FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT First Reading: Deuteronomy 26:4-10 Moses discusses the power God has displayed in freeing his people from oppression and leading them to a rich land. He tells the people that they should make offerings to God to show their gratitude, then celebrate over the great things he has given them. Second Reading: Romans 10:8-13 Paul tells us that if we proclaim, "Jesus is Lord" and truly believe that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved. For God shows his mercy toward everyone who calls upon his name.

Gospel: Luke 4:1-13 Jesus fasted in the desert for forty days, then Satan ap-peared to him and tempted him to turn stone into bread. After Jesus refused, Satan promised him great powers if Jesus would worship him. Jesus replied that he would worship God and no one else. Then Satan tried to per-suade Jesus to put God to the test, but again Jesus re-sisted his temptation.

Return the cross to that same Mass the following week and keep the prayer materials. Pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life, especially from our parishes!

CROSS CATHOLIC OUTREACH Father Farrell E. “Mac” McLaughlin of Cross Catholic Outreach will be visiting our parishes next weekend to speak at all the Masses on behalf of the poor in devel-oping countries. Cross Catholic Outreach was founded to create a meaningful link between parishes in Amer-ica and the priests and nuns working in the Church overseas in the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Central and South America.

Have you decided what to give up this Lent? Take the time now to think about what you might give up this year. Is it something you enjoy that you want to sacri-fice for a while, like your daily latte? Or is it a bad habit you want to conquer, like running in late to meetings with co-workers? Or perhaps you want to turn your cell phone off for a few hours each day and not let it distract you from the loved ones you are with in real time? Find some-thing that works for you, and whatever it is, may it help you to turn towards God in this holy season of Lent. Some ideas to help you with Lenten resolutions: GIVE UP grumbling! Instead, "In everything give thanks." Constructive criticism is OK, but "moaning, groaning, and complaining" are not Christian disciplines. GIVE UP 10 to 15 minutes in bed! Instead, use that time in prayer, Bible study and personal devotion. GIVE UP looking at other people's worst points. Instead concentrate on their best points. We all have faults. It is a lot easier to have people overlook our shortcomings when we overlook theirs first. GIVE UP speaking unkindly. Instead, let your speech be generous and understanding. It costs so little to say something kind and uplifting. Why not check that sharp tongue at the door? GIVE UP your hatred of anyone or anything! Instead, learn the discipline of love. "Love covers a multitude of sins." GIVE UP your worries and anxieties! Instead, trust God with them. Anxiety is spending emotional energy on something we can do nothing about: like tomorrow! Live today and let God's grace be sufficient. GIVE UP TV one evening a week! Instead, visit some lonely or sick person. There are those who are isolated by illness or age. Why isolate yourself in front of the "tube?" Give someone a precious gift: your time! GIVE UP buying anything but essentials for yourself! In-stead, give the money to God. The money you would spend on the luxuries could help someone meet basic needs. We are called to be stewards of God's riches, not consumers. GIVE UP judging by appearances and by the standard of the world! Instead, learn to give up yourself to God. There is only one who has the right to judge, Jesus Christ. God Bless! DAMAGE FROM NATIONAL GRID POWER SURGE

As some of you already know, St. Theresa Church re-ceived substantial damage due to a National Grid power surge on January 12th. National Grid immediately came out and replaced parts that had corroded on the pole on Stafford Road. These worn parts allowed for the power surge that caused all the damage. The burner control in one of the boilers needed to be replaced. The fire alarm box that relays a signal to the fire department was heavily damaged. The entire sound system in the church, parish hall and the system used on the grounds during the feast were completely destroyed. The cost to replace all items is $14,804.00 to date. We have submitted claims for the damage to National Grid as well as our Diocesan Insur-ance and expect to be completely reimbursed. I feel I must add that the staff from the Tiverton Fire De-partment has been very helpful and professional through-out this time. The fire box kept sending false signals to the fire station over 3 days. Whether it was day or night the Fire Department always came out to check the build-ing. Thank you Chief Lamb and your department.
