“PUT OUT INTO THE DEEP”

No matter how many times I have heard the gospel story for this weekend, there’s

always something new and refreshing that can be discerned or drawn from it.

Let’s first lay down the context of the story.

Jesus was in the process of choosing or calling his closest collaborators, his disciples. It was pretty

bold for Jesus to get into the boat of Simon without saying any word. Simon was gracious enough to allow

Jesus to use his boat as a pulpit. We were told that Jesus taught the crowd from the boat, and when he was

finished, he asked Simon to lower the nets.

At this point, Simon was not yet part of Jesus’ band, telling us that apart from Jesus, to belong outside

the circle of Christ is to miss something truly significant. “No catch” implies barrenness, non-fulfillment,

emptiness, desolation or even death. Simon’s pleading to Jesus to leave him alone after the great catch is a

striking definition on this emptiness too: “Depart from me for I am a sinful man.” Sin makes us unfruitful,

renders us empty.

But, Jesus is willing to change that. His invitation to Simon to become a “fisher of men” is an

invitation from focusing on “fish”, meaning what is material, earthly and worldly, to that of “men”, meaning

that what is truly important, like relationships and people, highlights the fact that to follow Jesus requires the

reordering of priorities and rearrangement of values.

By virtue of our baptism, we too are being called to be fishers of men, to reorder our focus from fish

(from what is material and passing) to men (to what is lasting, important and essential that brings authentic

joy).

We are Fourth Grade students at St. Cecilia School. We would like to share with you

our learning in Religion class and our adopted priest, Father Vincent Cunniff. In Religion,

we learned about Jesus, Mary, the disciples, and many other role models throughout time.

One of the most important lessons we learned is about the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is

very important since it gives us wisdom, knowledge, and understanding which is very useful

when we have a test!

One thing that really stood out to us was Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Mother

Joseph knew that a good education made good citizens, so she made Catholic schools!

Mother Joseph did many good deeds to all, just like our adopted priest, Father Cunniff.

Our 98 year old adopted priest, Father Vincent Cunniff, had a very amazing life.

When Father Cunniff was young, he was in World War II. He wanted to be a pilot,

but instead, he became a bombardier. During a bad incident during the war, he prayed that

if he came out alive, he would become a priest. We have been sending letters to him for

three months. Two of the things we remember him saying are: “Remember prayer works

both ways” and “The voice of God is not like getting hit over the head — it is a quiet voice

in our soul.” We can all learn from the wisdom of the Holy Spirit and Father Cunniff!

time Maintenance-Custodial Lead responsible for maintaining

all buildings, equipment and grounds. The successful

candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent,

Carpentry and painting skills are required. Must be able to lift

a minimum of 50lbs. Regular hours are 8:30am to 5pm. We

JESUS I TRUST IN YOU

Did you know that we have been

praying the Chaplet of Divine

Mercy for the sick, dying and

pro-life causes since

February 2011?

Saint John Paul II imparted two Apostolic Blessings for those

who will pray the Chaplet during Adoration of the Blessed

Sacrament. Copies of these blessings are hanging in the

anteroom to the Adoration Chapel. One blessing is for those

who pray for the sick and dying; the other blessing is for those

praying for pro-life causes. The Apostolic Blessings extend

indefinitely to all those who participate.

WHY SHOULD WE PRAY FOR THE SICK AND DYING?

Jesus told St. Faustina: “Pray as much as you can for the

dying. By your entreaties obtain for them trust in My mercy,

because they have most need of trust, and have it the least. Be

assured that the grace of eternal salvation for certain souls in

their final moment depends on your prayer (Diary, 1777).”

“My daughter, encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have

given to you. It pleases Me to grant everything they ask of Me

by saying the chaplet . . . Write that when they say this chaplet

in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father

and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the merciful

Savior (Diary, 1541).” (Note: Per St. Faustina it is not

necessary to be physically present at the bedside of the

dying person).

Please join is every Monday night at 7pm in the Adoration

Chapel to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy for the sick, dying

and pro-life causes.

