    Prayers for the Dead

Please remember Lilia Pineda and Lourdes Hidalgo in your prayers.

Singing at Mass This is the last Sunday we will be leaving the missalettes at the doors of the church. Whether you will be attending Masses with us or streamed online, we invite you to take a copy home with you for your own use. We will not keep them in the pews any longer or even elsewhere in the church after today. Singing may be more limited to refrains like the responsorial psalms do, and be more challenging singing through a mask! So please join in singing during the Mass as you are able, but sing at a reduced volume level to keep aerosol content for yourselves or others to a minimum! Thank you!

    Happy Father’s Day!

    Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

For those who were lucky enough to reserve a seat for one of our first weekend in church Masses after the Covid-19 closure, welcome back! We are so happy that you are with us and that we can celebrate together once again in our beloved St. John’s Church. The invitation now though is for you to allow other families to register in one of these next several weeks to allow them to have a first time again too before you register again. This way, perhaps over the course of a month, everyone who wishes will have had at least one chance to attend. If you know of friends or neighbors who are parishioners but do not use computers, perhaps you can help them in making their reservation. Please see pages 5 and 6 for a reminder of all the changes and procedures which we must follow to keep ourselves and others healthy and safe.

For the time being, no groups or devotions may take place in our parish. This is a combination of the limited places which can accommodate the safe distancing requirements and the challenge of having to disinfect a location after each use. We will work on a plan as time goes forward and we are all more accustomed to what each of the phases of gradual to full reopening require.

    Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols

Reflection on Today’s Scripture Readings. “Fear no one,” this week’s Gospel blithely reminds us (Matthew 10:26). Understood, but also easier said than done. “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul” (10:28). Okay, but we tend to grow attached to our bodies and hope to keep them a while longer. “[D]o not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” (10:31). But also one sparrow in the hand is worth two in the bush. We tend to go with what we have. The fact is that most of us are not Jeremiah, who said what he believed even to the point of alienating just about everyone around him. To be Jeremiah can sometimes be just too intimidating. In short, we like our bodies as well as our souls, and so we let our fears get in the way of being the Christians we wish to be. Nevertheless, every once in a while the Jeremiah strain in each of us does show itself. We speak up for what is right, realizing that if we do not, perhaps no one else will either. And so we say what must be said, maybe not shouting it from the housetops but at least from the porch of the spirit in which our soul dwells. And after we’ve done so, miracle of miracles, we realize we are no longer afraid.

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father.” MATTHEW 10:32

Would others know that you are Catholic by the way you act and speak? Do you share your Catholic faith with others? Do you defend your Catholic faith when the situation arises or do you remain silent? Do you pray in public before meals? Pray for the strength and courage to be a joyful witness of our Catholic faith when the opportunity presents itself. Let us become the radiant light and bold witness that we are called to be!
