Simple Steps Checklist for Energy Efficiency Home energy efficiency upgrades are a great way to improve comfort, indoor air quality, and lower energy bills. Before investing time and money in retrofits, try doing some simple steps to cut energy usage! This Simple Steps Checklist can go a long way towards reducing bills, which can help you save up for larger expenses. After all, no furnace is efficient with an open window. Below are some simple steps that can help improve efficiency with only time and a few small investments. In unused rooms, close cooling vents, turn off window air conditioners and close doors. Install a programmable thermostat. Keep thermostat between 68°-72°F in the winter and 72-74°F in the summer. In the winter, use curtains and drapes to keep warm air in during the night time, open them during the day. Ceiling fans spinning clockwise can circulate warm air and increase comfort, while spinning counter-clock wise can circulate cool air. Keep fire damper closed when fireplace is not in use. Remove window air-conditioner units during winter months. Clean/replace air filters in air- conditioner and furnace every season. HEATING & COOLING BUILDING MATERIALS Install weather stripping/sealant on windows and doors. Caulk and seal gaps and leaks around outlets, piping, and wall/floor seams. Install window film to reduce glare and heat gain. Adjust sprinklers to water plants, not the driveway, and water early in the morning. Install a rain barrel to capture and reuse storm water. Simple Steps Checklist for Energy Efficiency Home energy efficiency upgrades are a great way to improve comfort, indoor air quality, and lower energy bills. Before investing time

and money in retrofits, try doing some simple steps to cut energy usage! This Simple Steps Checklist can go a long way towards reducing bills, which can help you save up for larger expenses. After all, no furnace is efficient with an open window. Below are some

simple steps that can help improve efficiency with only time and a few small investments.

• In unused rooms, close cooling vents, turn off window air conditioners and close doors.

• Install a programmable thermostat.

• Keep thermostat between 68°-72°F in the winter and 72-74°F in the summer.

• In the winter, use curtains and drapes to keep warm air in during the night time, open them during the day.

• Ceiling fans spinning clockwise can circulate warm air and increase comfort, while spinning counter-clock wise can circulate cool air.

• Keep fire damper closed when fireplace is not in use.

• Remove window air-conditioner units during winter months.

• Clean/replace air filters in air- conditioner and furnace every season.

HEATING & COOLING

BUILDING MATERIALS

• Install weather stripping/sealant on windows and doors.

• Caulk and seal gaps and leaks around outlets, piping, and wall/floor seams.

• Install window film to reduce glare and heat gain.

• Adjust sprinklers to water plants, not the driveway, and water early in the morning.

• Install a rain barrel to capture and reuse storm water.

• Plant drought-resistant trees and plants.

• Install a pool cover to reduce evaporation.

• Install a drip-irrigation system.

OUTDOOR WATER USAGE

CHECK WHAT YOU HAVE DONE...

Simple Steps Checklist for Energy Efficiency

• Install power strips or unplug electronics that are not in use.

• Reduce computer monitor brightness or turn off the computer when not in use.

HOME & OFFICE ELECTRONICS

LIGHTING

• Upgrade light bulbs with energy efficient alternatives like LEDs.

• Always turn off lights when you leave the room.

• Remove bulbs from some fixtures for softer light and more savings.

• Use natural light as much as possible.

• Install dimmer switches.

• Regularly clean the condenser coils on refrigerator.

• Adjust refrigerator temperature to 37-40°F and freezer temperature to 0°F.

• Use correct sized pots/pans- burner’s energy is wasted when pans do not totally cover their surface area.

• Use energy savings settings on appliances, if applicable.

• Plan out ingredients; don’t leave the refrigerator door open.

• Run dishwasher when filled to capacity, but not overloaded.

KITCHEN

Brought to you by...

• Install faucet aerators.

• Install thermostatic control valves and low-flow shower heads.

• Lower water heater temperature to 120°F and wrap in a water-heater blanket.

• Repair leaky sinks and toilets.

• Insulate hot water pipes.

• Keep showers under 5 minutes.

• Use a bucket to collect “warm up” water from sinks/baths to water plants.

• Turn off water when not in use- don’t run water while washing dishes/brushing teeth.

• “Launder Smart”- do not overfill washer or dryer, use cold water/energy savings settings, air dry clothes.
