BRIDGET PARISH Roman Catholic Church Route 9 East Framingham Centre, Massachusetts (508) 875-5959 Sent by God In Amos’ time the vocation of prophet had achieved a very formal status in Israel. The prophets had arisen, originally, to act as God’s voice when Israel was no longer led by the spiritual/civil ϐigures known as “judges,” but by monarchs. Over time, the monarchy had appropriated the ofϐices of priest and prophet, established them into companies, and reserved the right to appoint courtly prophets. Then, as now, when those in power also got to choose who would act as their ofϐicial conscience, things sometimes went awry. At such times, God raised up prophets from unlikely places, and this is how Amos received his vocation as prophet. In last week’s Gospel we heard how Jesus was raised up as God’s anointed from a place many viewed as unlikely. As we continue to discern our own vocation as baptized disciples, we can be assured that we are, in Paul’s words, “chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will” (Ephesians 1:11).

A True Act of Christian Kindness Needed

The school is accepting a new family, for the 2015-16 academic year, with a very unique and confidential situation. The children NEED to be in our caring, safe, nurturing, loving, comforting, Christian environment, and I am asking for your help. To quote the school’s Mission Statement: “Saint Bridget School partners with families and our church to develop the whole person within a community of faith.” If you are able to help in any way, please send your tax-deductible donation for the family via the St. Bridget Help-A-Student Fund to the attention of Mrs. Sebastian in the tuition office at the rectory. Tuition is approximately $5,000.00 per student and they have more than one child. With God’s Choicest Blessings for this family, Msgr. Strahan

Things to think about for the fall… This fall we would like to resume some of our parish apostolates but we need your help to keep them going! If you are interested in joining or would like more information please call the Rectory: (508) 875-5959. 1. First Fridays—Eucharistic Adoration runs from October-June. It requires only two people per

hour starting after the 9:00AM Mass until 12:30PM following with the benediction. Each month we would need six people in order to continue this ministry.

2. R.C.I.A—Our Parish RCIA Program starts up in September. It meets every Thursday evening from 7PM-8PM in the Parish Renewal Center. This program is for those who would like to explore the teachings of the Catholic Church with the intention of being baptized or officially received into the Church.

The Sanctuary Lamp-Sign of the Lord’s Presence †††††††††

For all those who would like to memorialize a departed loved one, or a special intention, the Sanctuary Lamp (candle) in the lower Church is available for that purpose. The Sanctuary Lamp continues to burn for 8 days. The cost of the candle is $15.00. The name of the loved one will be listed in the bulletin (if so desired) or the “special intention” request. There are weeks available for memorialization starting in mid-August. If you are interested drop this form off at the rectory as soon as possible. Each request will be honored in the order they are received. Please return to the rectory. Coffee and Donut Sign Ups !!!!!

This program operates in Oct., Nov., Feb., April, May & June on the first Sunday of the month in the School Hall after the 9:30AM Mass until 11:00AM.

Preparing for the fall and families’ busy schedules, we are going to try something different for the Coffee and Donut extravaganza. This year we will try a rotating schedule. What this means is that one family will sign up for one of the six Sundays listed. The sign up sheet is posted in the Upper Church Sacristy. Each family will be responsible for: set up before the 9:30AM Mass/serving the coffee and donuts/clean up. If you are interested or have any further questions please call the rectory at 508-875-5959.

Together, we can make this a great parish event!

Upcoming Events & Programs

Looking Ahead to our Fall Mission! Brother Michael Moran will be with us for three evenings October 12, 13 & 14. Each evening’s service will require some help from parishioners. We are looking for people to do a reading each evening, a person to process with the prop needed for that evening’s ritual and on the last evening we need ushers to take up the goodwill mission collection. We will be planning the mission over the summer so it’s never too soon to volunteer! If you are able to help contact: Coordinator of Parish Ministries Karen Mallozzi at [email protected] or 508-875-6009.

Michael Moran, C.P.

Michael Moran, a native of West Springfield, MA, professed his vows as a Brother of the Eastern Province of the Passionist community in 1974. In 1977 he received a Master’s Degree in theology from St. John’s University in New York City, after which he worked in various retreat centers and other ministries of his province. Though largely self-taught, he studied art with August Mosca, a noted Long Island artist, from 1984 to 1989. He attended the Art Students League in Manhattan from 1989 to 1990. One of his specialties is painting icons, translating this ancient art form of the Eastern Christian churches, into contemporary terms. His art can be seen on his web site www.angelstudiostore.com. Brother Michael has also served as the chaplain of the Supportive Care Program of St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City, a program that provides support for people with life threatening illnesses and their caregivers. He also conducts painting classes for senior citizens in New York. A large part of Brother Michael’s ministry is conducting creativity workshops, retreats which focus on meditation and the artistic process, as well as parish mission-retreats.

Treasures from our Tradition

Many marriage customs stand in tension with modern American attitudes and values, notably “giving away the bride,” which is no longer in the Catholic liturgy, and reminds us of a time when marriage was a contract between men (the groom and the bride’s father). A Mexican custom, now approved for use in the United States, has a very different message. An ancient Roman custom called for smashing pieces of gold and silver so that bride and groom could each keep half. This is the origin of today’s Mexican practice of the groom giving thirteen gold coins to the bride, symbolically placing all his worldly goods into her care, and a sign of his unconditional trust. The coins are often given in beautiful gift boxes and are retained as an heirloom. Why thirteen? The standard explanation is that they represent Jesus and the apostles. The priest blesses the coins and pours them into the bride’s cupped hands. Then she entrusts them to the groom, who later pours them back into her hands. This enduring ritual is in such harmony with our tradition’s view of marriage that it is now increasingly performed by English‑speaking Hispanic Catholics at weddings in the United States.

Sacrament of Baptism Before an infant baptism parents must attend a baptismal catechesis class. Classes are held on the first Friday of each month at 7pm in the Rectory Meeting Room. If there is a change due to bad weather parents will be notified. Participants should park in the Rectory parking lot and enter the door on that level. *Dates for baptism are set once the class has been attended and all paperwork is received and complete. Baptisms take place once a month on a Sunday at 2pm. To register for class or to ask a question call 508-875-6009.

Sacrament of Marriage Arrangements should be made with one of the priests at least one year prior to the intended date of marriage so that all requirements can be completed. Please Note: Saturday weddings can be celebrated from 10:00am to 1:00pm at the latest. Sunday weddings can be celebrated from 1:30pm to 4:00pm at the latest.
