3.3.4 * Draft Curtain.A fixed or automatically deployable barrier that protrudes downward from the ceiling to channel, contain, or prevent the migration of smoke.
Statement of Problem and Substantiation for Public Comment
As written, a deployable draft curtain could mean a manually operated unit. In order to be effective, the deployable unit must automatically deploy when needed. To ensure deployment of the non-fixed draft curtain, the word “automatically” should be added just before the word “deployable”. This removes the allowance of manually deployed draft curtains.

The airborne solid and liquid particulates and gases involved evolved when a material undergoes pyrolysis or combustion, together with the quantity of air that is entrained or otherwise mixed into the mass. [NFPA 556, 2011]
Statement of Problem and Substantiation for Public Comment
Many NFPA documents include the same definition of "smoke", including NFPA 90A, 204, 318, 556, 921 and 1404. It is essential that the definition not be changed. My suggestion that NFPA 556 be used for the extraction is because it is the most generic document, but any of the others could be chosen also.
Moreover, the concept of smoke addresses the products of combustion "evolved" and it does not address what products are "involved" in any issue.
This comment is made on behalf of the Glossary on Terminology committee set up to obtain uniformity of definitions.

The proposed revision in PI-5 is appropriate and easier to understand. It is not necessary from a technical perspective, but it makes NFPA 92 a better document because it reduces repetitive language and provides requirements more concisely. A better standard will be easier for designers, installers and enforcers.

5.5.2.5Where draft curtains are used, they shall remain in place and shall confine smoke when exposed to the maximum predicted temperature for the design interval time, assuming a design fire in close proximity to the draft curtain.Where used, deployable draft curtains shall not reset automatically.

FR-2 now allows draft curtains to be deployable. PC-4 proposes to make those "automatically" deployable. This proposed revision to FR-16 adds the requirement that deployable draft curtains not reset automatically, but manually, so that the draft curtain stays in place while needed. Once the incident is over, manual reset can occur.

A8.6.5.1.1 Testing shall be conducted and a final report submitted within 90 days after the completion of testing.
8.6.5.1.2 Testing and auditing of records shall be performed in order to issue a certificate of compliance.
8.6.5.1.2.1* Testing shall include the verification that devices are properly annunciated at the control panel, verification that system function by placing zones into alarm and checking the input and output signals and device functionality against the information contained within the approved smoke control report.
A.8.6.5.1.2.1 - Auditing of records should include verification of the location and integrity of smoke zone boundaries to approved documents, review of maintenance records of devices and equipment making up the smoke control system (initiating devices, fans, dampers, controls, doors and windows if self or automatic closing), verify that the appropriate maintenance requirements are being met by the facility, and previous testing done in conjunction with fire alarm system testing. Documentation should also be on forms submitted as a part of the preliminary smoke control report.
8.6.5.1.2.2*. The AHJ shall be notified immediately in writing, whenever it is discovered that any component or system is inoperable and is creating a life threatening situation.
A8.6.5.1.2.2 Upon discovery of any non-complying aspect of the smoke control system that cannot be corrected immediately, the owner must notify the AHJ prior to them concluding the testing and leaving for the day. All non-complying aspects must be corrected to ensure that the smoke control system is properly operating as designed.

This is similar to PI-2. We support the reason provided by the proponent of PI-2. It is important to notify the AHJ if there are deficiencies. The TC statement only addresses a small part of this proposal that is proposed for the annex in A8.6.5.1.2.2. To address the TC concern, this comment changes the annex to say the "owner" not the “testing individual” must notify the “AHJ”. As well, the first sentence presented in PI-2 of A.8.6.5.1.2.1 was deleted.
