TREASURE HUNT R . I S , P V

Forrest Fenn, a wealthy art dealer living in NewMexico, offered only a short poem to serve as a hint, to those interested in hun ng a hidden treas-ure. “Begin it where warm waters halt/and take in the canyon down/not far, but too far to walk/put in below the home of Brown.” The search for the treasure, roughly ten pounds of gold metals, ar -facts, gems, jewelries, and valuables worth millions of dollars, was the talk of town for a decade. The game of searching for the treasure a racted over 350,000 people from all walks of life; some resign-ing their regular jobs to dedicate their full me and energy into searching for the hidden treasure. The search went on for over ten years, before it was finally discovered by a man who chose to remain anonymous; and unfortunately, five people had died at different mes, in the process of searching for the revered box. Forrest presumed it would bring people off of their couches and away from their TV screens into an adventurous journey, and maybe into a fortune for life. The kingdom of God is definitely a hidden treasure of which so many people have not seen its worth and dynamic trans-forma on.

In the church there is a spiritual treasury made up of the superabundant merits of Our Lord, the Blessed Mother, and the saints. The merits of the passion and death of Our Lord are infinite, for he is God. All these he le to his church. When the church grants an indulgence, it does not really can-cel any expia on due to God. It only supplies for our deficiencies by drawing on the spiritual treas-ury of the church, exercising the power of the keys given (to Peter) by Christ (My Catholic Faith, Louis La Ravoire Morrow P.335).

God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness, freely created man to make him share in his own blessed life. For this reason, at every me and in every place, God draws close to man. He calls man to seek him, to know him, to love him with all his strength. He calls together all men, sca ered and divided by sin, into the unity of his family, the church. To accomplish this, when the fullness of me had come, God sent his son as redeemer and savior. In his son and through him, he invites men to become, in the Ho-ly Spirit, his adopted children and thus heirs of his blessed life (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 9).

Jesus Christ uses every means available to remain relevant to his audience: the example of a precious treasure is astonishing; so also a fisherman who caught all kinds of sea animals, but had to select the good ones throwing the bad ones away into eternal damna on. The poten al owner of the pearls in the gospel of today will do everything possible to possess them. This explains how Jesus Christ inconveniences himself to save the dignity of human life as the most precious value in the world. At this challenging me, we ought to pray always, never to lose hope (Luke 18:1), and to volunteer into discipleship in order to welcome ourselves in-to the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ and his sal-va on.

The Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls . When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it. Matthew 13:45-46

We still adorn the altars with flowers during the summer and if you want to help adorn the altars you may purchase “Flowers for the Marian Altar” $15.00 or “Flowers for the Sanctuary Altar” $30.00. The flowers come with a dedication in the bulletin. Please email admin at: [email protected] to request Flowers.

Please email [email protected] to obtain an intention, and mail a $10 donation to St. Paul with the envelope marked Attention: Mass Inten-tions. If a specific date is needed, please ask for intentions at least one month in advance of the date. Please remember to include your phone number.

Irene was elected as Arizona Regent to the National Board of Catholic Daughters of the Americas. The Catholic Daughters of the Americas was formed in 1906, by Knights of Columbus as its counterpart group for women. This is a charitable and

patriotic sorority for Catholic women with more than 66,000 members. Their mission, in the words of Venerable Bishop Fulton J Sheen, is to be “Catholic Daughters to the World”. Their motto is Unity and Charity with their patroness, the Blessed Mother they are united by their faith in Jesus Christ and devotion to the Church. They contribute to many community efforts including honoring veterans, pro-life, promote patriotism, assist women in need, teen pregnancy, nurturing the elderly and more. Give to our brothers and sisters throughout the world as if once more Jesus had come into the world cold, hungry, and alone. -St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who spoke at National Catholic Daughter, October 15th 1972.

Hello Parish Families: I pray that with God’s blessings, each family is having a safe and healthy summer. Thank you all again for your continued support while wearing masks on campus, in helping us with social dis-tancing during Mass, contributions to the sanitizing sta-tions in the church and office and much, much more. All your support and prayers are keeping the community as safe as possible and indicate what a privilege it is to keep our Church open and receive the Holy Eucharist during this time. Continue to pray for your staff, your Pastor and Parochial Vicar. May God continue to protect the Community of St. Paul’s. As the new school year approaches, we are happy to an-nounce that we will be continuing with our Family For-mation Program. Beginning in October we will have our home lessons packets available for all ages from pre-kindergarten through 6th grade. Due to the uncertainties brought forth by the COVID pandemic, we are not able to schedule our 1st Sunday Family Formation Days in O’Carroll Hall as usual. However, through the wonderful lessons and activities offered by the Family Formation program we can still invite Jesus into our homes and ex-perience His presence as we learn more about our faith in our home environment.

