PASTOR’S CORNER
Obedience: First Step to Authentic Love
As Jesus prepares his disciples for his impending return to the Father,
he continues to remind them about the core of their discipleship and
vocation: “If you love me, you will keep my commandment...whoever has
my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me.” This is where the core of
Christianity is found: keeping the word of God as the manifestation of love, the love which
is also our own identity. Obedience to the Gospel and the virtue of love go hand in hand.
One only loves genuinely if the Gospel is the one that guides one’s path, one’s moral
decisions and lifestyle. And, when I speak of the Gospel, I don’t refer to the kind of gospel”
that one just wants to follow out of personal convenience but, rather, the totality of our
faith. That’s why cafeteria Catholicism doesn’t make sense, where one picks and chooses
what to believe and what to follow, considering faith solely as a private affair with God
without any connection to those people around us. The God Incarnate, whom we adore,
specifically reminded us in the Gospel today that we can only love if we keep his word. His
“word” or teaching has a context—it has a tradition; it isn’t a matter of personal opinion,
but of revealed truths.
In any kind of endeavor, especially when it comes to important offices and
responsibilities, we place huge regard on the value of credibility and accountability. We see
this, for example, with people holding public office. If they lie or have done something that
tarnish’s their office, one would hear a clamor for resignation. The point is: credibility and
accountability are important values that we hold highly. The same seriousness and
accountability should be applied to our spiritual life. It is our witnessing to faith, our
seriousness to live the Gospel values, even in the midst of opposition and inconvenience,
that makes faith truly alive and strong. In my practice of faith, what is the most valuable
thing for me? Does the Gospel inform my important decisions in life? What is the role of
my faith in my moral decisions? Ultimately, the litmus test, if we are indeed keeping the
word of God, meaning we are loving genuinely, is if we are transformed by the faith that we
embrace and become agents of transformation as well. Would it be easy, would it be
perfect? Of course not. But, we trust in the promise of Christ to the disciples: “The
Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you
everything and remind you of all that I told you.” We have received this same Spirit by
virtue of our baptism and more vividly in the sacrament of confirmation, but the Spirit
needs our collaboration, because we can only remain in God and abide in him if we do it
freely, consciously and joyfully. How good are we in keeping God’s word? - Fr. Cary

VISITING THE SICK/HOMEBOUND, or as we at St. Cecilia call it , Communion Visitor, is one of the oldest ministries in the Church. From the earliest days of home services, the "ministers" would take the Blessed Bread to those unable to attend. It continued as a practice when church buildings were built. The tradition continued with Deacons who would visit with food and the Eucharist. Our Church today recognizes this ministry as one of its most important. The "Extra-ordinary Minister to the Sick" is the Face of the Parish, the living witness that the community of faith and worship has not forgotten the absent sick, the invisible elderly or the unseen sufferers. During Lent, we dig deep into our hearts to find new ways to love and serve the Lord through service and prayer. Do you have 1 extra hour a week to share, to give that service, with companionship and faith to a fellow parishioner. We need one-on-one home visitors, care center Communion service leaders, and team members for group visitation. 10:45AM MASS CHOIR
I am very pleased to announce that we have hired a new Music Director for our 10:45AM Mass. Her name is Lourdes Johanson. Lourdes holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance. She also finished a Master of Music in Music Theory from the Indiana University School of Music, Bloomington, Indiana. She started her piano studies at 3 years old, and all throughout childhood and her young adult years, piano performance was the driving force in her life. Lourdes has an extensive experience in music. She was the Director of Music Ministry and Liturgy Coordinator at St. Paul Catholic Newman Center at the Indiana University. Lourdes met her husband, Michael (a composer), while both were graduate students at IU. They were married in 2000 and their son, Ethan, was born in 2002. They moved out west in 2004 when Michael accepted a teaching position at Lewis & Clark College. The Johanson’s are members of St. Clare Parish in SW Portland where Lourdes served as Choir Director from 2005-2011. She resigned from active ministry to spend more time with her family especially during her son’s formative years. However, she continues to direct the children and youth choirs for the monthly parish Family and Youth Masses. She is also the song leader and accompanist at one of the Masses at St. Francis in Sherwood. Lourdes also maintains a private piano studio at home. I would like to invite EVERYONE who is interested to be part of our 10:45am choir. Practices are on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30pm in the church. May the good Lord who has begun the work in us bring it to completion.
STATES PASS PRO-LIFE LAWS!!! Missouri State passed a ban on abortion after 8 weeks! Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed into law a
statewide ban on abortion in nearly all cases! And, Georgia approved a new law protecting unborn children
after a heartbeat can be detected. Both North and South Dakota’s have passed pro-life bills!
The Supreme Court is on notice!
The pro-life movement has been laying the groundwork to overturn Roe v. Wade for decades. From the faithful
unsung heroes praying every day, to hard fought legal and political victories… to the recent triumphs in
confirming pro-life judges on our courts.
Because of our work, public opinion has been steadily moving in the pro-life direction. Today, a majority of
women call themselves pro-life!
These state legislative victories send an unmistakable message to the Supreme Court: the American public is
fighting for life. The ACLU and Planned Parenthood will inevitably sue to stop these laws, and we expect a
federal judge to block these laws in the short term. Those decisions will then be appealed, while other states
enter the fray.
The Supreme Court will eventually have to decide what to do -- and most importantly -- which case is the best
fit to unwind the catastrophic Roe decision. The Court may refuse to hear one or more of these appeals,
preferring to wait for the best case possible to affirm the right of states to once again protect women and
children from the barbaric practice of abortion.
Many people are asking: Does this mean Roe v. Wade will be overturned soon? Nobody can predict the future.
But here’s what we do know:
Roe v. Wade is a bad law. Many left-leaning legal scholars even agree. But, Roe has been upheld by the
Supreme Court in several decisions, most especially in the 1992 case of Planned Parenthood v. Casey. In that
decision, the court ruled that women’s “liberty” justified keeping abortion legal, up to a point.
Overturning Roe will likely require a case (or several cases) that address not only the humanity of the unborn
child, but also the Court’s argument in Casey that women today rely on abortion.
The brush fire has been lit —be it the laws from Alabama, Missouri, Georgia or another case. The national
debate over abortion is ablaze. Everyday citizens are speaking out. The Courts are taking notice. And, the
public is being prepared for the day when Roe v. Wade is finally wiped off the books.
This is cause for celebration. Double your prayers. We’re getting close.
Tuesday, May 28th, Oregon Right to Life is holding a lobby day at the state capitol to bring attention to this
issue. We will be going to every legislator's office to ask them to vote YES on the
Born-Alive Infants Protection Act in Oregon.
We will be at the capitol from 9:00 am to noon. Please come for as long as you are able. Staff will be available
in Hearing Room 50 the whole morning to provide instructions and direct you where to go. Wear a
pro-life t-shirt if you have one. Check ORTL website for more information.

