FROM THE PASTOR Praise be Jesus Christ! Every February 2nd on the Church’s liturgical calendar is the feast of the Presentation of the Lord (known also as the feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or even some-times colloquially as the feast of “Candlemas”). The feast takes place 40 days after Christmas, in commemoration of the fact that according to Old Testament law, if a woman gave birth to a male child, the child was to be circumcised on the 8th day of his birth (which corresponds to the January 1st
Holy Day on our calendar), after which the mother was to wait another 33 days until a sacrifice could be offered in the temple for her “ritual purification,” thus adding up to 40 days after childbirth (see Leviticus 12 for the Scriptural description of this law).
There is also another Old Testament law regarding first-born sons which is fulfilled at the same time. I think it would make this bulletin column too long if I tried to discuss all the nuances of that law right now, particularly as it pertains to the specific case of Jesus (but you can ask me about it in person if you would like). Suffice it to say that both Mary and Jesus have an important reason to be in the temple on this occasion. Therefore, acting in obedience to Old Testament law, St. Joseph and Our Blessed Mother go to Jerusalem on the fortieth day to offer this sacrifice of purification, which consequently, becomes the first time that the infant Jesus is brought to the temple. This is why we read in Luke 2:22: “And when the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought [Jesus] up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.”
While in the temple, St. Luke recounts the beautiful scene of the elderly man Simeon, who had been told by God that he would not see death before he had seen the Messiah. Upon finally seeing the infant Christ, he takes the child in his arms and makes the famous declaration:
Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples, light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.
On account of Simeon’s calling Christ the “light” for revelation to the Gentiles, the tradition of blessing candles on this day has existed for centuries. So much so, that the ritual for Mass today has the blessing built in to the beginning of the liturgy. You’ll notice that even our pew Missalettes provide the text and ceremony of the blessing.
Therefore, I will do the blessing of candles before all of the SUNDAY Masses next week (that is, before the 8am, 10am, and noon Mass, but not the Saturday vigil). In some ways, the blessing is similar in structure to the blessing of palms on Palm Sunday. We will provide small congregational candles at the entrances of the church. Before the start of Mass I will go to the back of church where there will be a table of unblessed candles for use on the altar throughout the year. Then we will light all the candles held by the congregation and do the blessing of all of the candles (both those held by the people and those on the table), followed by the procession and the rest of Mass. It is a very short ceremony, but a great opportunity for us since this feast only occasionally happens to fall on a Sunday. If you have candles that you would like to have blessed along with the altar and congregational candles, you are welcome to bring them with you next Sunday and place them on the table in the back before the start of Mass. The candles can be any style that you would like, but should be for home devotional use. I wouldn’t suggest bringing just any random scented or merely decorative candles that you happen to have around the house. Bring candles that you would actually light at your table, or perhaps in front of a holy image or on a home shrine. In the hearts of Jesus and Mary,
Father Peter Van Lieshout

OUR LADY OF LOURDES PRINT NOW ON DISPLAY on the shelf above the candle rack at St. Felix
This representation received inspiration from the sixth apparition of Bernadette in which the Lady, diverting her eyes from the child, had turned them afar with an expression of sadness; then returning again to Bernadette, she exclaimed, "Pray for sinners." We also see her counting her beads with Bernadette as given in another part of the narrative. Details of Bernadette's garments are taken from the clothing of a doll made by the Sisters of Nevers for
our "Father Bernadette." Written by Sr. Marie Pierre Semler, M.M.
