliefs of the early Church. The Christians described their creed as a symbolon. When Christians described their creed as a symbolon, they meant that it was a sign of Christian identity and communion between all believers. When the creed you recited matched up with the Creed of the early Church, you could know with confidence that you were sharing in the same faith proclaimed by Jesus and the Apostles.

On Wednesday, August 6, 2014 the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, we are launching the digital platform of the "Symbolon" that would allow immersion in the faith for all Saint Joseph’s parishioners. It aims at transforming adults on all levels—how they think, how they pray, and how they live—by immersing them in an understanding of the Word of God and the Catholic Faith. Using state-of-the-art technology, Symbolon engages adults in a systematic presentation of the Faith that can be used both in our parish and at home. Registered parishioners can watch the videos from home online anytime, anywhere by signing up to the link I am going to provide in next weekend's bulletin. There will be a secured website that I will provide later on for our private discussions, sharing and reflections as we learn and re-enkindle the vigor of the Scriptures and of our Catholic Faith.

We are also installing a kiosk at the Harrison Street entrance of our church in the next few weeks. We want to offer you the widest variety of authentic Catholic Media through CD’s, books, downloads info, and booklets you can use at home, at your travels or as gifts.

St. Peter exhorts that we “must make every effort to support our faith with goodness, and goodness with knowledge.” (2 Peter 1:5)

MOMENT WITH HOLY MARY Though we may each be called to a different vocation— some to the single life, others to the married, still others to the religious life—

everyone of us is called by God to a life of holiness. Come and explore that special vocation we all share at Moment With Holy Mary.

This prayer group which meets every Friday (except the First Friday of the month) for one hour after the 8:30 am Mass uses prayer, the psalms, and reflections on both the Gospels and our Blessed Mother to help you on your path to holiness.

Please note that due to construction in the lower church, Moment With Holy Mary will take place in the upper church until further notice. For more information, please contact Laura Villena at 201-265-1254.

Word of God. Here at Saint Joseph, we have a way to do just that. It is called the Great Adventure Bible Series. Saint Joseph Parish has enjoyed participating in this nationally known DVD based program since 2008.

New groups are now forming for The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation. We expect to have one daytime group and one evening group. The series will begin in late September.

BULLETIN DEADLINE Any announcement for our parish bulletin must be submitted to Diane Hellriegel at the rectory/parish office or emailed to [email protected] no later than the Monday before the publication date (i.e., Monday, July 21 is the deadline for the July 27 issue). Approved announcements will be included as space permits.

A DIRECT LINE Here is a helpful guide to emergency Scripture numbers for those times of need! Do not be afraid to call on the power of prayer when in need of assistance.

Please note: Emergency numbers may be dialed direct. No operator assistance is necessary. All lines to heaven are open 24 hours a day! Feed your FAITH, and DOUBT will starve to death!

In flower or vegetable gardens weeds may take root beside the good plants. If you spray poison on all the plants, you will get rid of the weeds, but you will also get rid of the good seed, too. Since Jesus has died, weeds have grown among the good seeds. He says not to do away with those who have sinned. He will separate the good seeds from the weeds when he comes again.
