OUR 10th ANNIVERSARY

On February 11, 2010, Bishop Aquila dedicated our new church and altar, and offered its first Mass.

As is often said, "I remember it like it was yesterday" – I really do – and now ten years have passed.

On February 11, 2020, Bishop Folda will be here to offer Mass on this special anniversary of its dedication. That will be

this Tuesday evening, and the Mass begins at 6:30 p.m. Following Mass we will have a time for socializing, with some light food

and drinks – and some special entertainment – in our Holy Family Social Hall.

I do hope you come. It's our church building, and we have much to be thankful for. It's here for our parish family, and for

that we have much to be thankful for to our God. He has graced us much.

But our church is much more than just a building. It is a place where we gather to worship our God – Father, Son, and

Holy Spirit. It is also a place where we come to pray, by ourselves or with others. It is a place of beauty, architecturally,

artistically, and spiritually. It is the place where Our Lord resides in His Real Presence in the tabernacle. It is a place we make

sure is clean and neat, maintained and taken care of. It is God's House.

And it has now been with us for ten years. It's something to celebrate with and before God. And with each other – I hope

you can join us on Tuesday evening.

* * *

It is also the umpteenth time around for the annual God's Gift Appeal. And that appeal

will never end – it's an "annual" appeal. Of course that's because the work of the Church will

never end, and the work of the Church needs our support to happen.

Our parish does all kinds of things for the Family of God, but of course it is important that we share resources to benefit

all in our diocese, and the needs are great for our entire diocesan family. Each diocesan ministry exists to support and further the

work of every parish in the diocese – and that includes ours.

One quarter (25%) of the GGA monies go to "Chancery Functions" – do you know what that is? That is the Bishop's

office and all that come out of there. His ministries among us as bishop, the liturgical office, the Catholic Education and

Formation office, the Marriage Tribunal, the Youth Ministries office, et al. Our parish directly accesses all of those diocesan

offices many times each year – thank goodness they are there!

Just about another quarter (23%) of GGA goes to Faith Education. Another 23% goes to the Family Life office. The

Office of Vocations gets 15% of the GGA funding – and every penny of that is spent well for the future of our diocese and this

parish. Our sick and elderly priests receive financial support from GGA, as well as support for our Cathedral parish where the

bishop resides.

I will tell you that I get as fatigued as anyone by all the needs out there that are put before us to support. I simply cannot

support them all – and they're all good ones. But I have to pick and choose just like I suppose you do. But of all the "asks" I get

each year, the God's Gift Appeal is the most important one for me. I would never consider not giving – the work of the Church is

too important to not support. I hope you agree with me.

The Bishop's "ask" will come to you in the mail in a week or so. I encourage you to respond as I will, and to help our

parish meet its goal. The Church encourages us to give 1% of our annual income to support the work of our diocesan church.

What a completely "do-able" ask! And with all of us responding, our goal is guaranteed and our

parish family will have continued to support the Bishop and the Diocese - as they have continued

to support our parish for the 25 years since Bishop Sullivan founded it.

The role of a Pastoral Council member is an important role in the parish family. The Church asks that each parish have a Pastoral Council made up of the lay faithful, over which the pastor presides, who can offer advice and assistance in fostering pastoral activity in the parish. It is a consultative voice for the pastor concerning any issues he brings to them from the parish, or any issues that they bring to the pastor from the people in the parish, or from their own experience of living and serving in the parish.

Serving on the Pastoral Council is a fine way to serve your parish and your brothers and sisters in the parish family. The time commitment for the Council includes five meetings per year, as well as some of the parish activities that take place each year, including the Parish Feast Day Picnic and the Fall Festival. The term for a Council member is three years, and there is no second term for any member until at least a year has intervened since their last time on the Council. This ensures that the Council always has “new blood” and is reflective of the parish at that time as it changes and grows itself.

Please consider whether you, or someone you know, might be a good person for this role. Nominations will be taken after Masses on the weekend of February 22-23, with elections to follow two weeks later. Three positions need to be filled this year; there are a total of twelve members on our Pastoral Council.

In these upcoming days/weeks, you are encouraged to pray and ask our Lord God if He is calling you – or someone you know – to this position of service in our parish. Thank you for considering this opportunity to serve God and your parish!

Catholic Health Care Directives

A resource from the North Dakota Catholic Conference — Who will speak for me when I cannot speak for myself? How can I make sure the right decisions are made about my health care?

People often avoid questions like these until faced with having to make a decision. Many of us think that only the sick or dying need to think about such matters. In truth, however, these are questions we all must ask and be able to answer -- whether we are young or old, sick or healthy. There could come a time in any person's life where he or she may not be able to communicate his or her wishes. A Catholic Health Care Directive can help you prepare for that time, should it arise. The directive conforms to North Dakota law and reflects Catholic teaching. It gives your loved ones and health care providers direction as to how you would make health care decisions. A new website exists where you can download or order copies of the directive and other useful material. Check it out at http://ndcatholic.org/CHD. If you do not have internet access, call the North Dakota Catholic Conference at 1-888-419-1237.
