  • THE WORD OF OUR LORD

    SAINT OF THE WEEK

    TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — As long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the be er of the fight (Exodus 17:8-13). Psalm — Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth (Psalm 121). Second Reading — Remain faithful to what you have learned and believed (2 Timothy 3:14 — 4:2). Gospel — Will not God secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? (Luke 18:1-8).

    SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday: World Mission Sunday Tuesday: St. John Paul II Wednesday: St. John of Capistrano Thursday: St. Anthony Mary Claret Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary

    PERSISTENCE

Today’s readings are about persistence, passionate persistence. Exodus tells of a ba le won despite weariness because Moses, with help from Aaron and Hur, held his hands raised. Timothy asks that same persistence of his community and us. Luke tells of a court case won by a widow, despite the dishonesty of the judge, because she will not leave him alone. The psalm reminds us that God is everywhere, guarding us from harm day and night, coming and going, now and forever. The readings are about persistence, the relentless, unwavering pursuit of what must not be lost. The readings are about God’s passionate persistence in pursuing us, seeking to win our hearts. ©J. S. Saint Anthony Mary Claret Saint Claret was born in 1807, the fi h of twelve children. Growing up, he did very well in school, but if he was missing from a game with friends, they knew that they could find

him in the church. Even as a young boy, St. Anthony wanted to become a priest, but his father wanted him to follow in the family business of weaving.

With the workers at the shop, St. Anthony would pray the Rosary and o en go to daily Mass with them. At 18 years old, his father allowed him to go to school in Barcelona to learn more advanced ways for weaving and so began his voca on to the priesthood.

At 28 years old, St. Anthony was ordained a priest. He asked to be sent as a missionary to the Canary Islands. He later returned to Spain and converted thousands because of his zeal.

A er he returned to Spain, he took a special interest in the instruc on of children and adults in the faith. He wrote four cateche cal study books that were for different age levels. He greatly desired that all children and adults, even the smallest, understand their faith completely. St. Anthony founded three different religious ins tu ons. He also helped women who were blocked from entering religious life to enter.

In 1849, St. Anthony was named the Archbishop of Cuba. He was able to reform their seminary, and in the me that he was archbishop, over 200 men were ordained. Before that it had been 30 years since an ordina on had taken place.

Queen Isabella II, in 1856, asked St. Anthony to come back to Spain to be her personal confessor. He did not want to live a life in the court, but Pope Pius IX expressly asked him to go, so he obeyed. A er he was exiled from Spain, he went to Rome to par cipate in the Va can Council. While he was there, he had great influence in helping others understand the doctrine of papal infallibility, the main concern of the council at the me.

St. Anthony Mary Claret died October 24, 1870 in exile from Spain in a Cistercian monastery. He is the Patron saint of weavers.piercedhearts.org/theology_heart/life_saints/anthony_claret.html

O God of all the na ons of the earth, remember the mul tudes who have been created

    in your image but have not known the redeeming work of our Savior Jesus Christ;

and grant that, by the prayers and labors of your holy Church, they may be brought to know and

worship you as you have been revealed in your Son; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen

Men's Prison Ministry Update The Pamlico Prison ministry met at the facility on 13 October, we had nine par cipants and five men received the Eucharist. A er recep on we read and discussed readings for the twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary me. The 2nd Kings story of Naaman was of much vibrant and interes ng discussion, as was the Gospel of Luke. One par cipant, David has studied for and received a Bachelors Degree in Ministry from Promise Ministries! He receives Spiritual Communion, and recites and believes the prayer weekly. These men, Catholic, and Protestant come together weekly open-minded, to understand our Catholic belief and prac ce. It is a wonderful thing. We ask you to pray each day for these men, and their families. Our ministry par cipants receive much through this corporal work of Mercy, so please pray for us and them.

The Ministry Fair, which is held every two years, will be held on January 25 and 26th, 2020. Lisa Ludwig is now on board as the new religious educa on coordinator. Kudos were offered for the work done to repair the campus and upgrade where we could as a

at a plan to proceed that is acceptable to everyone. The school is off to a good start with enrollment currently at 157. The “House System” for grades 4

addi onal landscaping, school expansion poten al, parking improvements and u liza on of the rectory.

FOCUS Missionaries, a fellowship of evangeliza on by Catholic students on secular university campuses is run at ECU by Diocesan Father Ian VanHeusen. He will be invited to visit our parish.
