“Church”
The Jews were
gathered together by
God to form a
worshiping and
believing community
(Hebrew, Qahal
Yahweh). Christians
were also called to be
the people of God, the
Church. Matthew is
the only evangelist to
use the Greek term
ecclesia, meaning "church" in his gospel (Mt 16:18; 18:17).
In the first instance, the word referred to how the church
should correct sinners in the community. Jesus wanted the
future leaders of the church to learn how to deal with these
persistent sinners. If a Christian attempted to correct another
member of the community who had sinned against him, and
that person remained unrepentant, additional members of the
community were to be brought in to settle the matter. If the
person continued to be obstinate, the case should be referred
to the whole "church." This divine authority to "loose and
bind" had been assigned to Peter (Mt.16:19; 1 Cor. 5:9-13),
and was now given to the church. The church should never
see people as hopeless sinners, but always treat those who
had fallen with kindness and love as Jesus did. Christ is
eternally present in the Christian community in which the
power of united prayer is effective.

Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross
Thursday, September 24th
During the fourth century, the Church
was relatively free from persecution
since Constantine's Edict of Milan
(313 AD) declared Christianity a
tolerated religion. The custom of
making the sign of the cross on one's
forehead was widespread fairly early.
Tertullian wrote about 204 AD: "At
every forward step and movement, at every going in and
out, when we put on our clothes and shoes, when we bathe,
when we sit at table, when we light the lamps, in all the
ordinary actions of daily life, we trace upon the forehead the
sign." St. Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine, was a
Christian. She was obsessed with a desire to find the cross
on which Christ had been crucified. In this quest, she
allegedly identified and excavated almost every significant
site pertaining to the Gospel stories. According to legend,
Helena discovered the True Cross while on a pilgrimage to
the Holy Land in 326.
Memorial of our Lady of Sorrows
Friday, September 15th
The feast of Our Lady of
Sorrows was originally
granted to the Order of
the Servants of Mary in
1667. It was introduced
into the Roman calendar
in 1814 and assigned to
the third Sunday in
September. In 1913 the
date of the feast was
assigned to September
15.
Chaplet of the seven sorrows of Mary pray one Hail Mary
while meditating on each of the Seven.
Sorrows of Mary: 1. The prophecy of Simeon.
2. The flight into Egypt.
3. The loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple.
4. Mary meeting Jesus carrying His Cross.
5. The Crucifixion.
6. Mary receiving the Body of Jesus from the Cross.
7. The Body of Jesus being placed in the tomb.
Then pray three Hail Mary's in remembrance of the tears
Mary shed because of the suffering of Her Divine Son.
Concluding prayers: Pray for us, O Most Sorrowful
Virgin, that we may be made worthy of the promises of
Christ Lord Jesus, we now implore, both for the present and
for the hour of our death, the intercession of the Most
Blessed Virgin Mary, Your Mother, whose Holy Soul was
pierced during Your Passion by a sword of grief. Grant us
this favor, O Savior of the world, who lives and reigns with
the Father and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen

Collection to Benefit Hurricane Harvey
Our prayers go out to all those who experienced the fury of
Hurricane Harvey. As residents begin to rebuild & healing
following the storm, Bishop Ricken is asking parishes to
conduct a collection to assist victims and Dioceses affected
by Hurricane Harvey. The funds collected will be used to
support the efforts of Catholic Charities USA, as they and
their member agencies respond emergency needs for water,
food, shelter and medical care as well as to the long term
needs to rebuild and recover. Make checks payable to your
parish.
Parishioners may also make their donation through Catholic
Charities USA at www.catholiccharitiesusa.org
Faith Formation
Living as Missionary Disciples
This year’s theme for Faith Formation is “Living as
Missionary Disciples.” But just what does it mean to be
a missionary disciple?
In Baptism, we (or our parents) are invited to state just
what it is that we are asking of the Church. When we
ask for Baptism, we are asking to become disciples of
Jesus Christ.
Perhaps you’ve not thought of yourself as a disciple of
Christ but only as a member of his Church. One can be
a member of the Church without living a life of
discipleship. To be a disciple of Jesus is to choose an
alternate way of living—one in which God reigns. It is
a life marked by selfless love. It is a life marked by joy
and hope—a confidence that, in God, all shall be well.
For many Catholics, discipleship is a relatively new
concept. Today, more than ever, Catholics are being
challenged to change our thinking about discipleship
and to realize that each of us—by virtue of our
Baptism—is called to enter intentionally into
discipleship with Jesus Christ. We are then called to
communicate this living relationship to others.
So what can you do to deepen your own intentionality
as a disciple of Jesus?
Recognize and accept the fact that you cannot sustain
yourself when it comes to spiritual fulfillment.
Embrace the fact that only God can sustain you and
that he offers his intervention through Jesus Christ, his
Son.
Let go of those things in which, until now, you have
been seeking fulfillment.
Respond each and every day to Jesus’ invitation to
follow him.
Strive to get to know Jesus through reading the Gospels
and inspirational literature, regular prayer, receiving
the Eucharist, and serving the needs of others. Share
the joy of the Gospel with others.
Blessings+

Would you like to teach?
We are looking for a grade 6 catechist to add to our group.
In grade 6 we explore the Old and New Testaments. There
are a dozen or so videos that enhance the lessons. Please
spend some time in prayer and consider this very rewarding
Living as a Missionary Disciple! Contact the Faith
Formation Office if you are interested, or if you think of
someone you think would be a great addition to our
program, and I will call and invite them! One other area the
program needs help with is the prayers the children learn for
their grade level. You do not need to be here every week for
this. Call the Faith Formation Office and I can give you
more information. Lastly, please keep us in your daily
prayers. Great things happen when we pray for one another!
