We celebrate this mission daily in prayer, liturgy, sacraments and life. Dear Parishioners, Last week I spoke of the value of order and consistency in the Eucharist. Our worship is not something we create or own, but a divine action which the Church stewards. The order and consistency found in liturgical texts and instructions facilitate the “fully conscious and active participation in liturgical celebrations” of all the faithful who gather. To participate fully, it helps to know what one is expected to say and do. The concept of full and active participation of all the faithful in the Mass is at the heart of the reform of the liturgy introduced by the Second Vatican Council. The council documents on the Sacred Liturgy state: “In the restoration and promotion of the sacred liturgy, this full and active participation by all the people is the aim to be considered before all else…” For those who remember the Mass before the reforms, the primary active participants were the celebrant, altar server and choir. The reforms called for all to participate aloud in prayer, song, posture and gesture. The reforms also expanded the opportunities for the laity to be involved in special liturgical ministries. This full and active participation requires preparation. While we recognize the importance of the preparation of readers and musicians and celebrant, we sometimes forget the equal preparation of all who gather. The Council liturgy document addressed the disposition of the faithful that precedes this participation. “But in order that the liturgy may be able to produce its full effects, it is necessary that the faithful come to it with proper dispositions, that their minds should be attuned to their voices, and that they should cooperate with divine grace lest they receive it in vain.” The importance of what happens before the Mass as the faithful gather is behind the instruction provided in the Missal: Even before the celebration itself, it is a praiseworthy practice for silence to be observed in the church…so that all may dispose themselves to carry out the sacred celebration in a devout and fitting manner.Next week, what do we do with the silence? Yours in Christ,

MISSION STATEMENT: As part of the living Body of Christ, Saint Cecilia parish on Bainbridge Island seeks to conform to the will of God through faith, works, teaching and stewardship of God’s creation as guided by the Holy Spirit, by the teachings of Christ, and the Grace of the Father. We celebrate this mission daily in prayer, liturgy, sacraments and life.

Dear Parishioners, Last week I spoke of the value of order and consistency in the

Eucharist. Our worship is not something we create or own, but a

divine action which the Church stewards. The order and

consistency found in liturgical texts and instructions facilitate the

“fully conscious and active participation in liturgical celebrations”

of all the faithful who gather. To participate fully, it helps to know

what one is expected to say and do.

The concept of full and active participation of all the faithful in

the Mass is at the heart of the reform of the liturgy introduced by

the Second Vatican Council. The council documents on the Sacred

Liturgy state: “In the restoration and promotion of the sacred

liturgy, this full and active participation by all the people is the aim

to be considered before all else…” For those who remember the

Mass before the reforms, the primary active participants were the

celebrant, altar server and choir. The reforms called for all to

participate aloud in prayer, song, posture and gesture. The reforms

also expanded the opportunities for the laity to be involved in

    special liturgical ministries.

This full and active participation requires preparation. While

we recognize the importance of the preparation of readers and

musicians and celebrant, we sometimes forget the equal

preparation of all who gather. The Council liturgy document

addressed the disposition of the faithful that precedes this

participation. “But in order that the liturgy may be able to produce

its full effects, it is necessary that the faithful come to it with

proper dispositions, that their minds should be attuned to their

voices, and that they should cooperate with divine grace lest they

receive it in vain.” The importance of what happens before the

Mass as the faithful gather is behind the instruction provided in the

Missal: “Even before the celebration itself, it is a praiseworthy

practice for silence to be observed in the church…so that all may

dispose themselves to carry out the sacred celebration in a devout

    and fitting manner.”

Next week, what do we do with the silence?

    MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT

    CURSILLO: “The Cursillo

    Movement is both a

    movement and a

    method”…the purpose of

    which is “to create small

    groups of Christians that will

    evangelize their

    environments with the

    gospel spirit” and to “help

persons live what is fundamental for being a Christian

by committing themselves…to grow in holiness,

formation and evangelization.” (The Pilgrim’s Guide).

Cursillo includes a weekend experience, which is a

focused series of exercises in specific areas about how

Christians live their faith. Following the weekend, a

Group Reunion of three to six friends meet each week

to share their enthusiastic faith in Jesus Christ.

Parishioners from Saint Cecilia’s who are active in

    Cursillo shared their experiences:

Bob Earhart: “Made in [The Trinity’s] image, we were

meant for relationships, not solitude. The ongoing

relationships of Cursillo have brought us together in

Christ’s fold; there we find peace, security and joy with

our fellows. There we share our breakfast and our

lives, and make plans to bring Christ’s presence to the

    other sheep in His name.”

Bob Kuebler: “We are all on this faith journey together,

and support one another in all areas of our lives. We

are able to discern the will of God more clearly as we

pray together. In this way we develop a closer

relationship to Jesus and one another and increase our

desire to bring Him to others through our actions.”

Len Beil: “I made my three-day Cursillo retreat in 1980

and it remains one of the highlight experiences of my

life! I have been meeting weekly with wonderful men

who have also made a Cursillo retreat for the past 35

years! The retreat and friends I made are very special

    to me!”

please contact Dick Abrams at (206) 842-5105.
