Fifth Sunday of Lent Today’s Readings First Reading: I will place my law within them and write it upon their hearts (Jeremiah 31). Psalm: Create a clean heart in me, O God (Psalm 51). Second Reading: Christ became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him (Hebrews 5). Gospel: If a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it produces much fruit (John 12). Readings for the Week Monday: 2 Sm 7:4-5a, 12-14a, 16; Ps 89:2-5, 27, 29; Rom 4:13, 16-18, 22; Mt 1:16, 18-21, 24a Tuesday: Nm 21:4-9; Ps 102:2-3, 16-21; Jn 8:21-30 Wednesday: Dn 3:14-20, 91-92, 95; Dn 3:52-56; Jn 8:31-42 Thursday: Gn 17:3-9; Ps 105:4-9; Jn 8:51-59 Friday: Jer 20:10-13; Ps 18:2-7; Jn 10:31-42 Saturday: Ez 37:21-28; Jer 31:10, 11-13; Jn 11:45-56 Sunday: Mk 11:1-10 or Jn 12:12-16; (procession) Is 50:4-7; Ps 22: 8-9, 17-20, 23-24; Phil 2:6-11; Mk 14:1 — 15:47 Saints and Special Observances Sunday: Fifth Sunday of Lent; Third Scrutiny Monday: St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary Friday: Abstinence; St. Turibius of Mogrovejo Scripture Reflection Because the people broke the old covenant, God promised a new covenant, not in the blood of oxen and other animals, but in the blood of the Son, Jesus Christ. This new covenant, foreseen from afar by Jeremiah and the prophets, was not to be engraved on stone, or writ-ten on paper, but carved on our hearts, so that we might know God intimately. Not by keeping many laws are we to be saved, but by the love of God, living and real in our hearts through the sacrifice of Christ. Our Eucharist is the pledge of that indwelling of Christ, and of our response of praise and thanksgiving to God for the mercy, love, and kindness shown to us in forgiving our sins and cleansing our hearts of everything evil. God issues this invita-tion to intimacy by offering us the chance to have our sufferings transformed into the per-fect love of the Savior, who first loved us. Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spir-it to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us!

New Parishioners: Welcome! Please extend a warm welcome to St. Catherine of Siena’s newest parishioners. We look forward to their involvement in parish life!

• Thomas and Nanette McCrossen • Keith and Mandi Porta Baptism: Congratulations! Congratulations to Charles Cameron Leithead, Jr., child of Charles and Kelli Cameron, who was baptized recently at St. Catherine. Catholic Relief Services Collection: Thank You! Thank you for your generous support of The Catholic Relief Services Collection, for helping Jesus in disguise. 9 am Daily Mass in the Melancon Center The Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 9 am daily Masses are being offered in the Melancon Center. This is allowing those who are reinstalling the refurbished stained glass windows and protective outer layer of glass the maximum amount of time to work uninterrupted. The Wednesday 9 am School Mass will continue to be offered in church, as will the 6 pm daily Masses. Thank you for your flexibility during this temporary change.

Second Daily Mass, and Stations, during Lent During Lent 6 pm Mass is offered in addition to 9 am Mass. We have Stations of the Cross at 2:45 pm and 6:30 pm on Fridays during Lent. CRS Rice Bowl Journey to Malawi: March 18-24 This week’s Catholic Relief Services (CRS) journey focuses on farmers, who grow and sell crops to provide for their families. One way in which CRS helps is to sponsor seed fairs, where farmers gather to learn the best crops to plant for the upcoming year. Nutritious food is vital to a dignified life. If none is available, families may be forced to migrate. Visit crsricebowl.org to watch a video and learn more about Malawi. Rosary for Fr. Ronnie: March 19 and 26 On Monday, March 19, and Monday, March 26, the rosary prayed for Fr. Ronnie’s healing will be at 5:30 pm. Please note the time change due to the 6 pm daily Mass during Lent.

Parish Lenten Mission: March 19-22 Our Lenten Mission will take place Monday-Thursday, March 19-22, 7 pm, in the church. Fr. Kevin MacDonald, C.Ss.R. will speak on “Beginning Today.” Each evening of the mission will be different, but all will consist of a scripture reading, reflections, singing and praying together. It will be a grace-filled happening, an opportunity to experi-ence in a special way God’s saving presence. If you have abandoned the faith of your youth, the mission is for you. If you have been on-again, off-again in the practice of your Catholic religion, the mission is for you. If you have wondered what is going on in the Church today, the mission is for you. If you have been faithful to your Catholic faith, the mission is for you. If you feel you need to know more about how to pray, the mission is for you. If you judge yourself to be in need of spir-itual growth, the mission is for you. If you are a sinner or a saint or somewhere in between, the mission is for you. The mission is for everyone, but especially for you. To make it easier for entire fami-lies to attend, there will be babysitting every evening. Contact Madylin Schneller, [email protected], with the number of children you will be bringing and their ages.

