Dear Friends in Christ,
This week I have included the Christmas message from Fr. Ailbe in Ireland. Since he left us in August, he has moved twice. In one of those moves, aided by a mattress he was carrying, he fell forward and broke his thumb and two bones in his wrist. He says that it is healing but is still a little sore. Please pray for his complete recovery and that his schedule will permit him to be with us again next summer:
A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM FR. AILBE O’MURCHU, ofm
It is that time of year when yellow leaves or none do hang upon the bow that shakes against the cold.
It is that time of year when once again we reflect on the historical event, when God became man, for our sake.
It is that time of year when in the quiet moments we ruminate on our mortality and immortality to come.
This great moment of history took place in space and time. In Bethlehem, under the Emperor Augustus and his governor, Quirinius.
Jesus entered the world through the working of the Holy Spirit (Matt:1:20). He is God’s Son (LK:1:32-35). This is the miracle of God’s coming and His Incarnation. He is Emmanuel, God with us (Matt:1:23).
By the merciful love of God, radiant light from on high is visited upon us in order to enlighten all those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. (LK:1:78ff).
Luke’s Christmas story proclaims the birth of the Saviour, which has long been expected and hoped for: “to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.” (LK:2:11).
This story subverts human categories. A barren woman like Elizabeth and a virgin like Mary become pregnant (LK:1:7-34). The powerful are toppled from their thrones and the lowly are raised up. The hungry are filled with good things while the rich are sent empty away (LK1:52ff). It is a history in which God brings life and death, makes poor and rich, humbles some and elevates others (1.Sam2:1-11).
It anticipates the Sermon on the Mount, in which the poor, the mourners, the powerless, the merciful, the peacemakers and those persecuted are the Blessed of God. (Matt.5:3-11).
In the light of this Epistle, I wish you and yours a very happy, peaceful and blessed Christmas.
May the miracle of the crib at Bethlehem continue to watch over you and give you peace.
Let us continue to remember each other in that “Communion”, which unites heaven and earth, the continents of the world and also one another.

It’s good for your heart and soul. A message from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office:
REMEMBER TO LOCK YOUR CAR WHILE IN CHURCH.
