Students learned how to draft and redraft before publishing their final product and they came to understand the importance of the drafting process in order to improve their own writing. Year 7 have had an enthusiastic start to their high school life. They studied the concept of ‘Power’ and how it impacts on texts. They also explored the idea of power and culture within ‘The Dreaming’, with a particular focus on Aboriginal poetry. Students also created a Bullying No Way campaign to reinforce the importance of respecting each other. Year 8 began the year studying the timeless classic, ‘Seven Little Australians’, in their Relationships Unit. As their portfolio task, students wrote about a significant family dinner and they created some very funny antecdotes. They also looked at relationships at a global level through the media. Year 9 had a fantastic first term looking at the concept of Fear. Alfred Hitchcock’s thrillers had students sitting on the edge of their seats, despite their initial shock at the black and white film. As a portfolio task, students wrote an alternative beginning or ending for Mark Twain’s ‘A Ghost Story’. Year 10 engaged in testimonies from ‘The Stolen Generation’. They showed great maturity and empathy when listening to personal accounts and gained a deeper understanding of a complex issue. We also explored stories of refugees from around the world as well as in an Australian context. Students learned about the importance of drafting and editing in order to produce their best published work. Welcome from the Principal - Vero Joseph It is with great pleasure that I take on the role of Principal of Crookwell High School. I have always thought of CHS has a wonderful place to teach and learn. I come to Crookwell from Goulburn High School where I was Deputy Principal and where I have lived for 22 years. My teaching background is Science, specifically in the area of Physics. I have four children ranging from 12 to 26 years old and have always been involved in their sport and other activities. I am really looking forward to meeting with students, families and the wider community to get a strong understanding of the needs of our students and the partnerships we can make with our community. I’d like to express my appreciation and gratitude for the hard work put in by Lynda Peters, Anna Robinson and Rebecca Dark who were relieving as Principal, Deputy Principal and Head Teacher respectively throughout Term 1. The school certainly performed outstandingly under their care. Vero Joseph Principal Japan - April School Holidays On Tuesday 24th April, 11 students, three parents and two teachers arrived back at Sydney International Airport from their 10 day tour of Japan. It was an amazing trip with the highlights being Tokyo Disneyland, Universal Studios, zip-lining at the base of Mt Fuji and navigating the train networks including the famous Bullet Train. It was a great experience for all involved and we returned home having collected a lifetime of memories. Thank you to the wonderful student travellers who as usual, carried themselves with maturity, responsibility and respect. Lauren Waite Japanese Teacher

Year 11 immersed themselves into their new role as seniors. A study of John Steinback’s ‘Of Mice and Men’, was undertaken with enthusiasm. Year 12 are fast approaching the midway mark of their final year. Their responsible and mature behaviour during their exams was remarkable, a true reflection of the positive spirit of Crookwell High and a credit to the community. This term Year 12 will be undertaking their second last module. Advance English will be studying William Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ and Standard English will be exploring Mark Haddon’s ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’. PDHPE NewsIn the last week of Term 1 the Year 11 PDHPE class had a visit from ex-Crookwell High student, Kimberly Laverty. She spoke about her experiences since leaving high school. These included trying to improve health outcomes in a remote indigenous community in Western Australia, working with women suffering from domestic voilence in Canberra and also working with the RSPCA. Kim’s experiences closely relate to the PDHPE Syllabus.