Sago Palm Branches Needed by March 21 The Rosary Altar Society is in need of fresh, green, unblemished Sago palm branches for floral decorations in church. Please contact Donna Hummel, 451-7456, or Tina D’Antoni, 453-3222, if you have some to donate. The Altar Society hopes to have a sufficient number of Sago palm branches by March 21. Due to the recent freezing temperatures, the parish has purchased Robellini palms to be blessed and distributed to parishioners on Palm Sunday. Lenten Fish Fry: March 23 The Men’s Club and Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a fish fry on Friday, March 23, 5:00-7:30 pm, in the Cafeteria. The following will be served: fish, shrimp, and combo plates, $9 each; and soft shell crab, $12. Plates include two hushpuppies, French fries, and Italian salad. Pizza also will be served for $2 per slice. Take out is available. Drinks and desserts will be available for purchase.

If you would like to participate, we will meet at 8 am at St. Stephen Church, 1025 Napoleon Ave. We will take the streetcar back to St. Stephen so please bring money for the street-car. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring water with you. If you have any questions, contact Fr. Tim. Go to www.stcatherineparish.com; click on K4J Vacation Bible School under the Faith Formation tab. 2018-19 Parish Calendar Requests All ministry heads should have received an email requesting your calen-dar date requests for 2018-19. You are requested to get these in on or before April 3, 2018, to allow all to be entered on the parish calendar prior to our staff calendar planning meeting. All should be sent to [email protected]. If you have questions, please call Debbie at 267-9504. Thank you in advance for your prompt response! Prayerful and Welcoming Parishioners Please consider how one might express being “Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love” as opportunities to practice the virtue of hospitality present themselves during Holy Week and Easter. For example, why not park a little ways away and then walk, if you are able, so that closer spots are available for others? If you plan to attend the 9 am or 11 am Mass on Easter Sunday, consider Mass in the Barrett Complex rather than the church. Those not customarily worshipping here will have the oppor-tunity to experience the beauty of the church and feel most included. Consider moving to the center of the pew or row of chairs to facilitate others’ entry; this also makes the ushers’ job easier. Kindly inquire, “May I help you?” if someone appears to be looking for something or experiencing difficulty. These seemingly small acts of thoughtfulness can be profoundly impactful, particularly when extended toward guests, those who may be searching for a welcoming community, or any who have felt distanced from the church for whatever reason.

Pastoral Leadership Changes Announced

Letter from Fr. Garrett Dear St. Catherine of Siena Parish, Hello from Washington, DC! I’m Fr. Garrett O’Brien and I can’t wait to begin my assign-ment as your new parochial vicar. I was born and raised in Covington, an alumnus of St. Paul’s High School and Franciscan University

of Steubenville, Ohio. I graduated there in 2007 and entered Notre Dame Seminary where I received my formation for the priesthood. During that time I had assignments at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Kenner and St. Francis of Assisi in New Orle-ans. I was ordained a priest in 2012 and then served for four years as parochial vicar at St. Joan of Arc Parish in LaPlace. I really loved my time in the “River Parishes” but our archdio-cese needed me to undertake studies in Canon Law, which is why I’m currently living in Washington DC. As soon as I finish my studies this August, I’ll begin my new assignment serving all of you at St. Catherine. While serving St. Catherine, I’ll also be serving in our Archdiocesan Tribunal. I know the Lord has great things in store for us at St. Catherine, and until we meet in August, you all will be in my prayers! In Christ, Fr. Garrett O’Brien

