This Sunday is named Gaudete Sunday, the Latin word for “rejoice”. You will have noticed that we began our Mass to- day by singing the Introit for the day: “Rejoice in the Lord Always”. We have many traditions to help us rejoice and to prepare for the coming of Jesus at Christmas. As we learned on the First Week of Advent, we have begun a new liturgical year. Our Advent Wreath helps us to remember the passing of time and the lighting of the world by Jesus as “Christ the Light”. It is a time of anticipation and hope; of remembrance and repentance; and most importantly, of preparation. One great tradition is Simbang Gabi (or ‘Night Mass’). This is a 9-day series of Masses celebrated in anticipation of Christmas and in honor of the Virgin Mary. Traditionally, the Novena Masses are celebrated for the nine days before Christmas. Here at St. Edward we celebrate our Simbang Gabi Masses at 5 am each day on the16th-24th. Now, we realize that not everyone is such an early bird! So, in order to give us more opportunities to prepare spiritually for the coming of Jesus, we will be offering a “Triduum” of Masses at 7:30 pm, December 21st, 22nd & 23rd. This is a busy season for us all. We rush to buy and wrap gifts, set up our Christmas trees, send out cards, schedule meals and family visits, and all of these things can some- times take our focus off of the true reason for the season: the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. As we begin our new liturgical year, look forward to the new calendar year, and come together as a country under our new leadership, we invite you to take some time out and take advantage of the many opportunities here at St. Edward to join in prayer with the faithful of our community and to show our faith in the Lord that He will grant us a peaceful and graced “new” life. New and Old Parishioners It is important to be registered in your parish to complete your Sacraments, or to be sponsors or Godparents in our church and other churches. Call the office to find out if you are still registered, because during October 2015 we up-dated our Census and we inactivated 4,000 families who did not check in. ARE YOU one of those? It is never late, please call us and we will reactivate your information if you still coming to Mass at St. Edward.

Today’s Readings First Reading — The barren deserts will rejoice and flower. Tired bodies will receive strength. Aching hearts will be made glad (Isaiah 35:1-6a, 10). Psalm — Lord, come and save us (Psalm 146). Second Reading — Be patient, for the coming of the Lord is as sure as the rain (James 5:7-10). Gospel — Tell of what you hear and see: The blind re-gain their vision, the crippled their movement, the deaf their hearing (Matthew 11:2-11).

Nativity Festival News Thank you very much for making our Second Annual Nativity Festival a success. We received wonderful, positive feedback from our parishioners who came to the hall to view the exhibit. We thank our parishioners who shared their collection and displayed their nativity sets at the festival. We also want to express our deepest appreciation to our volunteers. We are especially grateful for the generosity of our parishioners. Because of your giving spirit, we were able to raise over $300 for “Babu’s Tots.” We look forward to the next festival in December 2017!

Congratulations We pray for our newly baptized members of St. Edward Community:

Hospitality Sunday December 11

Please join us after the 7:15, 8:30, and 10:00 a.m. Masses for free coffee and donuts in the parish hall. Do remember, this is not just an opportunity for a free donut and go. It is meant to be a time to meet and mix with some parishioners that you do not yet know. Thank you to our Hospitality Committee for all their faithful service and the Men’s Club who donates the donuts every month.

Respect Life Quote “A child is loved because he is one’s child: not because he is beautiful, or because he is like this or like that… Not because he thinks as I do, or embodies my dreams. A child is a child: a life generated by us but intended for him, for his good, for the good of the family, of society, of mankind as a whole.” – Pope Francis, General Audience, February 11, 2015. ©2015 Libreria Editrice Vaticana. Aging religious need your help. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests have offered their lives in service to others—educating the young, comforting the sick, seeking justice for the oppressed. Today, many are frail, elderly, and in need of assis-tance. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to furnish medications, nursing care, and other necessities. Please give generously to today’s second collection. To learn more, visit www.retiredreligious.org.