St. Cecilia School “News”
In the third grade we are learning about the history of Portland. We went on a field trip to downtown Portland for the Portland Walking Tour. On the Portland Walking Tour, we got to see the Pioneer Courthouse Square. It was the first place we visited. We also got to see the Umbrella Man. Our tour guide told us some fun facts about the Umbrella Man. One of those facts was that he represents transportation. The Umbrella Man also represents the rain we get in Oregon. We also got to see how Portlandia was made. We didn’t get to see her because she is under repair. We did, however, learn some important facts about her. One of those facts is that Portlandia is the second largest statue in the country. We then headed to see Chapman Park and Lawnsdale Park. There is a statue of an elk between the two parks. The elk looks out of place because it is facing the wrong direction, and it is too skinny with antlers that are too big for its head. The tour had a lot of fun facts. I had a lot of fun seeing all of the things we are learning about in class. Our next adventure will be to the Pittock Mansion to learn more about Henry and Georgiana Pittock.

EN EL AMOR Y LA OBEDIENCIA LO TENEMOS TODO La lectura del evangelio de la Misa, tomada de San Juan, sitúa el centro y el fundamento de las enseñanzas de Jesús (y, por lo tanto, de Dios Padre), en amar y obedecer lo que nos manda: muy sencillo, muy claro. ¿Queremos amar a Dios permanecer en Su gracia y su amistad? Si es ese mi deseo (y espero que lo sea para todos nosotros), debo HACER TODO para cumplir lo que Jesús nos enseña de cómo se debe comportar un discípulo suyo. Escucho (o leo) atentamente lo que Él indica, lo trato de entender muy bien, y después lo pongo en práctica en mi relación con los demás, comenzando con mi propia familia y personas cercanas. Y lo hago, NO porque ellos también lo están haciendo (porque a menudo este no es el caso) sino porque quiero amar a Dios por sobre todas las cosas. Punto. Último punto del pasaje del evangelio: El Espíritu Santo nos ayudará a vivir en ese amor cada vez más, si se lo pedimos de todo corazón. Aleluya.
APOCALIPSIS: MENSAJE DE GRAN ESPERANZA El libro del Apocalipsis (o Revelación) de San Juan tiene una reputación se ser uno de los libros más difíciles de interpretar del nuevo testamento. Tanto su estilo, como sus imágenes y sus frecuentes alusiones al antiguo testamento, hacen necesario leerlo con paciencia y cuidado, preferiblemente con un buen comentario al lado. Durante este tiempo de Pascua en nuestra liturgia, es siempre la segunda lectura. Su mensaje esta siempre cargado de esperanza y consuelo, precisamente porque se escribe en tiempos (y PARA tiempos) difíciles donde hay mucha persecución contra la Iglesia por parte del mundo, y donde se nos anima a perseverar, constantes en la fe, la oración, y el testimonio a Cristo Resucitado. Y ciertamente es muy apropiado para NUESTROS tiempos de hoy, donde todos, y
especialmente la juventud, se siente marginada por tantos valores vacíos y materialistas
en la cultura dominante de consumo.

