Arts KC to Awe Our August LuncheonArtsKC President + CEO, Harlan Brownlee and Chairman of the Board, Becky Blades entertained and informed our luncheon crowd about the Cultural Regional Plan and gave some artist/writer insight and entertainment as a fellow Kansas Citian through the eyes of an artist. To accompany the presentation, two local artists, Israel Garcia and Eugenia Ortiz, provided a special exhibition of their work for both viewing and purchasing enjoyment. To help ArtsKC continue to gain support for their efforts, please participate in their survey at http://oneartskc.mindmixer.com/

Legislative Affairs Committee to Hear RequestsBusinesses, civic organizations, public officials, individuals and other community members seeking Chamber support for local, state and/or federal legislative issues are invited to attend this roundtable discussion. These roundtables are not testimony-based as in past years, but a discussion to reflect priority topics.

Wednesday, September 3 at 1:00PM Business Members: please be in attendance to discuss your legislative goals and needs.

Monday, September 8 at 1:00PM City & County Members: please be in attendance to discuss your legislative goals and needs for your communities.

After the two scheduled meetings, the Legislative Affairs Committee will be sending out a survey to the entire membership to share their opinion on the presented topics. The Committee will then review, and with the approval from the Board of Directors, will determine which issues to include in our 2015 Legislative Priorities. Issues included will be based on the impact to the Northland’s business climate and quality of life. We appreciate your participation in our legislative efforts. Please contact the NRCC office, 816.455.9911 or [email protected], to RSVP.

NRCC Board Member, Valerie McCaw, Enjoys some KC BBQ with the President of the United States

from one of our own.....Looking at the menu and ordering dinner was the normal part. President Obama’s chose ribs with water as his beverage choice. And to McCaw’s surprise, all the conversation and overall time felt, surprisingly, not intimidating. She dined with three other Kansas City Area residents, all whom shared their letters that they had personally wrote on their own time to President Obama, who in fact looks just like he does on TV. From these letters that President Obama read and remembered, he was able to have a personal discussion about domestic issues that they faced suched as student loan debt, general and alternate education options for high school students, community service opportunities and even STEM importance. President Obama was very personable with both his dinner guests, and others in the restaurant including a local high school girls softball team, and even shared some french fries off of his plate for McCaw to enjoy! If you could ask any question to the President of the United States, what would yours be? McCaw asked how he handled the pressure. President Obama’s answers could help many of us, as he said he did the following: • Took the long view on things • Dinner hour every night with his family to help give him perspective • Worked out every day • Faith to carry him through the tough times • Kept his temperament with basically an optimistic viewpointPresident Obama shared with McCaw that he genuinely liked being the President, a lot, and that he also really enjoyed having daughters and that they were very special to him. He gave McCaw’s son Kevin the advice to “Keep your grades up.”- something we all should encourage the youth to do! McCaw ended her dinner and visit with the President of the United States with a warm hug, a purchase of a lottery ticket, and positive memories including the fact that our President of the United States never complained about congress, nor about the media.

“It was interesting to see a security dog go thru a BBQ place and not eat the food. (Though the handler said, “anything on the floor is fair game.”), said McCaw sharing her exciting dinner with President Barack Obama. The evening of Tuesday, July 29 was like any other for most of us Northlanders, as we all prepared for the task of figuring out “what’s for dinner”. For McCaw, the ‘what’ was an easy choice of most Kansas Citians popular choice of BBQ, but with whom was the exciting factor. It’s not every day that a mother, business owner, or let alone, a citizen of the United States gets to prepare to eat dinner with the President. We are very fortunate to get to get some insight
