Bereavement Ministry

Guide me through these dark days O Lord;

I am torn up with grief. I know you are there,

but I cannot see past my sorrow and tears. Be with me, Lord,

and do not take my unhappiness to heart.

Rather, work within me to guide me through these dark days

and bring your light to my life, so that I may see your goodness,

even in my mourning

Amen

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 4 January 24, 2016

“Calling on the Roman Catholic faithful to gaze even more a en vely on mercy so that we may become a more effec ve sign of the Father’s ac on(MV,3), Pope Francis declared an Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy to begin on December 8, 2015, the 50th Anniversary of the Second Va can Council.” We would like to share the 5 page le er from Bishop Most Reverend Gerald R. Barnes concerning the Year of Mercy. Due to the size of the le er, we will share it in a series of excerpts from the le er each week.

We are called Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us

that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved.

Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Ma hew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep a er his

betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gi of God!”

You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and

glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel

sought a er, loved, and forgiven by God.

Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anoin ng, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor,

proclaim liberty to cap ves and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.

We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, You who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.

Amen.

LIVING AS THE BODY OF CHRIST Some of Saint Paul’s best known and most beloved imagery is contained in the passages from First Corinthians that we have heard last week and this week: the many gifts granted by the one same Spirit and the many members making up the one Body of Christ. Few passages from sacred scripture more accurately sum up how Christian vocations work together.

Unlike some of Paul’s other writings, which are a product of the social and religious conventions of his time, these enable us to look at our own lives and the lives of those around us to discern what gifts, what vocations the Holy Spirit has given for the good of all. We can likewise know the joys and sorrows of the other members of the Body and share in them for the strengthening of the whole Body of Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
