Lincolnshire at War. This is in association with the Lincolnshire Heritage Open Days Steering Group.

Lincolnshire heritage Open Days is part of the national and European Heritage Open Days. Around 50

European countries or states take part annually and the events attract in excess of 20 million visitors.

The Epworth event will concentrate on World Wars One and Two with particular emphasis on social

history aspects of the Isle of Axholme. To make the event successful items of memorabilia, printed

articles, memories etc are required by the organising committee for use during the activity period.

The members of the organising committee will be in St Andrew‘s Church on Tuesday, 31 August,

between 6.00 pm and 8.00 pm to receive any items for display or by prior arrangement with

Penny Birks, Jim Oliver and Melvyn Rose. It is stressed that any item loaned to the church will be

secure at all times and never left unattended during the event. After the event items may be retrieved on

Sunday, 12 September between 4.00 pm and 6.00 pm or Monday, 13 September between

6.00 pm and 7.00 pm or by prior arrangement. The committee is also able to collect and return

items.

If you can spare a little time volunteers are also required to help stage the event in the way of help to

prepare the exhibition or to perform the duties of stewards.

These are the current Neighbourhood Action Team

priorities for the Central Ward of the Isle of Axholme.

Sandtoft Road/Westgate Road, Belton– this is a particularly well used

road within Belton to both residential and business locations. There are

reports of vehicles who travel along this road when they are not permitted

to do so because of the weight restriction in place and those that break the

speed limit. Together with out partners we are addressing the issue and

an increase in roads policing officers in the area has been requested. The

Road Safety Partnership together with the council are working together to

tackle the problem.

Thurlow, Station Road, Epworth – Lighter nights, the end of exams

and the beginning of the holidays for some youngsters have seen an increase in calls for passing

attention at the Thurlow . Youths in cars are causing annoyance to residents around this area, by

revving their engines, playing loud music and general annoyance. The park area is suffering

particularly at a weekend with youths discarding empty bottles and litter which pose a danger to youngsters using the

facilities. Police are patrolling the area and encourage locals to get in touch if they are affected, particularly with

registrations numbers of the vehicles responsible and/or descriptions of offenders.

Belton Playing Fields/Pavilion - we are receiving numerous calls regarding anti-social behaviour around the pavilion

and park area. Particularly now schools and colleges have broken up such locations seem a natural meeting place for

teenagers to gather. Residents affected are encouraged to call in again with descriptions of offenders and any vehicles

involved.

Please be aware that Police Community Officers are now empowered to issue £80 Fixed Penalty notices for the

following offences; - Graffiti, Fly-posting, dog fouling and litter.

Now that the pupils have left school for their summer break there are some who have time on their hands and

sometimes become involved in Anti-social behaviour. Please do not encourage this type of behaviour by the minority

and if matters persist please contact the police.

The lighter evenings and warmish weather are still with us and the team would like to remind occupants to keep

checking the security of their homes and also ensure they will withstand the bad weather which will return. Those who

still have a break planned please pay particular attention to the security whilst

PC‘s Sally Jameson, and Tina Starbuck will be attending the next Neighbourhood Action Team meeting for the Central

ward of the Isle, on Tuesday 14th September 2010 at, The Imperial Hall, Epworth at 7pm. The Chair Clr Liz Redfern

invites members of the public to attend the hall at 6-45pm for the public to have an informal chat with the

Neighbourhood Action Team prior to the official meeting which the public cannot remain at. If you are unable to

attend please contact your parish councillor or the team to discuss any issues.

You can contact Humberside Police on 0845 60 60 222 for non-emergency calls. You can also contact Crimestoppers

on 0800 555 111. When contacting Crimestoppers you do not have to give your name and you may be eligible for a

cash reward for information you give.

PC 1169 Jameson is responsible for the Neighbourhood Action team issues for the Central Ward of the Isle of

Axholme, and will be working with Pc Starbuck and PCSO 7577 Pearson. Staff conduct regular patrols the Central area

of the Isle and will be happy to discuss any community issues with you. Please feel free to stop and speak with him or

alternatively contact us via the above telephone number. PC Jameson and PCSO Pearson will be holding a surgery on

Friday 20th August 2010, at the Community Room, School Close, Epworth at 1400 hours (2pm). Members of the public

are invited to visit this surgery to meet and discuss with the officers any issues relevant to the central ward.

