Benefit of support for Gianna Caccamo Scheduled for April 12, 2014, @ Bishop Dwenger, 4:00-9:00 p.m. Please see the flier included in this newsletter, as it explains the day’s events in greater detail. As Gianna is in the 4th grade, to help support the Benefit we are asking that Gianna’s classmates donate 2-liter bottles of soda pop to help with the day’s refreshments. Of course, anyone may make a contribution to the success of this event, whether it be soda, money, volunteering, or other helpful assistance. Thank you for you kindness and support of the Caccamo Family. In closing, I was talking with five young men at lunch time – they were 6th, 7th, and 8th graders – and I jokingly asked if I was sitting at the “cool” table, the “geek” table, the “nerd” table, or the “brainiac” table. I received smiles and a mix of answers – as I expected. After talking a bit about the silliness of the labels, I mentioned that for the most part, our school culture at St. Charles does not look down on students who perform well academically. Working hard and getting good grades is an accepted part of the culture. The boys agreed. From our discussion, I posed the question, “If we did away with Honor Roll, would you work less and let your grades fall, or would you pay just as much attention to getting good grades?” All of the boys agreed they would still work to get good grades. I posed a second question, “Is the Honor Roll more important to you or to your parents?” They all agreed that Honor Roll is more important to their parents, not so much to them. As one 8th grade boy succinctly put it, “I want to get good grades. I care about getting good grades. My mom cares about me making the Honor Roll.” I bring this up because when I attended St. Charles we did not have Honor Roll and students still performed as they do today. Grades were important to most students and parents, and not as important for some. As adults, we can all still remember who excelled in class and who struggled. That being said, I do not believe Honor Roll is a big motivator for students, but more for parents. I know most parents would expect their children to get good grades with or without an Honor Roll. However, this need to promote, extol, or simply publicly affirm, has become part of our culture. I also shared with the boys that this practice has also become part of some of our sports teams. Some teams name “MVPs”, or “Mr. Hustle”, or the dreaded “Most Improved”, after each season. We laughed because no one wants to be named “Most Improved” as often the adults do not see that for kids it means you must have been playing really badly at the beginning of the year, but now you are not so awful. Personally, as a coach and a parent, I have never been into giving individual awards for team sports. Doing so does not build teamwork. The best teams I have ever played on, played for the love of the game and for one another as a team. Also, as a principal and a parent, I am not sure we need an Honor Roll four times a year to motivate students. Those bumper stickers others promote certainly are not in line with the humility to which a Christian is supposed to strive. The students realize that the Honor Roll student will still be a high achiever, and that the MVP will still be the most valuable player with, or without the award. They know the guy who improved the most wasn’t motivated by the hope of an award at the end of the season. They know their parents would still be on their cases if poor grades came home, and would still be praising them when the good grades came home. Kids are smart and they are honest. Ask your children how they feel about Honor Roll and ask them how they feel about individual awards on team sports. Ask them if either builds a feeling of teamwork, appreciation, self-worth, or higher self-expectation. And so, I pose the question to all of the adults, “Do we really need these sometimes over-the-top accolades, or are good report cards and game performances, along with words of sincere praise from adults and peers, all that kids need, to feel satisfied with who they are and the effort they are giving?” Lastly, I don’t think Jesus would have been an Honor Roll proponent. He certainly wouldn’t have named MVPs among his followers, or called out the most improved sinner among the group. I would conclude that Jesus was the greatest of teachers, would have made a terrific principal, and hands down would have been a fabulous coach. Lent is a time of reflection, prayer, and coming closer to God. It has been my pleasure to share some topics for your reflection and prayer. Hopefully, we will all come a little closer to God as our journey continues. Thank you – Rob S. Rumpelstiltskin Is My Name 2014 Spring Musical Our musical is presented this evening at 7:00 p.m. in the gym. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for students. All athletes (those who play school sports) are asked to help out with the donation of a dessert. We need cookies, cakes, brownies, cupcakes, Rice Krispie treats, or other delicious desserts. ALL donations can be dropped off on Friday, March 21st. Volunteers will be outside the cafeteria doors to collect the goodies at morning drop-off and at afternoon pick-up. In addition, volunteers will be working after lunch in the kitchen if you wish to drop off a dessert earlier in the afternoon. Your help is greatly appreciated.

SCRIP How Lucky Are You? – It will take a little more than luck to win one of the SIX “POTS OF GOLD” that SCRIP is giving away to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day – but not much. All it takes is an order of at least $100 for your chance to win. Each prize will contain a gift card valued at $25-$100. But you can’t win if you don’t enter. You can place an order during the weekend sales and again on Monday. The winners will be drawn following Monday sales. Spring Break – Even though it seems that winter just won’t go away, Spring Break will be here soon; it is just two weeks away! SCRIP sales will take place on Thursday, March 27 but not again until Saturday, April 5. Be sure to plan ahead and stock up on SCRIP for all your gas and grocery needs as well as gift cards for dining, entertainment and shopping. Special Orders – Don’t forget that there are many merchants available through SCRIP that are not listed on our order form. This is usually because they do not have a presence in our community; but, if you are traveling or have out-of-town family that you like to gift something in their local, special orders can be just the answer. We place or Great Lakes orders on Monday mornings and the items are ready for delivery by the following Thursday. Here are a few tips to help: 1) Check out available merchants at glscrip.com. 2) Be sure to zoom in to see the details on usage and limitations on the back of the card. Some merchants have a limit on how