LLAMADO Y PROMESA

En el evangelio de hoy, después de haber sido rechazado

y casi matado (tal era la furia de sus oyentes) en

Nazaret – lo cual vimos la semana pasada – Jesús sigue su

misión de predicación y enseñanza a las orillas del lago de

Genesaret. Incluso, el entusiasmo y la cantidad de gente

que se junta para escucharle es tal que se ve obligado a

subirse a una barca de pesca para poder seguirlo haciendo.

Al terminar esto, les pide a los pescadores que salgan de

nuevo a echar las redes para otra pesca, sabiendo,

seguramente, que nos les había ido bien la noche anterior.

Imagínese la sorpresa cuando, obedeciendo a Jesús, logran

obtener una pesca tan numerosa que necesitan pedir ayuda

de sus compañeros para no romper las redes con el

número enorme de pescados.

Al final, Jesús les llama a ser pescadores de hombres, y

ellos vislumbran en el milagro la promesa del Señor de

futuras pescas asombrosas y grandísimas.

NUEVOS PLANES PARA un GRUPO JUVENIL

Hay un grupo de personas de la comunidad de Santa

Cecilia que han estado reuniéndose es estas últimas

semanas, para desarrollar planes para el comienzo de un

nuevo GRUPO JUVENIL. Se está visualizando como un

grupo de jóvenes entre las edades de 13 y 17 años, que se

reunirán los días VIERNES por las tardes, probablemente

en el salón de la chimenea del Centro Parroquial.

Se están formulando detalles sobre el trabajo del grupo,

el liderazgo, el enfoque principal, y el apoyo necesario de

parte de los padres de familia y los otros adultos de la

parroquia.

Por favor, mantenga a este grupo en sus oraciones, y

esté atento a la información sobre el progreso y la fecha del

nuevo comienzo.

Es muy importante que todos recordemos que cuando

entramos en la iglesia, estamos pisando “tierra santa”:

¡Estamos en la casa de DIOS!.

No es ni un salón, ni un gimnasio, ni un edificio

cualquiera: este es donde se complace el Todopoderoso

y Eterno estar con nosotros para que podamos estar en

Su Presencia sacramental, adorarlo, alabarlo, y

venerarlo, y traerle nuestras preocupaciones y

peticiones. Es un lugar de respeto y, generalmente,

SILENCIO. Este silencio es nuestro reconocer a Aquel

en cuya presencia estamos, primero y antes que nada;

pero, a la misma vez, nuestro silencio reconoce que a

menudo hay otros que están orando, y no debemos

estorbarles con ruido innecesario.

La manera que nos vestimos y nos comportamos

expresa también nuestra actitud y nuestro respeto por

el Señor. Mantengamos silencio, en todo lo posible, a no

ser que estemos celebrando la Eucaristía u otro

sacramento, y AYUDEMOS A NUESTROS HIJOS a

hacer lo mismo. Pero YO debo poner el ejemplo.

Ahora tenemos a unos servidores que han estado

ayudando, a las familias que lo deseen, a darles a sus

hijos LA EXPERIENCIA de hacer oración en la capilla

ante el Santísimo Sacramento. Esto ocurre CADA

SÁBADO por la tarde en Santa Cecilia, entre

5 y 6:45 PM.

LOS RESULTADOS hasta el momento han sido muy

hermosos. Los niños mismos están felices y se sienten

muy en paz ante el Santísimo, sienten una cercanía

mayor a Dios, y saben, más que nunca, que Dios les ama

mucho. Ellos mismos lo dicen en sus propias palabras.

Cualquier familia que desea puede acercarse a la

capilla del Santísimo en este horario y ver si les gustaría

They cried one to the other, "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts! All the earth is filled with his glory!"

At the sound of that cry, the frame of the door shook and the house was filled with smoke.

Then I said, "Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean

ember that he had taken with tongs from the altar.

unless you believed in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ

died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures; that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day in

GOSPEL ~ LUKE 5:1-11

While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of

Gennesaret. He saw two boats there alongside the lake; the fishermen had disembarked and were washing

their nets. Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance

from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. After he had finished speaking, he

said to Simon, "Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch." Simon said in reply, "Master, we

have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets." When they

had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. They signaled to their partners

in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that the boats were in danger of

sinking. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, "Depart from me, Lord, for I am a

sinful man." For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him, and

likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of Simon. Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be

afraid; from now on you will be catching men." When they brought their boats to the shore, they left

everything and followed him.