PC 1839 Starbuck attends and is actively involved in the Farmwatch scheme covering the south and central wards of the

Isle of Axholme. The scheme was set up with the involvement of local farmers from these wards. This was at the

request of a number of farmers to allow us to meet and discuss issues affecting their farms. The meetings were a great

success; however the last couple of meetings have had a poor turnout. Those farmers who have made the time for a

couple of hours still find it a benefit and PC Starbuck would encourage any farmer who either did attend or who wishes

to attend in the future to make a note of the next meeting in their diary – WEDNESDAY 3rd NOVEMBER 2010 at 8pm

at the RED LION HOTEL, EPWORTH. The meeting only lasts at the most a couple of hours. If you require any

further details please contact PC Starbuck. PC Starbuck reports that there are reports of theft of diesel and

equipment from farms within these wards and would ask that any information regarding these crimes be passed to the

police or Crimestoppers immediately.

The police station at Epworth also provides a front counter service for two days a week, Monday and Thursday,

between 9am and 3pm. This can be subject to change at short notice, but if this happens a notice will be on the front

door at Epworth.

What is Pets Home

and Away?

We are a young and exciting local family business

committed to providing the best possible services

for the pets in our care; for your pet. Owned and

run by Barry Davenport, a former Doncaster

teacher, the family has cared for cats and dogs as

pets for many years. As a family of full time

workers, (Liz, Barry‘s wife, is still a part time

teacher) it was important for us to find reliable

people to check on our pets during the day. We

were lucky with friends and family for the most part

but going on holiday could be a real problem. We used the usual services out there, but the dogs

often returned with kennel cough and a general

grumpiness at being left. The cats refused to speak

to us for days after their return! So we understand

how important it is for you to know that there is a

service to care for, exercise and look after your pet

in a safe, loving environment, whenever you need it.

In short, a pet home from home. So we set about looking for people who would care

for our animals in their homes. It worked! Our dogs

loved going to their host‘s house for their holiday

and the cats were happy to see the regular visitor

who came into our own home to care for them.

We went on holiday happy in the knowledge that

on our return our pets would be happy and in tip-

top condition. And if it worked for us why not for

YOU? Pets Home and Away was born.

So if you‘re out of town for work or holiday,

recovering from illness or having a special weekend

away such as a family wedding, we have a service to

suit you.

You can choose to send your canine companion

into a host‘s secure and vetted home or have all

your pets cared for in their own familiar

surroundings thus maintaining all home routines and

home security. Pet and house sitters are CRB

checked.

We are members of The National Association of

Registered Petsitters with access to a fully qualified

veterinary nurse 24 hours a day. For our

customers‘ peace of mind, we are fully insured.

For details of all our services call 01302 840688 or

August 2010

News Letter...

Ofsted take School out of a Cate-

gory

‘School no longer requires significant

improvement and is now a satisfac-

tory and improving school.

We are delighted with these words at

the start of our Ofsted report from the Inspection of a few weeks ago.

Ofsted have recognised the significant changes made this year in school to bring about the

improvements needed. We have been very pleased with the results of all the assessments

made this year. Children in every year group and ability group, including those who need

more support as well as the more able, have made improved progress this year – or

‗accelerated progress‘ as the Inspectors put it.

We are also very pleased with the positive role played by the children. The Inspectors

rated the pupil‘s contribution to the school and wider community as good.

It has been a team effort from all staff in school. My thanks go to all staff for their hard

work in a very challenging year – as Ofsted state ‗staff have knuckled down and success-

fully improved provision and outcomes for pupils.‘

We are not complacent. We know lots of the changes introduced this year will take time

to embed and impact but we know we are travelling in the right direction – Ofsted has

endorsed the clear vision for the school of the senior leaders and staff and we are

‗improving‘ as the report states in several areas.

