Dear Parishioners, Friends, and Visitors to the Cathedral, The Saint whom we celebrate on April 5th, Vincent Ferrer, was born in Valencia, Spain, during the year 1357. He received a deep sense of piety from his parents, and took his religious duties and obligations of charity very seriously. At the age of 18, Vincent joined the Dominican Order (the Order of Preachers). He was a gifted student, and excelled in his studies of philosophy and the Fathers of the Church. Additionally, he was able to commit large portions of the Bible to memory. Vincent became renowned for his eloquence in preaching, and was also known to have the gift of prophesy. Even though Saint Vincent Ferrer endeavored to focus his life on the mission of the Dominican Order (the peaching of the Gospel), it was none-the-less difficult not to become embroiled in the political machinations of his day. In the late 1300’s, there were two men, both claiming to be the legitimate Pope, one in Rome and one in Avignon, and each of these men had strong allegiances (as well as armies) backing them. Vincent tried to persuade the Avignon claimant to negotiate an end to the schism. As a man of deep prayer and conviction in faith, he acted with great dedication to advance the spread of the Gospel. Vincent committed himself to missionary work, and was resolved to preach in every town between Avignon and his hometown in Spain. With great passion, he denounced greed, blasphemy, sexual immorality, and popular disregard for the truths of faith. When he would preach, thousands would gather to hear him, and his oratory prompted dramatic conversions. His immense popularity, however, did not deter him from a life of asceticism and poverty. He abstained completely from meat, slept on a straw mat, consumed only bread and water on Wednesdays and Fridays, and accepted no donations for himself beyond what he needed to survive. He traveled with five other Dominican friars at all times, and the men would spend hours hearing confessions. For over twenty years, Saint Vincent and his group of friars undertook preaching missions in Spain, Italy, and France. When he traveled outside these regions, into Germany and other parts of the Mediterranean, those who did not know the languages in which he preached would testify that they had understood every word he said, in the same manner as the apostles experienced at Pentecost. Although he was not able to heal the temporary divisions within the Church, Vincent succeeded in strengthening large numbers of Christians in Europe in their Catholic faith. He died on April 5, 1419, at age 62, in the city of Vannes in France. He was canonized in 1455. May God convict each of us with the zeal that moved Vincent Ferrer to share the faith which defined his life and characterized his death with others.

The Divine Mercy Novena traditionally begins on Good Friday and continues through Divine Mercy Sunday (The Second Sunday of Easter). A picture of the Divine Mercy is on view in the Cathedral. Pamphlets with the Divine Mercy Novena and Chaplet will be available near the picture.

Easter Monday - The Rectory office will be closed on Easter Monday, April 2nd. There is no Centering Prayer that day. Masses and Confessions will be at the usual Monday times.

Cathedral Parking - Be assured that free parking is always available for those who come to worship at the

Cathedral on Saturdays and Sundays, even if the garage has rates posted for games or special events. However, it is very important that you get a validation sticker in the Cathedral before you leave. Thank you for your cooperation.

Been to Confession lately? - The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a healing remedy for our sinfulness. Confession, one part of the Sacrament, calls us to discover the struggles that cause sinful acts and present them to God in the presence of the priest. All Catholics should consider approaching this sacrament at least twice a year, especially during Advent and Lent. Although serious matters should be brought before the priest, our lesser sins are healed through the celebration of Mass or with sincere contrition and any good work.

Let Us Pray - You will find “Oremus” cards at the entrances of the Cathedral. Please use them to share your prayer needs, loved ones for whom you are praying, concerns that you hold in your heart. Write those prayer needs on the card and drop them in the collection basket. These will be collected and placed just inside the Resurrection Chapel near a vigil light. For four weeks, we will remember your intentions in our public liturgical intercessions. We ask you to add them to your personal prayer as well.

How Can I Become More Involved? - There are many ways for Catholics to get more involved in their faith and in the ministry of the Church. Those include liturgical ministries (choir member, lector, altar server, usher, or Eucharistic Minister), various parish ministries (social justice, RCIA, new member, & social activities), as well as volunteer roles as collection counters, holiday church decorators, etc. Please speak with a parish staff member to discern your gifts, your time, and your opportunities to serve.

Stewardship of the Earth - As Christians, we believe that the earth is entrusted to our faithful stewardship. We are not its owners, but its caretakers on behalf of God. How can I be a good steward?

