My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!

We have the most generous parish in the world! (Do I sound like a proud father or what?!) The Giving Tree, year after year, and this year is no exception, is just another indication of the generous spirit of our parish family of St. Andrew! As the Coordinator, Mina Flores, put it, “Our community is always full of surprises!” This year again was a good year of showing to others God’s goodness but our generosity. It echoes so beautifully what our St. Andrew the Apostle School has also been focusing on developing, namely, the virtue of generosity throughout this past Advent and now into the Christmas season. Sixty-one (61) families registered for receiving from the Giving Tree, which included 190 children! All of the 190 children received a gift of some kind! Thank you, generous St. Andrew’s! In addition, as of this Christmas date, 24 envelopes were given to St. Vincent de Paul to distribute to their needy families, 20 gift cards to Prison Ministry along with five (5) large bags of gifts, 68 gift cards distributed to children and families, and 25 jackets donated by the Knights of Columbus! I want to extend a huge Thank You to Mina Flores and the committee that helped her out this year, namely, Ralph Rodriguez, Becky Rodriguez, Marisol Garcia, Paco Flores, Ana Maria Garcia, and Mary Rodriguez. THANK YOU ALL on the committee, and THANK YOU ALL who donated! As one family put it: “Thank you so much for all your help. Christmas wouldn’t be the same without all your help.” Another family wrote: “I would like to thank all the families who have opened your hearts to help myself and my husband out with the hard times we have. And being able to see their smiles on their faces brings great joy. Thank you!” Another family wrote: “Dear Parish Family, Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generosity. Thank you for the gifts and prayers, we really appreciate your kindness. God bless!” Another note: “Thank you for the gift, you make me happy. God bless you! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!” Another family: “Muchas gracias por los regalos. Y Dios los llene de bendiciones. Feliz Navidad y próspero año nuevo!” Another note: “From our family to yours we’d like to give thanks for providing us with these gifts in this season of giving. As always Merry Christmas. Thank you!♥” One more: “Dear Parish Family, Thank you so much for your Christmas generosity! It means so much to our family! Love, S.” One little boy wrote so beautifully: “The joy of Christmas be your portion.” And one last one: “To all of the giving and thoughtful people of St. Andrew Parish, for making our Christmas brighter! We Thank you so very much. God Bless, and Thank You All!” If we stop but a moment and reflect, we realize just how generous God is by showering us with the abundant gifts we have; especially as a St. Andrew Parish community. For me, these gifts continue to be our growing and vibrant school, the academic excellence it provides, and love that is shared daily between our students, staff, and parishioners. As your Pastor, it is a great privilege for me to serve you and be such a wonderful parish and school community. Last month our School Advisory Council (S.A.C.) members, along with some staff members, participated in our first retreat, entitled Getting to Greatness through Board Effectiveness and Servant Leadership. The meeting was very informative and inspiring, and as a result, I am happy to announce that, through this experience and with the help of the Holy Spirit, the S.A.C members were moved to create and implement a Vision Statement for our school. This Vision statement will be part of our B.E.S.T. Plan, and will act as a high-level reminder of our overall mission. The Vision Statement is simple and is in line with the mission of the entire Church, and is also what our patron saint, St. Andrew the Apostle, is noted for in the Gospel of John 1, 41 “Then he (St. Andrew) brought his brother, Simon to Jesus”. Our Vision Statement is, “At St. Andrew the Apostle Parish School we are called to introduce the world to its Savior!” This statement, coupled with our Success Criteria, Mission and Value Statement, while being supported by our Goals, provides us with very clear direction about how to continue to grow our school/parish as part of the overall Church’s mission, which is to introduce the world to its Savior. The virtue of Generosity is a Capital Virtue. It comes from a heart that wants to share Good News, like St. Andrew, our patron saint. Generosity overcomes the sin of greed. This virtue can involve donating money, or giving up our free time and talents for the less fortunate, or even giving our possessions away. It is an excellent way to detach ourselves from the things of this world, which is exactly what Jesus told the rich young man who asked him what else he must do to gain eternal life over and above keeping the 10 Commandments. Generosity is NOT philanthropy out of our surplus wealth or government welfare programs. Generosity involves our personal sacrifice, and it is indeed sacrificial to our way of life. As we celebrate this Christmas Holiday season, I ask that you practice and live the virtue of Generosity throughout your daily lives this coming week and throughout the new year. Christmas is a perfect time for us as a parish family, to collectively educate our children about the virtue of Generosity; while introducing the world to its Savior through word and deed! God be with you and your family – Merry Christmas!

In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

Jesus was born into a really broken, violent world. It was a dark place that needed a Savior. He wasn’t born into a perfect world, a picturesque setting — not at all. The truth is that He brought light into the darkness. He brought hope into turmoil. And He is still doing the same. If you feel like our world is hopeless, like the violence is too much, the darkness too overbearing — then the Church’s ancient Advent prayer of “Come Lord Jesus” is what you need on your lips. The tension of Advent is between the joy of a Savior and the con-stant reality of our broken world in which sin and sin’s effects remain. What can we do? We can pray more fervently every day, “come Lord Jesus.” And we can pray for the grace to believe that He will come every day to transform our hearts into ones of love and mercy and kindness so that with His grace we can make a difference in our world. He is still bringing light to the darkness, and He needs our hands and feet to help.

We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen. GRANT ETERNAL REST, LIGHT AND PEACE TO ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED: Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 for the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital ministry team or homebound and in need of communion.

Hospital Visitation of Parishioners Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us, too, at the office, ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!

A COMMUNITY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT

SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION CATECHUMENATE

The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.

SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT MARRIAGE

Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.

ORDERS Those seeking assistance in discerning a call to ordained ministry are encouraged to call the parish offices.

SACRAMENTS OF HEALING RECONCILIATION

Reconciliation is available each Saturday afternoon, 3:00pm, Wednesday evening, 5:45-6:45pm, through seasonal communal services, and by appointment.

ANOINTING Anointing of the Sick is offered through seasonal services, and always by request. If hospitalized, please immediately seek anointing from the Catholic chaplain.

I would like to have my house blessed. Please contact me to make arrangements.
