Shrine Herald April 15, 2007 Divine Mercy Sunday Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Easter 2007 With the Second Sunday of Easter, Di- vine Mercy Sunday, April 15, the Octave of Easter concludes. We now begin the Easter Season that will continue until Pen- tecost Sunday on May 27. The Easter Sea- son is a wonderful time for the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism and the celebration of First Communion. This year the celebration of First Com- munion at the National Shrine of the Little Flower will take place at two special masses, one at 2:00 pm, Sunday, April 29. The second celebration will be at 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 5. Although these are special Masses for those making their First Communion and their families, anyone in the parish is welcome to attend. The 50 days from Easter to Pentecost are celebrated as one joyful feast. This feast is not an obligation to party until you drop for 50 days in mindless festivities. Rather it is an invitation to plumb the depths of this great Paschal Mystery we celebrate and to reflect on the meaning of it in our lives. continued on page 3 High School Academy Gym Now that we have the necessary per- mission of the Archdiocese of Detroit to begin the next phase of the Master Plan, specifically, the new gym building at the High School and Academy, we can begin to negotiate contracts and move for- ward. Contracts will need to be signed, permits will have to be obtained, planning and all the reviews that go along with planning will have to take place. The work is already under way. Do not be disappointed if you do not see something physically happening immediately. A lot has to take place before we can actually put a shovel in the ground. Don’t lose hope, it will happen. Church Connector What do we call the connector? Hundreds of suggestions have come in. The Master Plan Steering Committee will sift through them at their meeting Saturday, April 21. The Parish Council will hopefully make the designation at their next meet- ing, Monday April 23. Then we will know what to call it. Mass Intentions Anniversary Mass Next Sunday, April 21, we celebrate our annual Anniversary Mass and blessing for all the married couples of the National Shrine of the Little Flower, especially those celebrating jubilee years. In this day and age when marriage and family are un-der attack in so many ways, it is important for us to express the importance of both marriage and family in God’s plan. I look forward to seeing all the couples celebrating jubilees this year whether it be 5 years, 50 years or more, and everything in between. In a very real way, our parish is as strong as the domestic communities of faith, the household churches, the families and married couples that make it up. A healthy marriage, a strong family, and faithfilled households make for a strong parish community. Rosie, Russia, and Carlito The courtyard between the church, rectory, and the new addition has finally gotten to a state that Rosie can go out into it. Last week, however, she was able to sneak through the new building and go around the block to Roseland and wander around the neighborhood looking for friends. Thank-fully the friendly mail man spotted her and brought her home where she belongs. Precautions have been taken to make sure it does not happen again.

Anniversary Mass Sunday, April 22 – 10:45 am Mass The Anniversary Mass and reception is scheduled for those couples celebrating a special wedding anniversary. Are you celebrating 25, 50 or ANY other 5-year an-niversary? If you did not receive an invitation

from the parish to attend the 10:45 mass and reception on April 22, we may not know your anniversary date. If that is the case, please call the National Shrine office at 248.541.4122 and let the parish know so that you too will be included in the annual celebration. It is important to get an accurate count of couples so please respond in a timely manner.

Growing in Faith as a Family . . . Elementary . . . Divine Mercy Sunday: “I am alive forever.” Acts 5:12-16, Rev 1:9-11a, 12-13, 17-19, & Jn 20:19-31 At the canonization of St. Maria Faustina Kowal-

ska on April 20, 2000 Pope John Paul II declared the Second Sunday of Easter to be Divine Mercy Sunday. Jesus appeared to Sr. Maria Faustina in 1931, speaking of His desire for the faithful to celebrate a special feast dedicated to His Divine Mercy. In her diary Sr. Faustina wrote of her vi-sions, saying Jesus appeared to her with two rays emanating from Him, one red and the other of pale color. The Lord asked that a painting be created of this image as a reminder to the faithful. When Sr. Faustina asked Jesus of the meaning of the rays, He replied: “The two rays de-note Blood and Water. The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls. These two rays issued forth from the depths of My tender mercy when My agonized Heart was opened by a lance on the Cross ‘Happy is the one who will dwell in their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay hold of him (Diary, 299).’ By means of this image I shall grant many graces to souls. It is to be a reminder of the demands of My mercy, be-cause even the strongest faith is of no avail without works (Diary, 742).” The reading from the Acts of the Apostles tells of the great works of mercy done by the faithful under the leadership of the Apostles. These acts of love are to be carried out by all who call themselves Christians, for it is through the love and mercy we show each other that those in need will recognize the Presence of Christ active in their lives. Jesus gives us the greatest example of love and mercy through His Paschal Mystery. Despite the sufferings of His Passion and crucifixion, Jesus cries out mercifully from the cross, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” Death could not hold Him in the tomb, for out of love He rose from the dead to open the gates of Heaven for us. What is love and mercy? Not long ago at daily Mass, Fr. Heppen talked about the number of people who come to Reconciliation con-fessing a “lack of patience.” I chuckled, thinking, “How could he have known my confessions for the last 26 years (beginning with the day I said, “I do” and including the parenting of four children). The light-hearted thoughts were stopped cold when he continued, preaching: “In reality, one’s lack of patience is nothing more than a cover-up for the lack of mercy shown toward others.” That was harsh. For whatever reason, I could usually blame my lack of patience on my husband, chil-dren, or others, justifying my lack of virtue on their inability to do or act in a way that agreed with me. What I did not want to consider was that my shortcomings had more to do with me than those around me. That is the problem with sin—it’s always someone else’s fault. Through Christ’s Paschal Mystery we see the horrors of what our sin is capable of and how, through God’s immense mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, He can absolve us from our sins, cleanse our soul, and reunite us to Him. Through the Sacrament of Eucharist and His unconditional love, we can be transformed from sinners to saints. Through Christ’s Passion, death, and resurrection we see God’s love and mercy lived out before our eyes. If we truly reflected on the deep meaning of these Mysteries, we could not help but fall down in worship and praise. If we truly believed in His Divine Presence in the Sacraments we could not help but come to worship with open and eager hearts, begging for His Love and Mercy and asking that His graces be poured over us.

In a prayer contemplating Christ’s mercy, St. Faustina writes: “O Christ, let my greatest delight be to see You loved and Your praise and glory proclaimed, especially the honor of Your mercy. O Christ, let me glorify Your goodness and mercy to the last moment of my life, with every drop of my blood and every beat of my heart. Would that I be transformed into a hymn of adoration of You. When I find myself on my deathbed, may the last beat of my heart be a loving hymn glorifying

Your unfathomable mercy. Amen.”

NATIONAL SHRINE of the Little Flower

Lending Library Pope John Paul II declared the Sun-day after Easter to be celebrated as "Divine Mercy Sunday". If you would like to learn more about this feast, we have a number of resources avail-able: The Diary of St. Faustina Kowalska, "Divine Mercy in My Soul"; a book about her life titled, "Faustina"; a video on her life; and a number of free pamphlets about how to say the Divine Mercy chap-let. While the chaplet can be prayed at any time, it is especially recommended that it be done at three o'clock in the af-ternoon, "the hour of mercy", commemo-rating the hour when Jesus died on the cross. It is also believed to be very power-ful when prayed with or for someone who is dying. Lending Library hours are Sun-days from 10 am-2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15-Noon, in the Conference Cen-ter, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). For information call Kathy McGuire at 248.541.6834 or JoAn Gilleran at 248.629.4045.
