SUNDAY THOUGHT

Mark 13:24-32

This weekend we listen to Jesus’ brief account of the

end of the world from St. Mark’s Gospel. In Mark,

Jesus’ focus seems less on the tribulations which

consume so much of our end time thinking, as they are

turned toward His glorious manifestation as one who

gathers in His elect. Jesus doesn’t want His return to be

dreaded as much as He wants us to greet it as the return

of a longed for friend. This can only happen if we seek

daily to remain close to Him now. If we are familiar

with Jesus as a source of comfort and support, a

companion to rely upon, and one who forgives and

heals, the time of this return in glory won’t frighten us,

but further fill us with Joy.

THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 18, 2018

THE CELEBRATION OF THE SAINTS

Saint Luke Hwang Sok-tu, Martyr (+1866)

Luke came from Yonp’ung, Ch’ungh’ong,

North Province of Korea. His parents were of a high

social standing, and intended him for a government

post. When Luke was twenty, he traveled to Seoul to

take the exam for government work. In an inn, he meet

an educated Christian, who talked eagerly with Luke

about the Faith and gave him some Christian books.

Luke returned home only three days later, determined

to become a Christian.

When Luke’s father realized that Luke had not

taken the exam, he beat him severely. But Luke

carried on, and eventually converted his own wife.

When Luke’s father threatened to kill him, he

responded by refusing to speak for two years. His

family tried everything to make him talk. In the face of

Luke’s persistence, though, they began to open their

own hearts to the Catholic religion.

After the death of Luke’s father, his relations

confiscated his property. Luke chose to become a

catechist. He was made an assistant to missionary

Bishop Anthony Daveluy, and when persecution

came, he went with the bishop when he turned himself

over to the police. Luke catechized others in prison,

even addressing his tormentors. On Good Friday,

March 30, 1866, Bishop Daveluy and two priest were

brought to the naval station near Seoul to be beheaded.

Shortly thereafter, Luke was brought out to receive his

own martyr’s crown. Saint Luke Hwang Sok-tu’s feast

day is September 25

WEEKLY MASS REMINDER

The Concluding Rites

“To the Concluding Rites belong the following:

a) brief announcements, should they be necessary;

b) the Priest’s Greeting and Blessing, which on

certain days and occasions is expanded and

expressed by the Prayer over the People or

another more solemn formula;

c) the Dismissal of the people by the Deacon or the

Priest, so that each may go back to doing good

works, praising and blessing God;

d) the kissing of the altar by the Priest and the

Deacon, followed by a profound bow to the altar

by the Priest, the Deacon, and the other

ministers.”

— from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal,

90.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY

“Do you have a ‘mask’ that you hide behind at work

or for company? Sometimes putting on a “good face”

is necessary, but don’t let your spouse just get the

dregs of your energy and good manners. Be your best

real self with your spouse.” — Daily Marriage Tip for

October 31, 2018 from http://www.foryourmarriage.org

HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW…

Did you know that many Catholics have contributed

to the good of society through science? Alessandro

Volta (18 February 1745 – 5 March 1827) was an

Italian scientist and a pioneer of electricity and power.

He is credited as the inventor of the electric battery.

More Catholics to come in the coming weeks…

CHURCH ETIQUETTE WITH

MONSIGNOR MANNERS

Monsignor Manners says: Jesus

commanded us to love one

another. Good Catholic etiquette

is the beginning expression of love

towards the other.

BLESSING OF THE WEEK

The Book of Blessings is the liturgical book used

by priests and deacons to bless people or objects

for religious use. If you come across a blessing

you need to receive, do not be afraid to ask a

priest or deacon.

This week’s blessing is the Blessing of Food for

Thanksgiving. In the United States, Thanksgiving

Day is a significant day. Originally, it was

celebrated by the Pilgrims and the Native

Americans to give thanks to God after the harvest

of 1621. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln

declared the last Thursday of November a

national day of thanksgiving. Use this blessing

before your meal.

Order for the Blessing of Food

for Thanksgiving (Shorter Rite)

Leader: Blessed be the name of the

Lord.

All: Now and forever.

Reader: (Read Corinthians 1:3-9 or Sirach

50:22-24 or Luke 17:11-19)

Leader: (with hands joined) God most

provident, we join all creation in

raising to you a hymn of

thanksgiving through Jesus

Christ, your Son. For

generation upon generation,

peoples of this land have sung

of your bounty; we too offer

you praise for the rich harvest

we have received at your

hands. Bless us and this food

which we share with grateful

hearts. Continue to make our

land fruitful and let our love for

you be seen in our pursuit of

peace and justice and in our

generous response to those in

need. Praise and glory to you,

Lord God, now and forever.

All: Amen.