There is lots of potential to go a lot further and I would like to assure parents that I will

continue to do all I can in working with staff, governors and parents to ensure the school

continues to improve and is recognised as the good school that Epworth deserves.

Building Work starts for Stepping Stones to move onto the school site

The Stepping Stones, pre-school, will be moving onto the school site next term.

The building alterations have just begun in the spare classroom next to the Reception

classes. It is planned that they will be completed by the end of the Summer term so Step-

ping Stones can move into our building ready for the Autumn term.

As part of this work there will be a new outdoor play area to be shared by both Stepping

Stones and School with the infant playground extended to make up the area lost. The out-

door work will be completed over a longer time span in the Autumn.

We are looking forward to welcoming Stepping Stones onto our site and to improved

facilities for both school and the pre-school.

Future of Collinson Cooper Hall in Belton

A meeting was held on July 21st to discuss the future of the Collinson Cooper Hall

in Belton which has been standing unused for approximately 8 years. The felt roof was replaced by tiles more than 20 years ago, which over time caused structural damage. Up to 8 years ago the Hall was actively used by many groups but had to be closed because the building became unsafe.

A recent survey was carried out to examine in detail the structural state of the building and to estimate the cost of repairs. At the meeting, various options for

the Hall were discussed and a clear majority were in favour of repairing the building rather than demolishing it.

The outcome from the meeting was taken to the Parochial Church Council who agreed to initiate a feasibility study in order to establish the way forward,

including funding, future management and future use.

The PCC would be pleased to hear from anybody who would offer their skills, time or funding to help with the repair and refurbishment.

We have already received some enquiries about use of the Hall, but would also like to hear from any other groups who may be interested in using it in the future.

Please contact John or Janice 01427 872789.

The Isle of Axholme Where You Live Your Local History

Adapted by Anthony Catherall

The Drainage of the Isle (continued)

In 1636 the commoners of Epworth protested to the local commissioners about their allocation of only 6,000 acres. The disputes were referred to the Attorney General John Banks, who allocated a further1, 000 acres. This far from satisfied the commoners who claimed all 13,000 acres under John de Mowbray’s Deed. Violence broke out again. William Torksey, Hezekiah Brown, John Moody and Henry Scott were arrested and find £1000,00 by the Court of Star Chamber in London. After this, peace reigned in the Isle until 1642 with the outbreak of Civil War. The Islonians sided with parliament and again tried to eject the Participants. Violence broke out and floodgates, sluices and banks were broken down. Soon there was complete chaos. The Sheriff of Lincoln arrived with 100 men to protect the Participants. Daniel Noddell raised 400 men. Defeated the Sheriff and drove him out. With the King gone and Parliament ruling, the Islonians might have expected a return to the land, but in 1650 when the case was again raised in London, Parliament sided with the Participants. The Islonians obtained the support of John Wildman and John Lilbourne (Freeborn John), two leaders of the Levellers, an extreme revolutionary group with strong socialist views. They encouraged the riotous Islonians to impound the enemies’ cattle and demand extortionate fees for redemption. Major-General Edward Whalley arrived to put down the riots. This was only temporary. Nathaniel Reading, an agent of the Participants, now became the object of the commoners’ fury. He was paid £200,00 a year plus costs. There were thirty-one set battles between Reading and the commoners. The Participants were unable to pay Reading and so as compensation, they gave him the lease of Epworth Manor right in the middle of his enemies. In 1694 and 1697 his property was attacked and burnt by a mob led by Katherine Popplewell. The Riot Act of 1715 and the presence of soldiers of Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Reading eventually brought peace to the Area. Thus ended almost 100 years of turmoil and violence. Legal processes were also used by the commoners to seek justice. The Vavasour family and Robert Popplewell acted for the commoners in court. Besides the legal action mentioned, in 1691 the case raised again in London and the 1636 decision was set aside and a more favourable offer made to the commoners. However in 1719 the commoner’s case was finally dismissed before the court of Chancery.

Now & Then – Then & Now

No 17 By Anthony Catherall

This month and every month; see Epworth in bygone days and compare to today‘s images!

