PARISH MISSION May 15—17, 2017 WHAT IS A MISSION? Are you so involved in scurrying around

with business, children, family, social activities that you have little time for quiet contemplation with God? A mission is a time of special grace when God calls us into a deeper relationship with Him, a time for personal growth, a time to listen to God, a time of spiritual refreshment and invigoration. WHO IS A MISSION FOR? The Mission is for all people, from inactive to very active. It is for all ages and for any stage in life — married, single, divorced, separated, widow, etc. We particularly invite those who want to know more about the church today and how it can take an active role in the everyday experiences of work, leisure, family, and politics. WHAT FORM WILL THIS MISSION TAKE? Each evening there will be a special parish mass and homily designated to increase our spirituality. A social will follow in the hall to enhance our feeling of parish community. The mission priest will be available for informal chats and questions and answers. So that all may attend, other parish functions will be canceled during Mission Week. WHO WILL LEAD THE MISSION? Fr. Richard Gielow, C.M. was born in Lasalle, IL. He was ordained a priest in the Congregation of the Mission, and has served as Director of Vocations, Principal and Rector of a High School Seminary, and Director and member of the Vincentian Parish Mission Center. Father Gielow holds degrees in Philosophy and Theology from DeAndreis Institute of Theology and Religious Education from Catholic University of America. Father Geilow is currently the Director of the Vincentian Parish Mission Center, and is National Spiritual Advisor to the Ladies of Charity of USA, as well as National Spiritual Advisor to a Fraternal Organization called KSKJ.

Lenten Observances: The Living Rosary will be prayed Monday morning, April 12, at 8:15 in the school gym with all the students. Everyone is invited! 4th Grade Field Trip: The fourth graders will travel to the state capitol on Monday, April 3. Academic Bowl:

The final match of the season was a successful one! The two teams from SSPP took 2nd place and 4th place. Three of the top ten individual scorers were from SSPP as well! Great job and we’re already looking forward to next season. Vocations: Father Francis Doyle visited with the students on Tuesday. He spoke to them about how the discernment of a vocation to married life, single life, or religious life is a different process than discerning how one will make a living. He complimented the students on their questions and the quality of their religious education.

INFORMATION REGARDING MASS INTENTIONS: (adapted from the Catholic Missourian, 2/14/14) For many centuries, the devotion of the faithful has led them to seek to support the celebration of the Mass monetarily to help offset expenses such as candles, hosts, utili-ties, etc. This devotion recognizes the importance for the Church and the world that the Mass be prayed and offered. At the same time, these faithful request that the priest also remember their particular intention when he lead the Church in offering the Mass. Such a monetary offering, when attached to an intention, is called a Mass stipend or Mass offering. It should never be understood as “buying a Mass”. The Church condemns the buying and selling of spiritual goods in the strongest of terms. Rather, it is a request by one of the faithful that the priest remember their intention at Mass. As a sign of devotion and a way of participating in that Mass, they include a monetary offering to offset the expenses of the Mass. In 1974, Pope Paul VI stated that the principal beneficiary of Mass offerings is the Church herself. In part, due to the support which such offerings bring, the Mass can continue to take place. The secondary beneficiaries are the donors who profit as a result of their spiritual dispo-sition — almsgiving — and the celebration of the Eucharist, which enables their actual par-ticipation in the Mass. This is how the Code of Canon Law puts it: Canon 946: The Christian faithful who make an offering so that the Mass may be applied for their intention contribute to the good of the Church and by their offering take part in the concern of the church for the support of its ministers and works.

April is Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness month in the United States. Recent statistics tell us that one out of every four girls, and one out of every six boys, are assaulted before they turn 18. Education and vigilance can help stop abuse from happening. A calm, thoughtful response can assist victim/survivors when they disclose abuse. Every one of us can help Protect and Heal.
