TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME—SEPTEMBER 16, 2018

From the Desk of Rev. Scott Holmer Peter in the Gospel this weekend is rebuked by Jesus for not thinking as God does but thinking as human beings do. Jesus even calls Peter "Satan" for thinking as human beings do. Remarkably, as Christians, we are called not to think as human beings do but as God does. So how are we human

beings supposed to be able to think like God? Peter, thinking as a human being, was hoping that since Jesus was the Messiah, Jesus would receive a great deal of power, wealth, pleasure and prestige. This would mean that Jesus was successful according to the way we human beings think. However, Jesus tells us that He will be rejected, humiliated and crucified. If we thought as God thinks, we would look upon the cross as our symbol of success. Today, we still worry about losing our power, wealth, pleasure and prestige. We fear being shamed, rejected and humiliated. In the way that human beings think, Jesus appears to be a loser - for on the Cross He has lost everything. And if Christians continue to think as human beings think, if we constantly chase power, wealth, pleasure and prestige, we will despair. Instead, as Christians, we must think as God does. And if we want to think as God does, we must reject the way human beings think. We must reject our human way of thinking driven by desires for power, wealth, pleasure and popularity. And if we lose everything, as Christ lost everything, we discover that finally there is nothing left to separate us from God. And we, like Christ, will finally be able to commend our spirit freely into our Father's hands. God Bless, Fr. Scott