In efforts to continue a robust and exciting sacramental program for our children, we are currently reviewing the sacramental program offered through Family Formation in conjunction with our current program from St. Mary’s Press. We will present a high-quality program with ad-visement shortly. Family Formation Registration will be available on-line through the St. Paul website beginning, Monday July 27, 2020 or you may pick up a paper registration form from the parish office during posted office hours. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit we are all learning how to be creative with our time and talent working hard to implement alternate plans for our parish families in order that we may stay connected as a community, and as a family. The entire staff, council members and ministry leaders thank each of you for the continued support, un-derstanding and patience during these uncertain times. If you have any questions regarding Family Formation in the fall, please call the office or email Craig Cullity at [email protected] Continue to watch the Family Formation Corner for more updates. God bless and as our beloved Fr. Victor used to say, “Keep Praying”.

Hope Remains: A Journey to Africa By Dr. Sue Moravec(Part 6) Life was going to get busier, lots of preparations for several upcoming events. The ordination of Fa-ther Julius as the 2nd Bishop of Kafanchan is the reason for our journey, and reason for hope. The Diocese has been waiting two long years for a new Bishop. The BIG day for the ordination at the Stadium in Kafanchan, where thousands were expected, is to be next week. Today I meet Paula. She will help me get measured for Nigerian dresses for the various upcoming events. I am self-conscious due to being overweight, but she made me feel great. Meanwhile, I was adjusting to life in Nigeria. I had running water in Kaduna, but no shower – hello! cold water bucket baths and only African cuisine except a “pizza” which tasted worse than any frozen pizza. Food stands & markets line the streets; however, they were not safe to visit. The menu was foreign, what was “swallow”? But I bravely tried everything, including “swallow,” or fufu (like a dumpling). The food is incredibly spicey. We would inform the cook not to make it spicy, but they just slightly lessened the pain in my mouth. Good thing for rice, fish & fried plantain. Bishop George said I would make a great missionary worker there; everyone was amazed how quickly I adjusted to Nigerian food & life.

The gentlemen in this photo were my gracious hosts in Kaduna. These are two of Fr. Victor’s brothers, Callistus & Chris. See any resemblance to their par-ents & sibling? They would do everything to make me comfortable. Chris did all the driving, both would cook for us, and make sure I had my favorite hot tea. I love and miss them.

A few reflections. First, there is great respect for all clergy and Church. Faith, family, and “oneness” in the Church is at the forefront. The threats to the Catholic life with increasing violence is reported on the news and there are reasons not to be hopeful. The kidnappings of priests, burning Christian villages and abduction of the seminarians are constant conversa-tion for prayers. The Church is being attacked, yet despite the poverty, hunger, and

homelessness due to high unemployment, there is indeed hope. As people grab onto their children’s hands, their faces show de-termination and faith. On Sundays, wearing their best clothes, people walk for miles to get to Mass early, waiting in the hot sun for the next Mass to start. Villagers share their food, crops determine the menu and at night without electricity, you can barely see people sitting around a fire, gathered for evening prayer. The government refuses to pave any roads that are in Christian parts of

town, including the road to the Catholic Church. The Church must lay down concrete blocks and provide secu-rity as deterrent to Muslin militants. Despite safety risks, the people will not abandon their churches, schools, semi-naries, and hospitals. The Catholic Diocese oversee all these institutions. The picture above is Sister Beatrice, Fr. Victor’s aunt who is the chief nurse at Catholic hospital and nursing school. The Catholic church is more than a place to go for Mass, it is where hope lives. Infants, chil-dren, young adults are all formed in faith from the begin-ning. Family guidance on life decisions is sought from the parish priest. The Church is the people of Christ, who by faith share food, shelter, medicine, and education.

It would be unheard of to make any negative comments towards the Church or clergy or another brother or sister in faith. That would be disrespectful to Jesus himself. In a homily, Fr. Ishaya mentioned how as priests, they are

sought out for help for any family crisis, but to observe it myself was so humbling. I encountered Jesus, with everyone I met. How can we experience this loving display of hope over adversity here in the US?
