The Year of Family

Principal’s Message Dear St. John the Evangelist Community: On behalf of the staff at St. John the Evangelist, welcome you back to what will be a great 2015-2016 academic year. I would like to welcome Mr. Brett Howlett as part of the leadership team. Mr. Howlett, the staff and I will continue to provide an education that focuses on teaching the whole child: spiritually, academically, socially, emotionally and physically; thus achieving our goal— to ensure that our children are discern-ing believers in God, reflective and creative thinkers, self-directed lifelong learners, collaborative contributors, caring family members and responsible citizens. (Catholic School Graduate Expectations—CSGE).

In May 2015 the Board launched its new three-year pastoral plan “Together With One Voice: Harmonizing Our Faith Through Family, Parish & School”. This is year one—the Year of Family. This plan directs most of our activities as Catholics, and fits well with the CSGE and CST messages we con-vey to our students. Each month our calendar will tie together the Virtues, CSGE and the CST. We invite our families to identify the ways they can live out these very basic Catholic beliefs in their day to day living. Together we can be a powerful team in building a community grounded in gospel values, and students who are engaged and motivated to succeed. The staff and I look forward to working with you and your children. Sincerely, Laurienne Graham

OUR PASTOR With the beginning of the school year, Fr. Maderak, our pastor at St. John the Evangelist Parish will once again come to us for monthly masses. Information on Sacramental Preparation will follow. CONFIRMATION Please find attached a letter from Cardinal Thomas Collins regarding a change in the 2016 Confirmation preparation. The school grade for Confirmation has been changed from grade 8 to grade 7 but there will be a transition period tak-ing effect this September. This will include stu-dents who will be in grade 7 and grade 8 starting school this September. There will be two infor-mation sessions for parents and candidates on Sunday, September 27 at 2:30 p.m and/or Tues-day, September 29 at 7:45 p.m. OUR TRUSTEE Mr. Frank D’Amico is our trustee (Ward 6—York) and continues to advocate for the entire commu-nity. We thank him for the generous donation of the Writing Journey, for grade 1—4. Our stu-dents will benefit from these engaging tools. CSAC ELECTIONS & CURRICULUM NIGHT Our CSAC elections will be held on Wednesday, September 23rd at 6:15 p.m. in the staffroom. We will hold elections at that time, and then convene our first CSAC meeting of this school year. Our BBQ and Curriculum Night will be held on Thursday, October 1st at 5:30 p.m. We will as-semble in the yard at that time, and we look for-ward to meeting you in person. Our opening re-marks for Curriculum Night will take place in the gym at 6:30 p.m. TERRY FOX WEEK The week of September 21st, we will host a num-ber of events in honour of this courageous Cana-dian. This will culminate with a walk on Friday, September 25th (weather permitting) to gather at Earlscourt Park. IMMUNIZATIONS Toronto Public Health will offer Two Doses of Hepatitis B and One Dose of Meningitis C immun-ization to Grade 7 students again this year. Any students who were in Grade 7 last year and start-ed the Hepatitis B vaccine, but did not complete it, can do so this year. Catch up clinics will be offered in January and June at the Civic Centers for any Grade 7 and 8 students who were absent during the school clinic. Information will follow. The HPV vaccine will also be made available for grade 8 girls. Information will be sent home.

LATE/ABSENT STUDENTS The safety of our students is of the utmost concern to us. In the event that your child may be late or ab-sent, please contact the school at (416) 393-5244 (press 1 to report an absence/late) to provide the particulars regarding times and/or dates. DO NOT LEAVE A MESSAGE ON THE TEACHER’S EXTENSION- please call the office. If students arrive after the bell, they are to go by the office to pick up a late slip. Please assist us by making sure that students arrive on time. Note: Classes begin at 9:00 a.m. BUSSING & STUDENT DROP OFF From time to time the bus may be late ar-riving at your stop in the morning. If this occurs, we ask that you contact the bus company directly to in-quire about the bus as they will have information on all their routes. If your child is not coming by bus, he/she must be dropped off at the main office after 8:45. Please note that there is no supervision prior to 8:45 a.m. SUPERVISION Our students arrive, by bus, at 9:00 a.m. Therefore, there is no classroom supervision prior to that time. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CHILD UNAT-TENDED AT THE BUS STOP, PRIOR TO BUS AR-RIVAL, OR IN THE SCHOOL YARD. NO ONE WILL BE ON DUTY AND WE CANNOT BE RE-SPONSIBLE FOR THEIR SAFETY. VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL In the interest of safety for all of our students please follow the guidelines below during school hours. Visitors must enter the building through the front doors located by the office and report directly to the office. Only staff may move beyond office area, all other adults must be accompanied by a staff mem-ber. Student safety is our main concern. PARKING AT SCHOOL When dropping off or picking up your child/ren at school please DO NOT PARK IN THE SCHOOL BUS LOADING ZONES OR IN THE STAFF PARKING LOT. We must keep the School Bus Loading zone free in order to ensure the safety of all students boarding the busses. EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURES & DRILLS Should the school ever need to evacuate the premises, the students will be relocated to St. Rita School. From time to time we have fire and lockdown drills.