Letter from Fr. Ronnie Dear Parishioners of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, Since I was diagnosed with cancer last July, I have been incredibly blessed by the support I have received from you through your prayers and your words of encourage-ment. I have always been grateful to God for the privi-lege of being a part of this great Parish but no more so than in these past several months when, despite the trial of cancer, my spirits have been lifted by your loving care. As you are aware, I have been undergoing chemotherapy

as part of my cancer treatment. It is uncertain what the future treatments may entail. I have made my best efforts to minister to the pastoral needs of the parishioners of St. Catherine of Siena Parish despite traveling several times to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. I wish to take this oppor-tunity to thank all who have assisted me in my role as pastor and who have made it possible for the parish ministries to continue so well during my peri-odic absences. I wish especially to thank Fr. Tim for all he has done. However, St. Catherine is a large and remarkably vibrant Parish and needs a full time pastor. After much prayer and consultation, I have decided to step down as Pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Parish. This has not been an easy decision, but I think that it is in the best interest of all concerned. Archbish-op Aymond has graciously accepted this decision and has appointed me to serve as the Chaplain of St. Anthony’s Gardens, which is a senior residence in Covington operated by the Archdiocese of New Orleans. This assignment will allow me the time to focus on my health issues while remaining in priestly ministry. My last weekend here at St. Catherine of Siena Parish will be May 26-27, 2018. I am happy that Fr. Tim will follow me as pastor and continue to the work that we began four years ago. Again, I wish to express my gratitude for your prayers and kindness. I will continue to keep you, the parishioners of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, in my prayers. I pray that St. Catherine of Siena Parish will always be a community Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. I ask you to keep me in your pray-ers as well. May God bless you and your loved ones. Sincerely in the Lord,

Rev. Ronald L. Calkins

Transitional Deacon Andrew Gutierrez Assigned to SCS for Internship

Archbishop Aymond appointed Andrew Gutierrez to serve at St. Catherine of Siena Parish for his diaconate internship. Andrew is 24 years old and was born and raised in Metairie. He attended elementary school at his home parish of St. Clement of Rome. During his time at Archbishop Rummel High School, Andrew experienced a conver-sion and grew stronger in his faith. Andrew first started hearing the call to the priesthood as a student at ARHS. After

graduating in 2011, Andrew studied Psychology at LSU. After two years of LSU football games, developing great friendships, and being heavily involved at Christ the King Catholic Center, Andrew responded to God’s call and entered seminary. Five years later, he will be ordained a transitional deacon on May 19, 2018 in St. Louis Cathedral at 10 am. Deacon Andrew is excited to begin his assignment at St. Catherine of Siena which will last from the end of May until the middle of October. Please pray for Andrew as he completes his studies and prepares for his diaconate ordination!

New Pastoral Assignments Announced

Archbishop Aymond has made the following pastoral assignments for St. Catherine of Siena:

Pastor:

Rev. Timothy Hedrick

Effective May 28, 2018

Parochial Vicar: Rev. Garrett O’Brien

Effective August 1, 2018

Letter from Fr. Tim Dear St. Catherine of Siena, It has been a true blessing to serve with Fr. Ronnie for the last four years! I am grateful for him being a strong mentor for me and for his friendship. He is a good and faithful priest of the Lord! Through his time at St. Catherine and everywhere he served over the last 40 years as a priest, Fr. Ronnie has generously given of himself and touched the lives of many people. Please continue to pray for Fr. Ronnie during this time of transition and for his health!

In order to celebrate Fr. Ronnie’s 40th Anniversary and to thank him for his service as our pastor, we will host a Mass of Thanksgiving on May 26 at the 4 pm vigil Mass. After the Mass, there will be a reception in the gym. Everyone is invited to attend! Over the last four years, St. Catherine of Siena has become home for me. I am looking forward to continuing to serve at SCS as pastor. Please pray for me also as I take on these new responsibilities. I am looking forward to working with the parish staff, school staff, and all of the ministry leaders and volunteers in our parish. We are truly blessed with a strong community of faith! I am also looking forward to welcoming Fr. Garrett O’Brien and Deacon Andrew Gutierrez and to working with them as we serve the people of God at SCS. We are blessed to have both! St. Catherine of Siena…pray for us! Fr. Tim

Parish Mission Prayer

God, our father, we offer you praise and thanksgiving for all the many gifts you have given us

through Jesus, your Son. We thank you especially for the gift of our parish mission.

Loving and gracious God,

quiet our minds and hearts, that we may be open to the gift of your truth.

Grant that our mission may be: a time of grace for all,

a time of growth for the young, a time of refreshment for the old a time of renewal for families,

a time of healing for the broken, a time of joy for the sorrowing,

a time of challenge for the complacent, a time of forgiveness for the sinner,

a time of strength for the holy, a time of homecoming for those who have been away.

Grant, most loving God

that our mission may bring down your richest blessings on each and every member of our parish community.

We pray through the intercession of Mary, our mother,

in the name of Jesus Christ who lives with you and the Holy Spirit forever.

Amen.