many gift cards can be used in an on-line transaction. Special order items cannot be returned. 3) Write the special order item in the space provided on the backside of the order form. 4) Pay for special order items at the time they are ordered. 5) Be sure to place the order no later than Monday mornings at 9AM and indicate how you plan to receive your order –

delivered with a student, picked up at the Parish Office, or picked up at the SCRIP sales table. This makes it possible to earn SCRIP credit even from merchants not in our local area. VOLUNTEERS: Classroom Delivery volunteers, please note that you should plan on arriving to deliver the orders to the classrooms 30 minutes prior to dismissal. Please adjust your schedule if you are scheduled to deliver the orders during March while we are still in making up snow days. It also appears that I failed to schedule a delivery person for Thursday, March 27. Please contact the SCRIP office if you are able to deliver orders on that day. CONGRATULATION GABRIELLE KIEN The Northeast Indiana Disability Action Coalition held an essay contest in schools in northeast Indiana with the topic "My Experience with the R-Word". Only three winners were honored and awarded an i-Pad mini at the event on Saturday. Congratulations to Gabrielle Kien in grade 4 for writing such an inspiring essay! She learned about the contest after visiting Turnstone with her fourth grade class. We are so proud of her! IREAD-3 Indiana Public Law 109 requires the evaluation of reading skills for students who are in third grade. The inten of PL109 is to ensure every student has the opportunity for future success through literacy. Research has shown that prior to third grade, students are primarily ‘learning to read’. However, beginning in fourth grade, students must be able to ‘read to learn’. Standards and materials are more complex from fourth grade forward, and students who cannot read proficiently will struggle to attain reading skills while trying to master more advanced content. By the end of third grade, students are expected to be able to read independently. This means that they can read and understand grade level materials, words, sentences, and paragraphs without help. The purpose of Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD-3) assessment is to measure foundational reading standards through grade three. Based on the Indiana Academic Standards, IREAD-3 is a summative assessment that was developed in accordance with Public Law 109 which “requires the evaluation of reading skills for students who are in grade three beginning in the Spring of 2012 to ensure that all students can read proficiently before moving on to grade four.” Pass students demonstrate proficient understanding when reading and responding to grade-level literary and informational texts. Did Not Pass students demonstrate limited understanding when reading and responding to grade-level literary and informational text. More information is available at http://www.doe.in.gov/achievement/assessment/iread. Third grade students take this in addition to ISTEP+. Our third graders will take this required assessment on March 17-18-19. It a student does not pass this, there will be an opportunity for remediation and then to be re-rested once during the summer. If a student is absent and unable to complete the three-part test by March 21, then s/he will take the re-test during the summer. Students are required to pass this before they may move on to fourth grade. JOIN GIRLS ON THE RUN OF ALLEN COUNTY! This is the last weekend to register for the spring 2014 season! Each March, “Read Across America” is observed in schools across the nation to celebrate both literacy and the many works of Dr. Seuss. Last week, our second graders enjoyed an afternoon of reading and related activities. The event ran smoothly thanks to the forty volunteers on hand! We are so grateful to them for coming to share the day and to the many parents that sent needed supplies. Special thanks go out to Classic Graphics (482-3487) on East State Blvd; this is Mr. David Meier’s seventh year of donating printing services so that the children can do a special project! Thanks to Mrs. Katie Steigmeyer for taking dozens of photos and donating the processing so that each child can take home a picture with the Cat in the Hat. Thanks to our awesome second grade teachers for getting in the spirit and dressing as Seuss-i-cal characters. Thanks to Mrs. Kelly Wolf for the helium balloons that really brightened our space. It was a special afternoon that the students will remember as a highlight of their time at Saint Charles, and we are truly grateful for the support of all involved. -Mrs. Martha Berghoff Enrichment Coordinator ST. Help for Haiti - Pencil Collection for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Orphanage - March 17-27 When Father Andre Sylvester of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Orphanage in Haiti was asked “How can a kid like me help the kids in your orphanage?”, he answered “Pencils.” That was the beginning of a partnership between the St. Charles 3rd grade Brownie Troop and the University of St. Francis student group Formula for Life to develop a service project called Help for Haiti. From March 17 through March 27, all students are asked to bring in new pencils, erasers and manual pencil sharpeners to donate. Drop boxes will be available near the display cases and near the office. Donated items will be delivered by University of St. Francis students when they visit the Orphanage in May. It is hard to comprehend that something as simple as a pencil can make such a difference in the lives of these children. Imagine the impact we can make during this Lenten season if every student could contribute even one pencil. Formula for Life has been working with Fr. Andre and the 27 children in the orphanage at Our Lady of Perpetual Help for over seven years. In the first few years, they worked to provide formula and other nutritional support. When they saw the need grow, they stepped up their efforts and over the past year have raised more than $100,000 in money and supplies to build a new orphanage. The enlarged orphanage will include a residence, a school and a chapel where at least 100 orphans will be cared for and educated. Construction is in progress and more funds will be raised through the 6th annual Formula for Life 5K run/walk scheduled for April 13, 2014. For more information about Formula for Life or the 5K run/walk, visit their web page at www.sf.edu/sf/biology/formula-for-life or contact Dr. Amy Obringer at [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your support and generosity.