This is to ensure that the children understand our procedures, and all are safe. Please be assured that the children benefit from these prac-tice drills, and all staff are there to ease any anxiety or uncertainty.

DPA Daily Physical Activity, will occur at the end of the day in your child’s classroom; the teacher and /or intermediate students will lead the ses-sion. STUDENT INFORMATION PACKAGES Please ensure that all information regarding your child is up-to-date by completely filling out the forms, sent home, for each child that you have attending the school. Please return them to the school as soon as possible. This will ensure that we have correct information for your child regard-ing home address, home, work and cell tele-phone numbers, babysitter’s, emergency contact numbers and medical information which may have changed. If changes occur to this infor-mation during the year, please notify us in writ-ing so that we can keep our files current. All in-formation will be kept in the strictest confidence. Included are the General Permission Forms that allow the staff to take students to nearby loca-tions and on community walks as the need arises. Please complete these forms and return them to the school. Also included is the Student Internet Agreement. Please review the TCDSB Acceptable Use Policy carefully with your child, sign it and return it promptly. Students will not be allowed to access the internet at school without your prior written consent being on file. EXCURSION PERMISSION FORMS From time to time your child will be attending ex-cursions and sporting events that are valuable components of their school life. Teachers will send home permission forms that must be signed by the parent or legal guardian. NO VERBAL PERMIS-SIONS WILL BE ALLOWED. These forms must be returned to the teacher with your signature. If there is no signed form, your child cannot phone home and request permission—this is a legal issue. Also, let us remember that we are helping stu-dents to develop positive character traits when we model these habits of organization and respon-sibility. STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE Despite staff vigilance, accidents may occur. Par-ents are strongly advised to mail their completed Student Accidental Insurance application form, directly to the RELIABLE LIFE Insurance Co.

STUDENT MEDICAL INFORMATION Kindly provide the school with any information re-garding medical conditions that your child may have, or conditions they may be affected by, to enable us to assist your child if a medical emergency arises. ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION AT SCHOOL From time to time students may need to take pre-scription medication at school. In order for this to take place, parents/guardians and physicians will need to complete and sign the appropriate Special Services Medical Forms which can be requested through the school secretary. The aim of these forms is to en-sure that any medication that is being administered at school is carried out as prescribed by the attend-ing physician. Non-prescription medication WILL NOT be administered to students, nor should they be sent to school. CLASSROOM INTERRUPTIONS We strive to keep our school a safe place and to keep classroom interruptions to a minimum in order to max-imize the time our students spend learning. Please assist us by:

Reporting to the office whenever entering the school as per TCDSB policy.

Not calling the school to speak to your child on the phone, since we do not have any way of ensuring that the person on the phone is indeed who they say they are, or if they are entitled access to the stu-dent. If it is essential, we will have your child call you back at recess or lunch time.

Making arrangements for picking up students for appointments etc., before the school day begins and notifying the teacher in writing.

Not speaking to your child’s teacher during class time. This may result in the teacher being distracted from his/her primary roles of safety and education. If you need to speak to your child’s teacher, please call and make an appointment at a mutually convenient time. AGENDAS Agendas will soon be in the classrooms and ready to be handed out. Please send in $7.00 to purchase one. These are crucial organizational tools and we encourage every child to have one. Not only do they help students keep track of homework and as-signments, but they can also be used by parents to communicate with the teacher. There is a tip sheet for parent and student infor-mation attached to this newsletter. It outlines effec-tive strategies for using an agenda.