A card from the 1800‘s of The Old Wesley Chapel in Chapel Street Epworth, having been built in 1821 costing around

£900.00 on the site of a previous Chapel. Well-known Epworth Grocer William Belton Buttrick, a custodian of the

Members Book for the Temperance Society where members signed the pledge of abstinence, was also a

Superintendent of the Chapel for over 30 years. Some documents state that the Chapel seated over 800 people.

To the right is Pashley Walk, with a building next door that in earlier times was thought to be a butchers shop.

Bill and Bert Pashley of Low Burnham told Epworth resident Cliff Gravel that the walk was built by their forefathers

to enable people from the west side of Epworth a short cut to the Chapel and shops. To its right we see the old

Wesleyan Sunday School and the gable end of Carlton House still there today.

Below the picture taken from the car park taken on 9 May 2010, in place of the Chapel, Newborn Court and Parkin

butchers shop.

Recently a colleague tried to send me an e mail. But

we know how sensitive e- mail systems are, and that if one digit or letter or

space is incorrect it is not sent. So it was in this case for the colleague

printed my name as Lees, missing off the final ‗E‘ of what should have been

Leese. I have had this name for 60 years and well know how it should be

spelt. Similarly I tried to contact a visiting preacher in Wetherby and

missed out the middle initial ‗L‘, (in too much of a hurry) and instead mis-

takenly sent an email to someone in Texas, who strongly told me he was not

the person I wanted as he was an American Catholic! It is important we get

our addresses correct.

So in personal communications, a Susan does not always like

being called Sue, nor a David Dave, nor an Edward a Teddy, and so the list

goes on.

Our names and addresses are very important, they are a part of our identity. Epworth for

example may have a Doncaster postcode, but it is still emphatically in Lincolnshire.!

As Christian people we assert that we are not only made by God, loved by God, known by

God, but known by name by God-personally and lovingly. We call our first name our Christian name, and

it is the name we answer too with one another and also to God..

As one brought up in the 1950‘s I was brought up to give people their handle, and by that my

parents meant the proper title, a Mr or Mrs, or Dr (we didn‘t know any Lords). In our society today we

are more informal and we are called by Christian names. I believe it will be so in heaven, for Jesus knew

his followers by name, so lets practice here on earth.

David.

The Maker’s Instructions

I bought a new mobile telephone this week. Spurred on by Tesco‘s doubling my Clubcard

points, I went with family advisers to see what to get. Home I came, carrying my brand

new touchscreen mobile with pride.

I left the package unopened in the lounge deliberately. I knew my teenage son would soon

come to sort me out. He got the mobile working, showed my wife what to do – I was

napping – and left us to it. Could we fathom it out? We couldn‘t even unlock it. So we did

what we always do with every new appliance – asked for an explanation not just a demon-

stration. The Maker‘s instructions remain unread.

Jesus Christ left us our Maker‘s Instructions which we call The Bible. Sadly, we often leave

it unread. In order to work out everything my mobile will do, I will have to read the

Maker‘s Instructions thoroughly, several times, whilst trying to make the functions work. I

apply the same rules to my life. I read the Maker‘s Instructions, and try to follow them.

Sunday by Sunday in our Churches and Chapels, we read the Maker‘s Instructions to-

gether and try to work out how they impinge on our lives. You are welcome to join us

any time!

Rev Timothy Buckley Rector of The Belton Group of Churches.

Smartest, Baa None!

What’s in a name?

Jane Keightley thought of in excess of 300 potential

names including Truly Scrumptious, Nautical Nippers

and Planet Wow! before finally deciding on

Smartest, Baa None! One evening whilst reading

the Daily Mail the headline Biggest, Baa None caught

Jane‘s attention. It was a fascinating article about an

extremely large lamb and it gave Jane the inspiration for the shop‘s name.

Smartest, Baa None! was then professionally produced into a unique and

distinctive logo which formed the platform for the shop signage and a

complementary interior design, to ensure the clothes could be displayed at their

best.

From the outset Jane was determined to offer a fabulous range of clothes and accessories by leading

designers and was therefore delighted to secure famous best selling brands such as Catimini, Joules, no

added sugar, Timberland and Bébé. To ensure Smartest, Baa None! appeals to as many customers as

possible, Jane has gone to great lengths to select a wide range of clothes at varying prices which means

more people have the opportunity to purchase designer garments and accessories at affordable prices.

