STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.” LUKE 14:33 When we first hear this statement, it seems that Jesus is making an unrealistic demand upon us. How can we renounce all of our possessions? We need them to live. However, what we must renounce is the belief that they belong to us. Everything that we have belongs to God alone. All of our resources are entrusted to us not only for our own use, but also so that we can help others. Once we renounce the idea that we possess or are entitled to anything, it is much easier to share the many gifts that God has given us. Then we are truly His Disciples.

TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ SEPTEMBER 4, 2016

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Since Saint Joseph School and our local public schools open this week, I thought you might be interested in seeing how the children of Jesus’s

time and place were educated. Young children received their first education from their parents. Fathers had the main responsibility, but mothers had a large role too, especially in the upbringing of daughters, one that lasted up to the time of their marriages. Fathers worked very directly with their sons, especially emphasizing their moral guidance, which was passed on with strict discipline when this seemed needed, since, as one of the Biblical proverbs reminded all concerned, “Boyhood’s mind is loaded with a pack of folly that needs the rod of correction to shift it” (Prv 22, 15). Fathers would teach God’s commandments and, in time, see that their young children became familiar with the story and values of Israel by explaining the meaning of their people’s religious festivals and customs. Early on, children would be expected to memorize creedal passages such as Dt 26, 5-10. But receiving a religious education was also seen as a lifetime’s duty. Its importance, and parents’ obligation to foster it, is powerfully expressed in the principal Jewish prayer, the Shema, which was recited daily. Part of it contains this beautiful passage:

Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone! Therefore, you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. Take to heart these words which I enjoin on you today. Drill them into your children. Speak of them at home and abroad, whether you are busy or at rest. Bind them at your wrist as a sign and let them be as a pendant on your forehead. Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates. (Dt 6, 4-9)

Boys of 6-10 were sent to the local synagogue school, an institution that had grown tremendously in the years approaching the time of Jesus. Under the Hazzan, the synagogue’s administrator and keeper of its biblical scrolls, the boys would sit on the ground, often in a special room devoted to school activities, to be taught to read and recite scriptural texts, and to memorize particularly important passages. (Interestingly, in Hebrew the same word means both to repeat and to learn.) Among passages committed to memory were:

∎ Dt 6, 4-5 (part of the Shema) ∎ Dt 11, 13-21 (urging obedience to God’s Law for living prosperously) ∎ Nb 15, 37-41 (describing the meaning of the violet thread in the tassels the devout wore, a reminder of the importance of the Law) ∎ Pss 113-118 (the Hallel, or “praise Psalms”) ∎ Gen 1-5 (the story of creation) ∎ Lev 1-8 (the Jewish religion’s laws of sacrifice).

Classes ran all year long. They met from about 6:00 to 10:00 in the morning, then, after a break during the hottest time of the day, resumed at 3:00. Schools became quite important in Israel. As one saying put it, “It is better that a sanctuary should be destroyed rather than a school.” Boys 10-13 years of age would study at a deeper level, exploring the oral tradition that discussed the meaning of biblical texts and their application to life. After this time of secondary study, most boys would be taught the craft or trade of their fathers. Some might also join nighttime biblical study groups with the local men who pursued this learning. And ones who showed special promise might possibly get a chance to take advanced training in Scripture and tradition by becoming disciples of a distinguished rabbi or scribe. Some students, often ones from wealthier families, might take separate instruction in Greek, which could be very useful in some lines of work—or might even go abroad for higher education based on Greek methods and subjects.

Anyway, good luck to all of our parish’s students as you begin another school year. May God bless the work you will do and the teachers and administrators who will guide you through it. Here is a prayer you might consider saying each school day. It’s called “A Prayer for Students”:

Father of Light and Wisdom, thank you for giving me a mind that can know and a heart that can love. Help me to keep learning every day of my life—no matter what the subject may be. Let me be convinced that all knowledge leads to you and let me know how to find you and love you in all the things you have made.

Encourage me when studies are difficult and when I am tempted to give up. Enlighten me when my brain is slow and help me to gasp the truth held out to me. Grant me the grace to put my knowledge to use in building the kingdom of God on earth so that I may enter the Kingdom of God in heaven.

Activities” and then on “Bible Study 2016-2017.”

ONLINE STUDY AVAILABLE For the first time, we will be offering a Bible Study that can be done on your own at home. This eight-part study provides the easiest way to understand the Bible. Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible makes the complex simple. It helps you uncover the story woven throughout Scripture so that you can get the “big picture” of the Bible and understand what it is all about. (This study will also be offered on campus on Tuesdays at 7:30 pm.) There is minimal 'homework' and each session includes a 30-minute DVD lesson. Everyone can benefit from this study, but parents of school-aged children are particularly encouraged to participate in order to help with their children’s religious education.

TRADITIONAL WEEKLY GROUP SESSIONS Our Newest Study is called Follow Me: Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John (8 weeks). Others studies for this year include Acts of the Apostles (20 weeks), James (10 weeks), and A Biblical Walk through the Mass (5 weeks). All studies meet weekly for 90 minutes on the parish grounds (Parish Life Center or Jackson Room).