FOOD ALLERGIES As in the past, please note that we have a growing number of students in our school that have severe, life threatening, allergies to peanuts and nuts. This is a medical condi-tion that causes a severe anaphylactic reaction to specific foods that can be fatal. Although this may not affect a student in your child’s class directly, we ask that you DO NOT SEND ANY PRODUCTS THAT MAY CONTAIN PEA-NUT OR NUT PRODUCTS TO SCHOOL, as children can come into contact with one another elsewhere in the school. As well, it is for this reason students are not allowed to share food at school. This includes treats that you may wish to send for celebra-tions such as birthdays. If you wish to treat the children for a special occasion please purchase non-food items, such as pencils, stickers etc. that can be shared without risk. We thank you in advance for your support in helping to keep all the students in our care safe. OUR SCHOOL DRESS CODE As a community that strives for excellence, we abide by the TCDSB dress-code. Students must be in uniform, unless it is a civies day or special occasion (which will be indicated in our newsletter/calendar). The following quote underscores all the day to day things we en-courage our children to do to ensure their success: “We choose what attitudes we have right now. And it’s a continuing choice.” — John C. Maxwell (1947- ), Being in uniform is part of the attitudes we cul-tivate.. Our dress code is as follows:

A White Top, such as a T-shirt, Golf Shirt or Turtleneck with No Logo, or with a Very Small Logo and No Lace;

NO Muscle Shirts, Tank Tops, or Hoodies are allowed;

White or Dark Blue Sweaters and Sweatshirts to go over the white top without a Logo, or with a Very Small Logo, and without Lace trim; NO Hood-ies are allowed;

Pants, and Skirts or Shorts that are KNEE LENGTH, are to be only Dark Blue and not Blue Jean Fabric;

Skirts are acceptable, but girls may find playing in one awkward, or be cold wearing one in the winter;

Short skirts with tights under them ARE NOT acceptable uniform items.

Please DO NOT purchase for school:

Any Denim (Blue Jean)

Tops/bottoms with Lace Trim or Large Logos, Short Skirts or Short Shorts or leggings

If you are unsure, please feel free to call us. before buying any uniform items. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Please do not allow your children to bring electronic devices to school, unless request by the teacher for educational purposes. We have no way of ensuring that they will not be stolen, damaged or lost. The school cannot be responsible for student’s electronic equipment. Students may have a telephone at school for safety rea-sons. As part of that same safety issue, students are not permitted to use their cell phones during school hours, unless for educational purposes. If you need to contact your child, please call the office and we will ensure that they receive any messages you may need to forward. If students are using their telephones during school hours, and not for educational purposes, they will be removed from them. TENTATIVE CLASSES During June, staff and administration established tenta-tive class lists using the information provided in letters received from families indicating they would be return-ing in September. Projections for the number of new students who would arrive were also put in place. At the same time, if at the end of August and during the first two weeks of this school year, new students were to reg-ister, or some students not return, there may be fluctu-ations in the enrolment numbers. As a result, there may be class reorganizations. Please remember that all clas-ses are tentative until September 30, 2015. Also, please see pamphlet on combined grades attached to this news-letter. Changes to enrolment may necessitate combining some classes. ECO-CERTIFICATION SJE is now a bronze certi fied eco-school. As a com-munity, we will continue teacher supervised and student led activities. Some easy things we have implemented that make a significant difference:

Litterless lunches (pack food in reusable contain-ers); No plastic water bottles—reusable water bottles only; An electronic version of the newslet-ter, and other timely correspondence, can reduce photocopying by at least 50%. Money saved can then be reinvested in learning materials, including technology. Addresses for the blog, twitter and portal are on the front page of this newsletter.

REVISED ONTARIO HEALTH AND PHYSED CURRIC-ULUM Many Catholic institutions, teachers, parents and stu-dents have been involved in revising our Fully Alive pro-gram which was implemented between 2008 and 2015. The vast majority of the content required by the revised curriculum is already covered within the Fully Alive pro-gram. Please see the responses from two Catholic Insti-tutions to many parents’ concerns about the new curricu-lum. It is attached to this newsletter.

Tips for Using Your Agenda Book

Use your agenda book to organize & schedule time for assignments, studying and personal events.

Use the weekly calendar

to record shorter term projects and daily homework

• Record all homework tasks on the day they are assigned. Include the due date.

• Schedule study time - individual as well as group sessions.

• Keep track of field trips, appointments, club meetings and activities.

(Remember to include family events & special dates too. Avoid surprises.

You don’t want to forget anything.)

Use the monthly calendar

to plan long term assignments and study for major tests.

• On the monthly calendar write down

due dates for all tests, assignments,

and long-term projects (such as

essays)

as they are assigned. Also

record a reminder well before the

due date.

