A megachurch is a non-denominational, Bible-centered Christian congregation that draws thousands of people to its weekly services. The phenomenon started about 30 years ago, as a way to bring people back to the basics of Christianity - a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. You may have heard of Rick Warren, pastor of a megachurch in So. California, whose book, The Purpose Driven Life, has over 20 million copies in print. You of course know of Joel Osteen, author of national bestsellers, who runs a megachurch in Houston, Texas, that attracts 38,000 people to its Sunday services and 200 million households to its television broadcasts. These are just some of the better known megachurch leaders, but megachurches are springing up throughout North America, and missions abroad. One little known fact about these megachurches is useful for us to reflect on. Usually, more than 25% of their members are former Catholics. A successful fitness expert in California recently explained why he left the Catholic Church: “No one ever told me that Jesus Christ was offering me his friendship. When I found that friendship elsewhere, how could I refuse it?” The megachurches will come and go, as many other religious movements have done, while the Catholic Church, founded by Christ himself, nourished with the sacraments, guided through the divinely-guaranteed leadership of the papacy, will endure. But that doesn't mean that we are spiritually healthy just because we still come to Mass. We can easily forget that Catholics are called to be Christians, that we need to be living a vibrant, personal friendship with Christ, not just going through the motions of religion. One way to live our faith less passively and more personally has to do with a value, or a virtue, central to the season of Advent. St Paul puts the spotlight on it in the 2 nd Reading from the Letter to the Romans. He writes that, "Whatever was written previously was written for our instruction, that by endurance and by the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope." In other words, the history of God's saving action among men, which we turn our attention to during Advent, should stir up within us an energetic supernatural optimism - what St Paul calls "hope". Hope is the opposite of discouragement and pessimism. Hope is the confidence that no matter how dark it may get in the middle of winter, the light of Christ will never be extinguished. The devil hates hope. He loves discouragement, because it breeds cynicism and despair. He does his best to turn our attention to the shadows and darkness, to the problems and failures. Discouragement is the most paralyzing of vices. If we give in to discouragement, our faith becomes completely passive, completely impersonal. How can we beat the devil, stir up the virtue of hope, and escape from the paralysis of cynicism and discouragement? There is a simple way: stop complaining. Much is wrong in the world, the Church, and our own lives. But complaining fixes nothing and draws our attention to the darkness. To be people of Christian hope, we must learn to turn our complaints into construction projects, to never mention a problem without at the same time proposing a solution. That's how true Christians think and live, because they are personal friends of Christ the Lord, whose power and wisdom are without limit. May God bless you, Fr. Dan P.S. Queridos Feligreses:
Todos conocemos sobre el fenómeno de la "mega-iglesia". Una mega iglesia es una congregación cristiana no confesional centrada en la Biblia que atrae a miles de personas a sus servicios semanales. El fenómeno comenzó hace unos 30 años, como una manera de traer a la gente de vuelta a los fundamentos del cristianismo - una relación personal con Jesucristo. Puede que hayas oído hablar de Rick Warren, pastor de una mega iglesia en So California, cuyo libro, el propósito de manejar tu vida, tiene más de 20 millones de copias impresas. Usted, por supuesto, sabe de Joel Osteen, autor de los mejores libros nacionales vendidos, que dirige una mega iglesia en Houston, Texas, que atrae a 38.000 personas a sus servicios dominicales y 200 millones de hogares a sus emisiones de televisión. Estos son sólo algunos de los líderes de mega iglesias más conocidos, pero las mega iglesias están surgiendo en toda América del Norte, y misiones en el extranjero. Las megas iglesias van y vienen, como muchos otros movimientos religiosos han hecho, mientras que la Iglesia Católica, fundada por Cristo mismo, alimentada con los sacramentos, guiada a través del liderazgo divinamente garantizado del papado, perdurará. Pero eso no significa que estemos espiritualmente sanos sólo porque todavía venimos a misa. Podemos olvidar fácilmente que los católicos están llamados a ser cristianos, que necesitamos vivir una amistad vibrante y personal con Cristo, no sólo pasando por los movimientos de la religión. Una manera de vivir nuestra fe de manera menos pasiva y más personal tiene que ver con un valor, o una virtud, central en la estación de Adviento. San Pablo se enfoca en la 2a lectura de la carta a los romanos. Y escribe que, "Todo lo que fue escrito previamente fue escrito para nuestra instrucción, que por la resistencia y por el aliento de las Escrituras podríamos tener esperanza." En otras palabras, la historia de la acción salvadora de Dios entre los hombres, a la que dirigimos nuestra atención durante el Adviento, debe despertar en nosotros un optimismo sobrenatural enérgico - lo que san Pablo llama "esperanza". La esperanza es lo opuesto al desaliento y al pesimismo. La esperanza es la confianza de que no importa cuán oscuro pueda llegar a ser el invierno, la luz de Cristo nunca se extinguirá. El diablo odia la esperanza. Le encanta el desaliento, porque genera cinismo y desesperación. Hace todo lo posible para dirigir nuestra atención a las sombras y a las tinieblas, a los problemas y fracasos. El desaliento es el más paralizante de los vicios. Si cedemos al desaliento, nuestra fe se vuelve completamente pasiva, completamente impersonal. ¿Cómo podemos vencer al diablo, y despertar la virtud de la esperanza y escapar de la parálisis del cinismo y el desaliento? Hay una manera sencilla: dejar de quejarte. Hay muchas cosas mal en el mundo, en la Iglesia y en nuestras propias vidas. Pero quejarse no arregla nada pero si nos conduce a la oscuridad. Para ser personas de esperanza cristiana, debemos aprender a convertir nuestras quejas en proyectos de construcción, para nunca mencionar un problema sin proponer al mismo tiempo una solución. Así piensan y viven los verdaderos cristianos, porque son amigos personales de Cristo señor, cuyo poder y sabiduría no tienen límite. Dan, on Thursday, December 19, at 11am at St. Jerome, to celebrate his Ordination in Rome to the priesthood, some 50 years ago. Archbishop Fiorenza, and many priests from across the archdiocese have been invited to share in this joyous event. After Mass, there will be a luncheon for visiting clergy, and family members, hosted by Cynthia Gentry, Fr. Dan’s niece. Plans are underway for a “Parish Party”, for all friends and parishioners to celebrate this anniversary with Fr. Dan, and will be announced shortly. ANOINTING OF THE SICK The person need not be at death’s door for the sacrament to be
administered. In fact, the Church recommends very strongly that it be
administered when the person becomes ill, and not wait until death is
approaching.