How Can I Reduce Garbage? The mantra of recycling is Reduce, Re-use, Recycle. One way we can help the environment is to reduce the amount of waste we produce. This eliminates the need to recycle it and prevents it from ending up in a landfill. Here are some things you can do to reduce garbage:•Use a reusable lunch bag or box, youwon’t

need to throw away a paper bag every day!•Whenyoumakeapurchase, don’ttakeabag

unless you absolutely need one.•Rent things you use infrequently instead of

purchasing them.•Useclothinsteadofpapernapkins.•Useaspongeorclothinsteadofpapertowels.•Lookforitemsthatuselittleornopackaging.•Use reusable plastic containers for food

instead of plastic bags.•Use plates, cups, and utensils that can be

washed instead of ones you throw away.•Avoid buying foods in single serving

packages.

Serving the Poor in Our MidstEach day, numerous people come to the rectory office seeking assistance. Through your generosity, and with the assistance of the workers at the Bp. Cosgrove Center, we are able to fill some of their needs. Listed below is a report on the assistance the Cathedral has offered this past month, and on your generosity in support of these efforts.

A Community of Justice & Love

Please Bring in your CRS Rice Bowls! Encounter the Risen Christ: We prayed, fasted and gave alms—and now we celebrate Easter joy! Our Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl ends as we encounter our risen Lord. We reflect on our

brothers and sisters whom we have walked with in Iraq, Nicaragua, Burkina Faso, Haiti, and Malawi. And we commit to bring Easter joy to each person we meet in our daily lives. Visit <crsricebowl.org> for more information.Thank you to those who have returned their Rice Bowls. There is still time for a Rice Bowl contribution. Please count the money in your Rice Bowl and make a check payable to St. John Cathedral. Please write “CRS Rice Bowl” in the memo line of the check or give your filled Rice Bowl to an usher or to the rectory office.

Give Where It Helps - If anyone asks you for money outside the Cathedral, please refer them to the Street Cards available in the East 9th Street vestibule bookrack. This handy sheet lists meal sites, shelters for men and women, ways to get free legal counsel, low income housing, places to get free clothing and medical care, and a wide variety of services to help people with most any need. Please do not give them cash. A gift of cash would do more good if given to Catholic Charities, or other social service agencies who provide long term solutions to the problems of homelessness. In all circumstances, let us look kindly on those who are truly poor, as well as those who feel they need to ask for help, whatever the reason. Look them in the eyes with faith and love, smile, and offer a prayer. In justice, continue to press to eliminate the reasons we have the poor around us: low wages, expensive housing, and poor education.

The Social Action Ministry as well as the guests of Cosgrove extend a big thank you to all who supported the March Personal Items Collection for the Homeless. Your donations do so much to add dignity to the lives of those who live on the fringe. A particularly heartfelt thank you to the person(s) who donated 4 tote bags each containing 4 packing cubes, each filled to the brim with toiletries, clothes, and other necessities. In addition, your monetary donations for March were the largest we have received so far. We take the responsibility you have given us to use these funds where they will do the most good very seriously. We work closely with the Bishop Cosgrove Center when making these purchases and take their direction regarding their greatest needs. Thank you for being so awesome. The next collection will be on the 3rd weekend of the month, April 14th and 15th.

Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit.Priest: A reading from the Holy Gospel…

People: Glory to you, O Lord. The Gospel according to John 20:1-9

People: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

CreedI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(All bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; God’s love endures forever. So let the children of Israel say: God’s love endures forever more! The Lord’s right hand has triumph brought; and has raised me up. I shall not die but I shall live, singing of all God’s mighty deeds. The stone the builders would not use has now become the cornerstone. Such wonders are the work of the Lord; they are marvels in our sight.

Preparation of the Gifts Away with gloom & doubt – E. Shillito (1872-1948)/ B. Ferguson1. Away with gloom, away with doubt, with all the morning stars we sing; With all the people of God we shout the praises of a King, Alleluia, Alleluia, of our returning King.2. Away with death and welcome life, in him we died and live again: And welcome peace, away with strife, for he returns to reign, to reign. Alleluia, Alleluia, the Crucified shall reign.3. Then welcome beauty, he is fair; and welcome youth, for he is young; And welcome spring; and ev’rywhere let merry songs be sung, Alleluia, Alleluia, for such a King be sung.

Text: Jean Tisserand (d. 1494); trans John M. Neale (1818-1866). Tune: O FILII ET FILIAE

O sons and daughters of the King, whom heavenly hosts in glory sing, Today the grave has lost its sting. Alleluia! That Easter morn at break of day, the faithful women went their way to seek the tomb where Jesus lay. Alleluia! An angel clad in white they see, who sits and speaks unto the three: "Your Lord has gone to Galilee." Alleluia! That night the apostles met in fear; Among them came their master dear, And said, "My peace be with you here." Alleluia! When Thomas first the tidings heard that they had seen the risen Lord, He doubted the disciples' word. Alleluia!"My pierced side, O Thomas, see and look upon my hands, my feet: Not faithless but believing be." Alleluia! No longer Thomas then denied; He saw the feet, the hands, the side; "You are my Lord and God!" he cried. Alleluia! How blest are they who have not seen and yet whose faith has constant been, For they eternal life shall win. Alleluia! On this most holy day of days be laud and jubilee and praise: To God your hearts and voices raise. Alleluia!Choir: Haec dies (Ps 118) Ludovico daViadana (1564-1627)Haec dies, quam fecit Dominus: exultemus et laetemur in ea. Confitemini Domino quoniam bonus: quoniam in saeculum misericordia ejus. Pascha nostrum immolatus est Christus. This is the day which the Lord has made: rejoice and be glad in it. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good: his mercy endures forever. Christ our Paschal Lamb has been sacrificed. Alleluia!

