Thwarting Wormwood I’m part of a book club of Catho-lic men. We meet every other Wednesday evening, for an hour, at the home of one of our parish-ioners. Mostly, we focus on the book we’re reading. At this time, we’re reading C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters, and learning how cleverly the Devil works on us to keep us from growing in holiness. At our last meeting, we read about how the Devil tries to keep us from acting on our good reso-lutions. Screwtape (in letter 13) is advising his nephew Worm-wood how to manipulate a heart that is seeking the Lord. “The great thing is to prevent his (the Christian) doing anything. As long as he does not convert it (his resolution to change) into action, it does not matter how much he thinks about this new repentance. ..No amount of piety in his imagi-nation and affections will harm us if we can keep it out of his will.” This happens to us all the time. We are filled with the inspiration to pray, with the knowledge of the transformative power of prayer, perhaps we’ve even touched the mystery of the over-flowing mercy of God who stoops to our lowly state and offers us relationship with Him. From these insights we rejoice in the Lord. Our heart swims with con-fidence, peace, contentment. I’m going to be okay. God is. And, He is with me. But this is where Wormwood sets the trap. He entices us to keep everything in the intellect, to con-tinue to marvel (briefly is best) about the goodness of God but

prayer will do for us. He wants us to share in its power. And thus, toward the end of his hom-ily, he will provide a commitment form to us and encourage us to grasp this gift being offered us. It is at this point that Wormwood will make his pitch. A baby will cry. Two kids will start pinching each other in the pew. The lead on the pencil will break. You name it. We are going to be en-ticed by distraction of all kinds. We will have to push through these temptations and make our decision. We know what our heart needs. Wormwood, be gone! I am praying for the success of this weekend, for the protection of the Holy Angels on our parish community. May the prayer of St. Teresa attend us: “Let nothing disturb thee; Let nothing dismay thee; All things pass; God never changes. Patience attains all that it strives for. He who has God finds he lacks nothing: God alone suffices.” And may God bless us on November 1/2 as we make our commitment to draw near to Him in Eucharistic Adoration.

Fr. Walsh

avoid doing anything about it. And if he can keep our mind on the thousand thoughts and things swirling around us, or our feet plodding forward across the thou-sand miles we still have to walk that day, all the better. It is when we stop, talk to God, or sign a commitment form that Worm-wood is thwarted. “The more of-ten he feels without action,” Screwtape explains, “the less he will be able ever to act, and, in the long run, the less he will be able to feel.” On the weekend of November 1/2, Father Victor Warkulwiz will speak to us about Eucharistic ado-ration. Father was ordained a priest in 1991, and has served in the ministry of promoting parish Eucharistic adoration since his ordination. His interesting life prior to the priesthood included a PhD in physics from Temple Uni-versity and many years of work in this industry. He has taught sci-ence, philosophy, history, astron-omy, logic, chemistry, physics, mathematics and creationism ver-sus evolution at Magdalen Col-lege in the U.K. Father has seen the physical world but also knows the spiritual world. He understands how at-oms act. He has seen the power of God under the appearance of a consecrated Host. He will inform us about this mystery. He will inspire us with stories of conver-sion, transformation and blessings that come to those who give one hour to Jesus each week in prayer. He will invite us to give the gift of Eucharistic adoration to our heart, our family, our par-ish, our community, and our Church. He knows what this

Catholic Spiritual Mentorship Forming You to Form Others On collaboration with Holy Family School of Faith, the Apostles of the Interior Life Spiritual Mentorship Program is a two-year course of study combining eight distance learning coursed with four one-week intensive sessions offered in-residence at Savior Pastoral Center in Kansas City, Kansas. The program aims to form Spiritual Mentors to serve as guide and companion to others on their journey to holiness. It is designed for Catholics who have a desire to develop a deep prayer and sacramental life, a desire to increase their knowledge of the Catholic faith, a desire to grow in the virtues and a desire to help others to do the same. Applications are currently being accepted for classes starting in January. For more infor-mation, please visit: www.schooloffaith.com or call Mary at 402.984.6624.

Our Special Guest Fr. Victor Warkulwiz, M.S.S.

Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Fr. Victor Warkulwiz from the Missionary Priests of the Blessed Sacrament will be our guest speaking at all the Masses the weekend of November 1 & 2, on the benefits and necessity of Perpetual Adoration in our parish. Fr. Warkulwiz resides in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. He has taken his message of Perpetual Adoration to several hundred parishes in 47 states, Canada, and elsewhere. Fr. Victor has dedicated himself to visiting a parish every weekend where the desire to establish or maintain Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration has been expressed. The fruits of his labor have been bountiful and include a spiritual renewal within each parish. Please remember that Perpetual Adoration in a parish is not just for a day, a week, a month or a year. Rather it is for always. It is not temporary, but ongoing, lasting, permanent. Saint John Paul II said: “Our essential commitment in life is to grow spiritually in the climate of the Holy Eucharist.” There is no greater love given to Catholics than Christ present in the Eucharist. Please do not miss hearing Fr. Warkulwiz. His homily is most inspiring and has touched the hearts of thousands of Catholics in bringing them to a deeper understanding and love of the Blessed Sacrament.

“Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive honor, glory, and praise…”

STEWARDSHIP ~ “Whoever sacrifices to any god, save to the Lord only, shall be utterly destroyed.” Exodus 22:20 Do you out other “gods” before God? Is your love of money, power, status or some personal posses-sions greater than your love for God? If so, you may want to pay attention to the scripture because you are not going to like the outcome. The good news - it’s not too late to put God first in your life.