Había dos serafines junto a él, con seis alas cada uno, que se gritaban el uno al otro: “Santo, santo, santo es el Señor, Dios de los

ejércitos; su gloria llena toda la tierra”.

Temblaban las puertas al clamor de su voz y el templo se llenaba de humo. Entonces exclamé: “¡Ay de mí!, estoy perdido, porque

soy un hombre de labios impuros, que habito en medio de un pueblo de labios impuros, porque he visto con mis ojos al Rey y Señor

de los ejércitos”.

Después voló hacia mí uno de los serafines. Llevaba en la mano una brasa, que había tomado del altar con unas tenazas. Con la

brasa me tocó la boca, diciéndome: “Mira: Esto ha tocado tus labios. Tu iniquidad ha sido quitada y tus pecados están perdonados”.

Escuché entonces la voz del Señor que decía: “¿A quién enviaré? ¿Quién irá de parte mía?” Yo le respondí: “Aquí estoy, Señor,

envíame”.

Les transmití, ante todo, lo que yo mismo recibí: que Cristo murió por nuestros pecados, como dicen las Escrituras; que fue

sepultado y que resucitó al tercer día, según estaba escrito; que se le apareció a Pedro y luego a los Doce; después se apareció a más

de quinientos hermanos reunidos, la mayoría de los cuales vive aún y otros ya murieron. Más tarde se le apareció a Santiago y luego

a todos los apóstoles.

Finalmente, se me apareció también a mí, que soy como un aborto. Porque yo perseguí a la Iglesia de Dios y por eso soy el último

de los apóstoles e indigno de llamarme apóstol. Sin embargo, por la gracia de Dios, soy lo que soy, y su gracia no ha sido estéril en

mí; al contrario, he trabajado más que todos ellos, aunque no he sido yo, sino la gracia de Dios, que está conmigo. De cualquier

manera, sea yo, sean ellos, esto es lo que nosotros predicamos y esto mismo lo que ustedes han creído.

EVANGELIO ~ LUCAS 5, 1-11

En aquel tiempo, Jesús estaba a orillas del lago de Genesaret y la gente se agolpaba en torno suyo para oír la palabra de Dios. Jesús

vio dos barcas que estaban junto a la orilla. Los pescadores habían desembarcado y estaban lavando las redes. Subió Jesús a una de

las barcas, la de Simón, le pidió que la alejara un poco de tierra, y sentado en la barca, enseñaba a la multitud.

Cuando acabó de hablar, dijo a Simón: “Lleva la barca mar adentro y echen sus redes para pescar”. Simón replicó: “Maestro, hemos

trabajado toda la noche y no hemos pescado nada; pero, confiado en tu palabra, echaré las redes”. Así lo hizo y cogieron tal cantidad

de pescados, que las redes se rompían. Entonces hicieron señas a sus compañeros, que estaban en la otra barca, para que vinieran a

ayudarlos. Vinieron ellos y llenaron tanto las dos barcas, que casi se hundían.

Al ver esto, Simón Pedro se arrojó a los pies de Jesús y le dijo: “¡Apártate de mí, Señor, porque soy un pecador!” Porque tanto él

como sus compañeros estaban llenos de asombro al ver la pesca que habían conseguido. Lo mismo les pasaba a Santiago y a Juan,

hijos de Zebedeo, que eran compañeros de Simón.

Entonces Jesús le dijo a Simón: “No temas; desde ahora serás pescador de hombres”. Luego llevaron las barcas a tierra y, dejándolo

todo, lo siguieron.

ORACIÓN A SAN MIGUEL ARCÁNGEL

San Miguel Arcángel, defiéndenos en la batalla. Sé nuestro amparo contra las perversidades y asechanzas del demonio.

Reprímale Dios, pedimos suplicantes, y tú, príncipe de la milicia celestial, arroja al infierno con el divino poder a Satanás y a los

otros espíritus malignos que andan dispersos por el mundo para la perdición de las almas. AMEN.