The theme of the painted panels attempts to capture the Advent anticipation of the Lord’s coming, in graduation of color (dark to light) , simple shapes, and to express this mood of anticipation in a modern art form, to express the soulful longing of the ages in contemporary non-objective art and the belief that modern art can enhance the worship space. These panels were first exhibited in St. Jerome Parish in 1982, one panel per Sunday. Week One, Panel One – into the gloomy unsaved matter (humanity) the inkling of light begins to dawn. The ancient Promise of a Savior begins to materialize! Stay awake! Your Salvation draweth neigh!

sabrán por qué: Con Faith Direct, se puede contribuir a las colectas a
través de una cuenta corriente o con una tarjeta de crédito. Ya no es
necesario ni escribir un cheque ni buscar sobres el domingo por la
mañana. Ahora se puede aprovechar la conveniencia del débito directo
para contribuir a la colecta parroquial de una manera parecida al pago
de la hipoteca y la matrícula de la universidad. Además, Faith Direct
ofrece cartas personalizadas para sustituir el uso de sobres para la

Se invita a los feligreses y amigos a asistir a la Misa del 50 Aniversario para el P. Dan, el jueves 19 de diciembre, a las 11 de la mañana en San Jerónimo, para celebrar su ordenación en Roma al sacerdocio, hace unos 50 años. El arzobispo Fiorenza, y muchos sacerdotes de toda la arquidiócesis han sido invitados a compartir este alegre evento. Después de la misa, habrá un almuerzo para el clero visitante, y miembros de la familia, organizado por Cynthia Gentry, sobrina del Padre Dan. Se están llevando a la fiesta de una "Fiesta Parroquial", para que todos los amigos y feligreses celebren este aniversario con el Padre Dan, y se anunciarán en breve.
