March 5, 2017 ~ The First Sunday of Lent

Anointing of the Sick—Anyone facing surgery or dealing with a serious illness should contact the parish office or Fr. Kevin for the reception of this sacrament. Anointing before surgery can be done prior to or after Mass on the weekends. Please call the parish office to inform us if you are in need of this sacrament.

Reconciliation—Saturday at 4:15pm or by appointment. Communal penance services are also held twice yearly.

Sacrament of Marriage—Please contact Fr. Kevin at least six months in advance to insure ample time for planning, preparation, and scheduling your wedding.

Communion to the Sick and Homebound—If you or someone you know is ill, in the hospital, or homebound, please notify the parish office so a visit can be arranged. Fr. Kevin, one of our deacons, or an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist will be glad to bring Holy Communion.

Rosary Group—Meets on Thursday morning after the 9:00am Mass. Join us in body or spirit as we pray. Call Helen with your intentions: 770-871-6586.

Eucharistic Adoration—First Thursday of each month devotion will commence immediately after the 9:00am Mass and continue until Benediction at 12:00pm. Our Sacristan, Helen Martin can be reached at [email protected] for more information.

Membership—Registration forms may be found at the back of the church or by coming to the church office. Please complete the form and give it to a minister of hospitality or a deacon.

Bulletin Deadline—Announcements and notices for the bulletin must be submitted by 10:00am on Monday for the following

Sunday bulletin. They will run for two weeks. Email them to [email protected]. Announcements received after the deadline will need to be modified to run in the bulletin on subsequent weeks.

Request for Mass Intentions—In our Church tradition no better gift can be given our beloved departed than a Mass offered in their memory on the anniversary of their death, birth, or wedding anniversary. There are forms for scheduling Mass intentions in memory of the departed and special intentions for the living in the pamphlet racks in the administration building.

Stephen Ministry—Are you going through a difficult time? Stephen Ministers are members of the congregation here to help you. We listen, care, encourage and provide spiritual support to people facing a crisis or going through tough times. The care you receive is free, confidential and helpful. Fortunate and Faithful Families will host a Lenten Mass and meeting on Sunday March 26 entitled “Building Bridges of Hope and Love in a World of Uncertainty and Division.” Beginning with 11:00 Mass at The Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 48 MLK, Jr. Drive, Atlanta, the meeting will continue in the fellowship hall. (Note: Free parking is available in the deck diagonally across from the Shrine, bring your ticket to be stamped by the ushers). Msgr. Henry Gracz will present on the topic and there will be time for dialogue and sharing. This gathering is specifically planned for parents and families with LGBT members but is open to all allies and friends of Fortunate and Faithful Families. Please join us for this time of spiritual nourishment and fellowship on your Lenten journey.

Time to think about Catholic Heart Workcamp! We are going to Charleston S. C. this year the week of July 9-15th.

There will be an informational meeting soon. A deposit of $100 is

required to hold your spot, with the balance due in 2 subsequent

payments by May 1. Total cost is approx. $400 per student for the week; lodging and meals included. This is a fantastic trip with service

and fun together with Catholic teens from across the U.S. Chaperones

this year will be: Melissa Parente, Cynthia Welsh, and Deacon Leon

Roberts. We welcome an additional male chaperone and driver. If you

are interested in sending your student to Catholic Heart WorkCamp this summer please contact Clare O’Malley in the Religious Ed office.

Please consider writing Words of Encouragement to State Prisoners The St. Matthew Prison Ministry would like to share our annual outreach project with our parish family.

This project gives you the opportunity to touch the spirits of GA State Prisoners. This is a quick and simple

way to practice mercy.

On March 4, 5, 11, and 12, there will be volunteers at a table set up in the narthex before and after all

Masses to assist you with these notes. Your notes will be delivered to GA State Prisoners by Paul Caruso of the St. Joseph Cafasso Prison Ministry.

Reflexiones para la Homilía

“No robo ni mato, yo no tengo pecados” dicen algunos; pero hay muchas maneras de matar, que no necesariamente producen la muerte física. Sabemos bien cuando nosotros mismos morimos un poco por descuidos y abandonos en el afecto, palabras hirientes, murmuraciones y mentiras; todo eso va atacando poco a poco a la vida, el sentido de autoestima, la dignidad de la persona; y eso es lo que va contra la voluntad de Dios, que hizo a la persona a su imagen y semejanza. Muchas veces lo sufrimos nosotros mismos y otras veces se lo hacemos a los demás, porque cedemos a la tentación. Las tentaciones no siempre son claras; se basan en verdades, como las verdades que les dijo la serpiente a Adán y Eva, y las que le dijo Satanás a Jesús: verán el bien y el mal. Dios, tu Padre te cuidara. Las tentaciones se cuelan a veces en el alma sin que nos demos cuenta y toman forma de justificaciones que nos parecen validas: “estoy cansado; total, una mentira piadosa no le hace daño a nadie; es que se lo tienen merecido: es que me irritan…” A veces la tentación viene disfrazada como algo inofensivo: otros hacen o tienen algo, que nosotros también quisiéramos; porque en este mundo, ser mas y poder mas parece mas importante. Al final, sin embargo, nos damos cuenta de que la tentación nos ha llevado no a la mentira, sino a la muerte. Nos mentimos a nosotros mismos justificándonos; y, al mismo tiempo, minamos nuestra propia integridad y la de los demás; entonces, ese placer o esa vida que nos parecían tan apetecibles, se convierte en tristeza, desilusión y vacío: es decir, en muerte. En las lecturas de hoy se nos presentan tentaciones de diversos tipos, pero también se nos presenta el modelo de Cristo. Al permanecer firme ante la tentación, al afirmar su identidad como Hijo amado de Dios y su misión de salvación Jesús trae vida y no muerte. Quienes ceden a la tentación, porque piensan que lo que van a hacer les hará mas felices, acarrean sobre si mismos y sobre los demás, sombras de tristeza, muerte y desencanto. Con su ejemplo, Cristo nos da la esperanza y el aliento para afirmar también la imagen de Dios en nosotros mismos y en los otros, nuestra propia dignidad y vida y la de los demás.