Word-of-mouth marketing is the lifeblood of any business which is why the staff at Smartest, Baa

None! aim to create an enjoyable shopping experience in the hope that customers enjoy their visit, tell

others and return again.

Jane attends events every weekend to create awareness of Smartest, Baa None! and invites companies

such as The Story Station to the shop to entertain the children, giving Mums a chance to browse at their

leisure.

If you would like Smartest, Baa None! to come to you or you‘re an author/entertainer who

would like to host a creative session at the shop, please call Jane on 01427 875975

Belton Toddler Group was taken

over by us in February Having been in

the situation ourselves of being newcomers to the

area, we recognised the need for somewhere that

enables parents and children to get to know others in

a friendly, welcoming environment.

The group gets together from 9.15am – 11.15am

every Wednesday during term-time at Belton Public

Hall. It is a drop-in session where the parents can have

a cup of tea and a chat while the children play. Activi-

ties include playdough and colouring. There is also a

range of small and large educational toys for the chil-

dren to play with.

We also provide a healthy snack when all the children

are encouraged to sit together. The session is finished

off with the children joining in with nursery rhymes.

All children are welcome from birth onwards and we

charge £2 per family.

We look forward to seeing everyone including any

newcomers when we restart on 8th September.

Sponsorship Scheme Launched at Wesleyana Day

A sponsorship scheme to conserve one of the treasured and ancient books in Epworth‘s Old Rectory Museum

was launched on Saturday (July 24) when the Grade 1 listed building played host to a Wesleyana Day.

The multi-faceted event was held primarily to raise money for the Old Rectory‘s development fund – a project to

open up the entire house to visitors and provide a visitors‘ centre to house a café, museum shop and other

facilities including improved parking.

The sponsorship scheme was launched to preserve a book entitled Contemplations Upon The History of the New

Testament. It was published in 1661 and is part of the museum‘s collection as it contains the signatures of several

of the Wesley family.

―It is in serious need of conservation, so we are inviting people to donate £1 to dedicate the restoration of a single

page to someone special to them,‖ said the Old Rectory‘s curator, Rev Claire Potter.

Prior to Saturday‘s event the Old Rectory had launched an appeal for old books and their sale alone raised £350.

In addition, as Saturday was Epworth Old Gardens weekend, there were plants on sale. Some were grown at the

Old Rectory itself and others had been donated by volunteers and in all £500 was raised on the day.

Another facet to the day was a sort of ‗Antiques Roadshow‘ for items relating to the Old Rectory itself, the

Wesley family and Methodism in the Epworth area.

A team of experts was on hand to advise people about their memorabilia, although valuations could not be given.

Some 40 objects were brought to the experts and they ranged from an old family Bible, statues, ceramics, prints,

paintings and books – some of which had been given as Sunday school prizes.

Among the more unusual items brought along were a brass doorknocker in the form of John Wesley, an oil

painting of him framed in velvet and a Bible dating from 1805 with all sorts of documents tucked inside it.

Each object was logged, photographed and then the item‘s owner was given time with the relevant expert to

discuss it. Several items were subsequently donated to the Old Rectory Museum, internationally famous as the

birthplace of John and Charles Wesley – founders of the Methodist movement.

About 150 people attended the

day-long event - including Isle

MP Andrew Percy, who was

given a tour of the Old Rectory

and took great interest in the

book sponsorship scheme.

Anyone interested in sponsoring

the restoration of a page of the

1661 book can do so by going

along the museum during

opening hours, which are

Monday to Saturday from

10.00am until 4.30pm and

Sunday from 2.00pm until

4.30pm.

Anyone who sponsors the

restoration of a page will be able

to write a dedication and these

will be bound in a book to be

kept in the Old Rectory‘s library

in perpetuity.

News from Belton All Saints CE Primary

Trips and Visitors

This Summer we have been very busy with pupils having trips out of school and visitors coming to support

and develop our curriculum. Here are some pupil reports about a few of the events.

