St. Francis parish is inviting all newly baptized babies and their families to the 12 Noon Mass on Sunday, January 12th. Parents will have the opportunity to see all the “little ones” who have been baptized over the last year. Parents will also receive a special blessing asking God to assist them in raising their child in the Catholic faith. A small reception will follow.

The Call to Holiness in Today’s World VI Now we reach the sixth reflection on the eight Beatitudes by Pope Francis from his Apostolic Exhortation called Gaudete et Exsultate. The Pope reiterates the importance of a heart that true and authentic, not pretentious, impure or fake as we strive to become more like Christ. “’Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God’ This Beatitude speaks of those whose hearts are simple, pure and undefiled, for a heart capable of love admits nothing that might harm, weaken or endanger that love. The Bible uses the heart to describe our real intentions, the things we truly seek and desire, apart from all appearances. ‘Man sees the appearance, but the Lord looks into the heart’ (1Sam 16:7). God wants to speak to our hearts (cf. Hos 2:16); there he desires to write his law (cf. Jer 31:33). In a word, he wants to give us a new heart (cf. Ezek 36:26). ‘Guard your heart with all vigilance’ (Prov 4:23). Nothing stained by falsehood has any real worth in the Lord’s eyes. He ‘flees from deceit and rises and departs from foolish thoughts’ (Wis 1:5). The Father, ‘who sees in secret’ (Mt 6:6), recognizes what is impure and insincere, mere display or appearance, as does the Son, who knows ‘what is in man’ (cf. Jn 2:25). Certainly, there can be no love without works of love, but this Beatitude reminds us that the Lord expects a commitment to our brothers and sisters that comes from the heart. For ‘if I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have no love, I gain nothing’ (1 Cor 13:3). In Matthew’s Gospel too, we see that what proceeds from the heart is what defiles a person (cf. 15:18), for from the heart come murder, theft, false witness, and other evil deeds (cf. 15:19). From the heart’s intentions come the desires and the deepest decisions that determine our actions. A heart that loves God and neighbor (cf. Mt 22:36-40), genuinely and not merely in words, is a pure heart; it can see God. In his hymn to charity, Saint Paul says that ‘now we see in a mirror, dimly’ (1 Cor 13:12), but to the extent that truth and love prevail, we will then be able to see ‘face to face.’ Jesus promises that those who are pure in heart ‘will see God.’ Keeping a heart free of all that tarnishes love: that is holiness.” (Gaudete et Exsultate, 83-86)

St. Francis of Assisi Parish is kicking off our 3rd Annual Car Raffle!!
The lucky winner will have the choice of a brand new, redesigned 2020 Audi Q3 or $25,000 cash. (The MSRP on the Q3 is $38,070).
The drawing will be held on Sunday, February 9, 2020.
The proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to paint the church.

The Sisters of Life to visit St. Francis
The Sisters of Life will be speaking at the Holy Masses celebrated here at St. Francis on January 10th & 11th, in commemoration of the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade in our country on January 22nd, sharing with parishioners the charism of life given by the Holy Spirit to their community and the Church! The Sisters of Life are a contemplative/active religious community of women founded in 1991 by John Cardinal O’Connor for the protection and enhancement of the sacredness of every human life.
We look forward to welcoming them to our parish!
Dear Parishioners,
I hope that you had a wonderful Christmas and that you were able to spend time with family and friends. It is hard to believe that we are halfway through the Religious Education year. Our program continues to grow and we are thankful to our Lord for blessing St. Francis with so many faithful families. I would like to take a moment now to thank all of our Catechists who give their time with love and caring for each of our students. I would also like to thank Vicki Zugibe for the endless hours that she puts into our program.
We have had a great start to the year. Our students made cards that went to a group of soldiers preparing to deploy. They also collected 100 blessing bags for the warming center, raised $237 dollars for Sr. Cecilia’s Christmas stockings and made Christmas Cards for wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army Hospital. Our catechists have volunteered at the warming center and will continue to do so throughout the winter months. Our Advent Craft and Movie Night was a huge success! Many thanks to the family catechesis team and the 8th grade confirmation students. OH, and thank you Santa for your guest appearance. Our pageant was wonderful and a great way to begin the Christmas season with peace and joy in our hearts. We have many things planned over the next few months; please support our youth whenever you can.
May your New Year be filled with the Peace and Joy of the newborn Christ Child, and may God continue to bless you, your family and the Parish of St. Francis.

Here are five tax saving ideas that can be used by most taxpayers before the end of the year. It is provided by one of our parishioners, Tom Braun, who is an accountant and posted this on LinkedIn.
1. Make late-year charitable donations. Consider making donations with appreciated stock you have owned over one year.
You can typically receive the higher value donation without paying capital gain taxes. Also consider non-cash donations of items in good or better condition. But pay attention to your total deductions. With higher standard deductions, you should use your charitable giving to ensure you can maximize your tax savings. This may mean making next year's donations this year!
2. Make contributions to your qualified retirement plans. Remember there is still time to make contributions to traditional IRAs, SEP IRAs and 401(k) accounts to reduce your taxable income this year. While you're at it, take a look at next year's limits and plan to increase your contributions to make next year's tax obligation even better than this year’s.
3. Take distributions from your retirement accounts. If you are over 70 1/2 years old, you will need to take required minimum distributions. The penalty for not taking minimum distributions is 50%. But if you are over 59 years old you should also be taking distributions from tax deferred accounts in the most tax efficient way possible. This may mean taking some money out, even it you do not quite need it now.
4. Take any final investment gains and losses. Capital losses can be used to net against your capital gains. You can also take up to $3,000 of capital losses in excess of capital gains each year and use it to lower your ordinary income.
5. Consider making any final gifts to dependents. You may provide gifts of up to $15,000 per year per person. Remember all gifts given (birthday, holiday and cash) count towards this total. This can provide a future source of possible investment income for your kids. While the "kiddie tax" may ultimately come into play, this can be avoided by using the gifts to fund a 529 college savings account.
With the new tax rules in place beginning in 2018, tax planning is more important than ever.
You still have time to lower your tax bill, but the clock is ticking.