• Record all assignments/test results on

the “Record of Achievement” pages.

This will help you determine which of

your subjects require improvement

and extra study time.

AFTER SCHOOL / AT HOME:

• Arrange your work in order of priority.

• Commit yourself to a schedule and stick to it.

• Schedule your work time in half-hour blocks. Plan to spend more time on the subjects which

require improvement.

• Remember to schedule time for long term projects.

Record this on the monthly calendar as a reminder.

• Make time to review assignments & tests returned by your teacher.

• Check off assignments that you have completed.

• Review your weekly schedule regularly and adjust it as required.

Tips for Using Your Agenda Book

In class:

1. Listen carefully when your teacher gives the assignment.

Look at your teacher and think about the assignment.

If you have a question about the assignment, ask your teacher now!

2. Locate today’s date in the weekly calendar section.

3. Locate the date when the assignment is due.

4. Write the assignment on the due date (i.e. When is the assignment supposed to be handed in

to the teacher?) Make entries brief but be sure that you can understand them. First write an

abbreviation for the subject. Then write the assignment.

For example:

Before you leave school:

1. Check your agenda book. Decide what homework you need to do this evening.

2. Get out the materials you will need for your homework.

3. If you don’t understand one of the assignments, ask your teacher or a classmate about it

before you leave school.

At home:

1. First, do the assignments that are due tomorrow.

When you finish an assignment, put a checkmark beside it in your agenda book.

2. Next, work on assignments that are due in the future.

Or study for a test / quiz, in advance.

3. If you have a question about an assignment, call one of your study buddies.

Tip: At the beginning of the year, exchange phone numbers with someone in each of your

classes; someone who you can call if you have missed work, or need help.

(Write down their phone numbers in the “Contact Directory” at the back of your agenda book.)

Combined Grades in TCDSB

Elementary Schools—Our Philosophy:

Student achievement and well-being is the core pillar of the Toronto Catholic District School Board’s Multi-Year Strategic Plan. Walk into any classroom, and you will find children at various stages of social, physical and intellectual development. No two children are exactly the same, even if they are the same age. Each child has unique learning needs—strengths and areas that need improvement. Learning styles and preferences are unique to each student. Teachers are trained to differentiate the instruction and adjust the learning program in the classroom to the needs of each student. In combined grade classes, teachers use evidence based strategies to teach the curriculum.

The Board understands that children learn continuously; their intellectual, social and personal development does not occur in compartmentalized, grade- specific segments. Our primary concern as advocates for children is to provide a stable, effective learning environment for all students in our care. Research has shown that achievement levels of combined grade class students are as good as and usually better than the achievement levels of students placed in single grade classes. Findings also show that children in classes where there is more than one age level learn to become more independent, responsible learners and develop a greater degree of social responsibility. Students in combined grade classes generally develop a greater sense of belonging, support and confidence.

“Research indicates that students in combined grades classrooms achieve the same level of academic results as

those in single grade classes. Some researchers believe that

this occurs as a result of student selection as well as

effective teaching.”

Revised Ontario Health and Physical Education Curriculum (2015) Responses from:

1) THE ARCHDIOCESE OF TORONTO

"While we have a responsibility to teach the curriculum set out by the Ministry of Education in education policy, we have always done so in a manner that conveys, respects and models Catholic principles to our students."

"Working with Ministry of Education guidelines, Catholic schools use the Gospel of Jesus and the tradition of the Catholic Church as the starting point in our educational approach to all content. The vast majority of the content required by the revised curriculum is already covered within the Fully Alive program."

"Although some of the content from the existing curriculum has been reassigned, with the expectation that it be delivered in earlier grades, we are confident the revised curriculum will be delivered within the context of our family Life program, in a way that is consistent with church teachings and our faith tradition."

2) THE INSTITUTE FOR CATHOLIC EDUCATION (ICE)

"The Ministry of Education has been in conversation with the Institute for Catholic Education, and the political staff within the Ministry's office have similarly been in communication with the Catholic partner Associations (OCSTA, OECTA, OCSOA, CPCO, ACBO) at intervals throughout this process."

"The Ministry has committed to provide funding to support the development of specific resources and materials that will be appropriate for use in Catholic schools, and will support teachers as they implement the revised curriculum." “Teams are currently being assembled to develop supplementary resources and initial materials will be available for the start of the school year in September 2015.” (March 5th, 2015)

Please go to Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario Go to Fully Alive tab and you will find the updated curriculum.