Year 1 & 2 had a Medieval Day – complete with a knight in

shining armour! To complete their ‗Castles‘ topic pupils

dressed up for the day and were visited by re-enactment

enthusiast (and parent) Scott Howsham .

“We had a great time, when Conner’s dad came in I was amazed.”

Mac Smith

―I learnt lots of things about knights and castles.‖ Pheobe Craighill

―I learnt about the weapons which were used.‖ Lewis Sutton

―I learnt what all the armour was called, I found it exciting‖

Lucas Johnson

Years 3 & 4 went to Gainsborough Old Hall.

We went because our topic was about the Tudors. The floor was

very uneven and it was freezing because they had no central

heating! We dressed up as Tudors and had a pretend banquet!

King Henry V111 actually visited long ago, he slept in a blue and

red bed which we saw. He had a four poster bed with a roof and

curtains because he wanted to stay warm They had huge feasts with

guests and entertainment like jesters, dancers, jugglers and

gymnastics.

We really enjoyed our visit! By Emily Frith and Caitlin Grundy.

Residential Visit to Gibraltar Point Nature Reserve Year 5 went to Gibraltar Point, it was a very long journey on the bus. When we got there we were all very excited

and happy. On the first day we had a scavenger hunt on the beach, most people found all the items on the sheet

except the starfish (there were loads of crabs, but they were all dead!). On the second day we went pond dipping,

we found lots of interesting creatures including sticklebacks and damselfly larvae. Luckily nobody fell in!

On the third day we went bird watching and we saw jackdaws, pigeons and turtle doves. We saw a family of

avocets on their nest, there were seven babies.

Everyone had a brilliant time but we were missing our families and friends. When we got home we needed lots of

sleep.

Lois McKnight and Alex Harvey

In June year 6 went to Whitby. While we were there we visited many tourist attractions such as: the Abbey, St

Mary’s church, Pannet Park and the Captain Cook Museum.

At Whitby we learnt to work together and encourage each other in the various activities throughout our trip. We

stayed at a lovely hotel called Sneaton Castle. While we were there we went to Pannet Park Museum it was very

intriguing, inside there was a collection of fossils, stuffed animals, wooden ships and a variety of Whitby jet items,

also a collection of children’s toys.

One night we went down to the beach we played rounder’s, football and explored the rock pools; there was loads

of jelly fish on the beach.

On the last evening we held a talent show, there was singing, dancing, a magician and music. We all had a great

time and were sorry when it was time to come home.

Ben Hellewell and Jeff Temporal

Art in the Garden at Wroot The Art in the Garden event which is part of the North Lincs Insight Open Studios event and takes place

over two weekends; September 18 & 19, 25 & 26 from 10.00am to 4.00pm at Fieldhouse Farm, Field

Lane, Wroot, DN9 2BL

Five local artists ( Sue Dare, Sarah Dare and John Philips

from Wroot, Pam Arrand from Belton and Sue

Hartlebury from Eastoft) will be exhibiting and will be on

hand to answer questions and chat about their work which

includes sculpture in wood, metal, wire and ceramics,

paintings on silk, paintings in oil, water based oil, acrylics, and

fused glass jewellery.

There will also be the opportunity ( for a small charge) to

have a go at silk painting, making a wire bird, and making a

fused glass pendant.

The garden is worth a visit in its own right and was open

under the NGS last year. Refreshments will be available and

visitors are welcome to wander around or sit and relax and

enjoy a cup of tea and home made scone.

Everyone is welcome and entry is free and proceeds from

refreshments will go to Lindsey Lodge.

Guest speaker at the July meeting of Haxey and Westwoodside

Heritage Society was Angus Townley of Crowle on the subject of ‘The

Complete Drainage of the Isle of Axholme. Many people associate the drainage of the Isle with Vermuyden and the Dutch in the times of Charles 1.

In actual fact the first people to start draining the Isle were the Romans. The area started some 11-15,000

years ago as a glacial lake known as Lake Humber. Glacial melt left deposits of clays and sands, since then

forests have turned to peat.

