GC Globalizaion and Cultures Class

Hong KongPeru

A three-credit, discussion-style class in which we studied the con-ict between tradition and moder-nity and the phenomenon of glo-balization.

Natalya was an exchange student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She lived in a dorm with local Hong Kongers, took classes at the university, and got to call the city her home. She also took advantage of Hong Kong’s great location and spent weeks backpacking throughout China, and took trips to the Philippines, Singapore, Malay-sia, and Thailand.

Amanda spent a semester abroad in Peru, where she lived with host families and researched the rituals surrounding alpaca care in the Andes.

NATALYA - This class taught me how to critique, how to formulate my views, and how to articulate complicated global issues in an academic setting and discussion. Sitting around in a big circle, the class was impactful because everyone participated on such a high level; the end of every class left my mind utterly blown.

AMANDA - I agree wholeheart-edly with Natalya. It was surpris-ing to me not just how dierent my classmates’ views were from my own, but how much I could learn from hearing them, debat-ing them, and then somehow reconciling my views to theirs. That process is a learning experi-ence within itself.

NATALYA - Since my research topic was the Greek health-care system, I had one-on-one meetings with directors of the school of public health. At the larger group meetings, I also got the chance to ask questions and practice my public speaking skills. The whole experience was a thrill -- how many other college students get to ask the head of Parliament in Greece questions about their country while there are protests going on right outside the building?

AMANDA - It was surreal to meet with such powerful people, the decision makers and legislators in Greece. As I follow Greece in the news, I feel for those who are making the tough calls and trying to guide their country through this dicult time. It’s more clear to me now that these decisions are actually made by people, individuals who go home at night and stress about these things.

NATALYA - My project centers around improving the health of the youth in the South Bethlehem community. The goal of the project is to encourage young girls to enjoy physical activity while also allowing them to have a space in which they can share the challenges they are facing. The program, to take place in March and April of 2012, will take the girls out running on the Bethle-hem Greenway, followed by a discussion about girls’ issues, accompanied by healthy snacks.

AMANDA - I’m building a garden for the senior citizens of our local Hispanic Center. I get to use my Spanish skills as well as my farming skills and in a small way tackle the disparities of our local food system.

NATALYA - This class allowed me to write exten-sively about the trip to Ghana, teaching me the importance of reection. Now I like to journal for every trip I take -- looking back at my old journals makes me feel like I am re-living the experience each time.

AMANDA - Before this class I was of the mindset that reection was useful, but wasn’t pleasant to do. Now that I’ve truly seen the benets, I enjoy it, crave it even. It is in the reection where the true benets of the experience are realized.

NATALYA - This course really helped me feel comfort-able travelling to such a novel place like Ghana. I

appreciated the chance to learn about the country and the mentality ahead of time, since I knew that

the cultural shock of going to Ghana was going to be huge. I specically remember learning about African

political thought, which helped me see the lens through which some Ghanaians view the world. That

sort of insight was priceless.

AMANDA - One of the most useful things I learned was that in Ghana you should NEVER accept or oer anything with your left hand -- that’s very oensive.

AMANDA - I think for me the most powerful part of being in Ghana was that, for the rst time, I experienced what it was like to visibly be a minority. This led to a lot of reection about the experience of minorities back home.

AMANDA - On a brief excursion to the Peruvian Amazon, I realized just how much the media shapes our expectations of travel. We always see images of the rainforest as lled with exotic creatures, but I hardly saw any while I was there. Instead I spent time with people who live there. Travelling to Ghana and then Peru taught me to not hold any expectations or stereotypes: just be open to whatever awaits you when you arrive.

NATALYA - It’s dicult to sum-marize the feelings I had as we travelled throughout Ghana. I think the rst word that comes to mind is anger. I think I was angry at myself for being so fortunate while others were not. But I was also envious of the Ghanaians. They were denitely happier -- they didn’t allow their material possessions to dene them. We happened to be in Ghana during the elections, and people were just out on the streets dancing and celebrating.

NATALYA - Travelling and backpacking to so many places changed my life -- not only did I learn about dierent cultures and got to see their dierent ways of life, I also grew up overnight. It made me immensely responsible and cogni-zant of myself as an individual. Studying in Hong Kong was great because I got to study in an open academic environment with some of the best faculty in Asia. The city is extremely modern, yet intriguing aspects of Chinese culture are visible everywhere. It was really the best of both worlds.

Follow two students (Amanda Midki and Natalya Surmachevska) and their journey

through Lehigh University’s various oppor-tunitines to study abroad.