Pray for Each Other - In your prayers, please remember those in need of healing and support, especially: Natalie Rose Hayek, Drusilla Allen, William Loar Jr., Betty Allen ` Mary Theresa Dias & Family ` Richard King, Pat Hesland ` Mary Pierce, Dan F. ` Sherry Brodock, Amy Sonoda ` Alice Mycan, Melanie Dansko Mille ` Kristen LaManna, Peggy LaManna

` Timothy Ferris ̀ Margaret Fadrowski, Joe Carnivale, ̀ Lisa Holzheimer Miheli, James R. Forristal, Tom Sonneborn ̀ Tim Prestel ̀ Jemia Sworski, Jim Nagle ` Frank Dimeo, Joel Rivera, Michele LaBella ` Mike Mannino ` Nancy Stinson, Robert & Jessica Bossone ` Andrew Hayek, John Sferry ` Viktor Bondik ` If you, or one of your family, would like to be included in this prayer list, please contact the Cathedral Office. After 30 days, please let the office know whether to retain the person on the prayer list.

Morning Prayer Groups - Please consider joining our weekly gatherings from 6:30-7:00 am in the Lower Sacristy of the Cathedral. Using the scriptures for the coming Sunday, these groups share their faith and some fellowship over a cup of coffee. The women’s group gathers on Tuesdays, and the men’s group on Fridays. Just show up at the Lower Sacristy, or contact the parish office with inquiries.

Centering Prayer is a spiritual practice of our Catholic contemplative tradition that opens us more deeply to a relationship with God in faith and intimacy. Our group meets on Monday evenings from 6:30-8:00 pm in the Lower Sacristy. Centering Prayer will not meet on Easter Monday, April 2.

Gluten Allergies and Communion - The Cathedral has purchased a supply of minimally glutinous altar breads which have been produced with an improved process that makes them virtually indistinguishable from ordinary Communion wafers. These hosts contain less than 37 micrograms of gluten, and

should be safe for members of the congregation who suffer from Celiac disease or other gluten allergies. If you are interested in receiving the low-gluten host for communion, please stop in at the Sacristy prior to Mass and speak to the celebrant. Individuals are advised to consult with their physician before receiving communion in this form.

Tying the Knot? - For baptized Catholics, marriage is a Sacrament that is best celebrated in the home church of the bride or the groom. For weddings at the Cathedral, a six-month minimum period of preparation is required. This preparation includes a Pre-Cana class or retreat, the Prepare and Enrich Marriage Preparation instrument, and liturgical planning. Those who are not parishioners of the Cathedral may celebrate their weddings in the Cathedral; however, those are exceptional cases and must be discussed with the parish staff. Fr. Sean Ralph can assist anyone interested in planning a wedding.

Intentions of the Holy FatherApril: For Evangelization - For those who have Responsibility in Economic Matters. That economists may have the courage to reject any economy of exclusion and know how to open new paths.

Family Perspectives on the Gospel In the confusion of Easter morning, Peter proved to be a mentor to the younger disciple in today’s Gospel. Even though the younger disciple arrived first at the empty tomb, he waited for Peter to make sense of this confusing event. Children in our families and neighborhoods also need mentors to help them make sense out of the confusing times and bewildering events that surround their lives. We can help our young people “see and believe” just like the young disciple in the Gospel.

Charitable Giving Ideas - Will you have increased income as a result of the new tax changes? Perhaps you can consider increasing your offertory contribution to our parish. Changes in the tax law kept in place several popular and attractive charitable gifting options. Gifting appreciated stock (held more than 1 year) to our parish may allow you to deduct the stock’s full value and bypass capital gains tax. Also, if you are 70 ½ or older, you may be able to reduce your taxable income this year with a gift made directly from your IRA to our parish. Talk to your advisors and IRA administrator for more information, and to be sure that a gift is made directly from an IRA to a qualified charity such as our parish. Questions? Contact our parish office at 216-771-6666. You are also welcome to contact Mary Lou Ozimek of the Catholic Community Foundation at 216-696-6525 x4070 or via email at <[email protected]>.