RECEMOS POR NUESTROS LÍDERES POLÍTICOS El cargo y la responsabilidad que tienen nuestros líderes políticos, tanto en Washington como en Salem, son enormes. Las presiones y las tentaciones que enfrentan diariamente son muy fuertes, y serían un desafío incluso si fueran santos (de lo cual la gran mayoría están muy, muy lejos); junto con eso, las complejidades de muchos asuntos sobre los que deben tomar decisiones requieren MUCHA INTEGRIDAD Y PACIENCIA para entender y evaluar. Es muy difícil hacer un trabajo bueno, particularmente en el clima político que hoy prevalece. Nuestros representantes merecen y necesitan de nuestras oraciones todo el tiempo, como nos lo recuerda San Pablo. No los olvidemos.

Será semana por medio, y durante los meses de julio y agosto. Durante este tiempo, el uso del Centro Parroquial para otros grupos o actividades se tendrá que suspender. Because there arose no little dissension and debate by Paul and Barnabas with them, it was decided that Paul, Barnabas, and some of the others should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders about this question. The apostles and elders, in agreement with the whole church, decided to choose representatives and to send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. The ones chosen were Judas, who was called Barsabbas, and Silas, leaders among the brothers. This is the letter delivered by them: "The apostles and the elders, your brothers, to the brothers in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia of Gentile origin: greetings. En aquellos días, vinieron de Judea a Antioquía algunos discípulos y se pusieron a enseñar a los hermanos que si no se circuncidaban conforme a la ley de Moisés, no podrían salvarse. Esto provocó un altercado y una violenta discusión con Pablo y Bernabé; al fin se decidió que Pablo, Bernabé y algunos más fueran a Jerusalén para tratar el asunto con los apóstoles y los presbíteros. Los apóstoles y los presbíteros, de acuerdo con toda la comunidad cristiana, juzgaron oportuno elegir a algunos de entre ellos y enviarlos a Antioquía con Pablo y Bernabé. ¡Oh Dios, que te alaben los pueblos, que todos los pueblos te alaben!
SEGUNDA LECTURA ~ APOC 21, 10-14. 22-23
Un ángel me transportó en espíritu a una montaña elevada, y me mostró a Jerusalén, la ciudad santa, que descendía del cielo, resplandeciente con la gloria de Dios. Su fulgor era semejante al de una piedra preciosa, como el de un diamante cristalino. Tenía una muralla ancha y elevada, con doce puertas monumentales, y sobre ellas, doce ángeles y doce nombres escritos, los nombres de las doce tribus de Israel. Tres de estas puertas daban al oriente, tres al norte, tres al sur y tres al poniente. La muralla descansaba sobre doce cimientos, en los que estaban escritos los doce nombres de los apóstoles del Cordero. No vi ningún templo en la ciudad, porque el Señor Dios todopoderoso y el Cordero son el templo. No necesita la luz del sol o de la luna, porque la gloria de Dios la ilumina y el Cordero es su lumbrera.
EVANGELIO ~ JUAN 14, 23-29
En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: "El que me ama, cumplirá mi palabra y mi Padre lo amará y vendremos a él y haremos en él nuestra morada. El que no me ama no cumplirá mis palabras. La palabra que están oyendo no es mía, sino del Padre, que me envió. Les he hablado de esto ahora que estoy con ustedes; pero el Paráclito, el Espíritu Santo que mi Padre les enviará en mi nombre, les enseñará todas las cosas y les recordará todo cuanto yo les he dicho. La paz les dejo, mi paz les doy. No se la doy como la da el mundo. No pierdan la paz ni se acobarden. Me han oído decir: 'Me voy, pero volveré a su lado'. Si me amaran, se alegrarían de que me vaya al Padre, porque el Padre es más que yo. Se lo he dicho ahora, antes de que suceda, para que cuando suceda, crean".
ORACIÓN A SAN MIGUEL ARCÁNGEL
San Miguel Arcángel, defiéndenos en la batalla. Sé nuestro amparo contra las perversidades y asechanzas del demonio. Reprímale Dios, pedimos suplicantes, y tú, príncipe de la milicia celestial, arroja al infierno con el divino poder a Satanás y a los otros espíritus malignos que andan dispersos por el mundo para la perdición de las almas. AMEN.