Stone and flint axe heads from the Neolithic age have been found at Crowle and bronze age metal

artefacts at Low Burnham. Traces of a Romano-British settlement were found at Sandtoft when

excavating for the M180 motorway. At one time Bawtry was classed as a port. In the 14th century some

12,000 cattle were grazed in Epworth and Westwoodside and fishing rights in Crowle were valued at

£300 per year in 1650.

James I was the first to ask Vermuyden to drain the land but he died before work commenced, and the

final agreement was drawn up by his son Charles 1. It was this agreement that caused all the trouble as it

split the land three-ways between the King, the Dutch ‗participants‘ and the local population. The work

around Haxey and Epworth carried out during 1628-1631.

In 1764 John Smeaton, who built the Eddystpone Lighthouse, did some drainage work and the Stainforth

and Keadby Canal opened in 1800. Pumping Stations were built during the 19th and 20th centuries. The

position of the dykes and rivers has been changed many times over the centuries. Mr Townley illustrated

his talk with photos of old maps of the area.

Sylvia Hook giving thanks for a very interesting talk said she could still remember the old names of the

dykes from her childhood.

Earlier members had been told of the progress being made with research on the names listed on the

Haxey War Memorial. It is hoped to complete the project in time for the next Armistice Day in

November. The personal histories are to be placed in leather bound books to be displayed in Haxey

Church and the two chapels in the Parish. Copies will also be donated to the two schools.

The next meeting is Thursday September 9th at 7.30pm in Westwoodside village Hall, when Carol Hill will

be making a very welcome return visit to the Society.

Beyond The Standard Driving Test Dear readers, The government has made the standard Driving Test more difficult in recent years, with the addition of a multiple-choice test and a computerised hazard-awareness assessment.

However it still only involves learning the most fundamental driving skills and doesn‘t include preparation for poor-weather or motorway driving. The standard L-test is simply an introduction to driving a vehicle. Your further education takes place on today‘s congested roads and provides a steep and often precarious learning curve, this is where Driver education comes in.

On the U/K‘s congested roads it‘s important that you‘re always in the right frame of mind to drive. A positive attitude will help to reduce the risk of collisions through tolerance and courtesy, by being realistic as to your own abilities, and by maintaining a high degree of care for your own safety and others.

Driving on UK roads can be very stressful, but you must always remain cool-headed tolerant and courteous–helping to avoid or diffuse any threatening situations. Don‘t let your driving standards be affected by other motorist‘s mistakes or behaviour.

Stay relaxed, don‘t be provoked and remember that, if you do make a mistake an apologetic wave is often all it takes to put things right. Don‘t let your enthusiasm for driving tempt you into breaking the speed limit or driving dangerously always know what

speed you are doing and know what the maximum speed limit is. Remember timid drivers can be as dangerous as aggressive drivers. Always expect the worst from other motorists and try to understand what they are aiming to achieve. If you allow for poor

observation and slow reactions, you‘ll find you‘re always prepared for the worst-case scenario. Whether you‘re a novice motorist or an experienced driver, you‘ll always find room to improve your driving skills. Keep an open mind, be realistic about your limitations and always be prepared to learn from any errors you make. When following other drivers, always apply the two-second rule if you suspect they may not be totally focused on their

driving, leave an even bigger gap to give you extra braking time. Tailgating is a common cause of collisions, it is dangerous and antisocial and can never be condoned. 1.The Driving Position.

One of the most important aspects of driving a modern machine involves achieving the perfect driving position every time

you get behind the wheel. This allows you maximum control over your vehicle and will keep you more comfortable and

alert on longer journey‘s It‘s also the position most often adopted by racing drivers, especially rally and touring car drivers.

Sit in the car with the base of your spine in the back of the seat to prevent back problems.

Hold the wheel at ten-to-two or quarter-to-three. Keep your thumbs vertical.

Whenever possible adjust the steering wheel rake for improved control and to enable you to see all the dashboard

instruments.

Make sure your arms are slightly bent.

Your legs should be slightly bent too when your feet are on

the pedals.

The back of the seat should be fairly upright giving you a

good view of the road ahead, mirrors, display and dials.

Ensure that head restraints are adjusted so that they align

with the top of you head.
