A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR

One of the best things my parents ever did for me and my older brother and younger brother was to enroll us in a Catholic school. We began our elementary education in a public school but were transferred when going into the 3RD, 5TH and 7TH grades to Corpus Christi School on Lincoln Avenue in the East End. All three of us thrived there and then continued our high school education at Central Catholic in Oakland. What a gift our mother and father gave us.

Still, today, parents choose to send their child(ren) to a Catholic school, including Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Academy, located in the school building of Saint Scholastica Parish in Aspinwall. What a wise choice it is and I applaud parents everywhere who are willing to make the sacrifices required. CDTCA has an excellent reputation and rightfully so. Under the leadership of the principal, Mr. Mark Grgurich, and its dedicated faculty and staff, Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Academy provides an education for our young people enrolled that far exceeds its competition.

The sacrifice of which I speak is one that impacts the wallet for everyone. The operation of CDTCA comes at some considerable expense. Thus the annual cost of tuition for each student, the ongoing need of fund-raising, and a subsidy that comes from each of the four parishes in the Lower Allegheny Valley. These three sources of revenue, plus a small subsidy from the Diocese of Pittsburgh, account for the annual school budget. For your information the subsidy from the four parishes is calculated at $219,000.00 for the coming 2020-2021 school year. That figure is divided based on the number of students who attend CDTCA and claim registration in one of the four parishes. Thus the breakdown of the subsidy looks like this:

Saint Joseph Parish $54,000

Saint Juan Diego Parish $35,000

Saint Padre Pio Parish $35,000

Saint Scholastica Parish $95,000

A Catholic school education pays dividends that last a lifetime. For so many of us who are beneficiaries of such an experience, we are grateful. For today's students, they are blessed. May the Lord continue to inspire the great effort put forth by parents, grandparents, and entire parish communities who work so hard and show such generosity in assuring that Catholic schools continue.

A Gentle Reminder to all those who serve at the altar in each of our six churches in the Lower Allegheny Valley grouping of parishes as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister or Altar Server. The priest relies on your presence in proclaiming the Word of the Lord, helping with the distribution of Holy Communion, and assisting with the sacred vessels. Please pay careful attention to your ministry schedule and make every effort to be in attendance at the Mass for which you are scheduled. If you cannot be, kindly get a substitute.

The Pastoral Council of the LAV will meet on Wednesday, January 29TH, beginning at 7:00 pm in the social hall of Saint Edward Church in Blawnox. This will be the third meeting of the newly organized Pastoral Council and they will continue their discussion about the eventual merger of the four parishes of Saint Joseph, Saint Juan Diego, Saint Padre Pio and Saint Scholastica. The members of the Pastoral Council are: Elaine DuVall, Joan Miller, Jimmy Smerdell and Ben Urso (Saint Joseph Parish); Jim Hastings, Patty Markelewicz, Karen Pastor and Corrado Riccelli (Saint Juan Diego Parish); Don DiGirolamo, Maria Durrant, Maureen Frank and Tom Lieb (Saint Padre Pio Parish); Mary Benckart, Tom Pohl, Joanne Saunders and Jojo Veltri (Saint Scholastica Parish).

Speaking of Merger: In place of the homily Fr . Dale DeNinno will address the topic of parish merger at all the Masses in our churches over the course of three weekends, beginning January 25-26 and continuing February 1-2 and February 8-9.

Many of our parents, siblings, spouses, children, and friends are among the approximately 75% of U.S. Catholics who are absent from the Eucharistic feast. The New Evangelization places a special emphasis on welcoming them back to the Lord's Table, because they are greatly missed and needed to build up the Body of Christ. All are welcome to join us Saturday, February 1, 10 am in the Parish Hall.

LAV Sight & Sound and Padre Pio Center Tour: Join us on May 12 and 13 for a trip to the Sight & Sound Millennium Theatre in Lancaster County for the spectacular new show, Queen Esther. Forty- Two Years and Counting! On Tuesday, January 28TH I will celebrate the 42ND anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood. It was a cold wintry day in 1978 at Saint Augustine Church in Lawrenceville that Bishop Vincent Leonard ordained me and two classmates (Fr. Bill Henn and Fr. John Pavlik). The years since have been amazing in the experiences and blessings that I have known. My list of assignments will give you some idea of how I've spent the past 42 years:

1) Vocation Director for the Capuchin Friars: 1978-1981

2) Chaplain at Saint Margaret Hospital: 1981-1984

3) Parochial Vicar at Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in Pleasant Hills: 1984-1989

4) Chaplain at Mercy Hospital: 1989-1996

5) Pastor of Immaculate Conception-Saint Joseph Parish in Bloomfield: 1996-2005

6) Pastor of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in Pleasant Hills: 2005-2018

7) Pastor/Administrator of the Lower Allegheny Valley Grouping of Parishes: 2018 to the present

How good God is to me. Please pray that the Lord will continue to bless me with good health and the energy to serve Him and His holy people for many years to come.

12 Steps Reflections: John 4:4-42 is the story of the Samaritan woman at the well. I believe this provides us with an opportunity to reflect on all 12 steps of recovery. Step One: “We admitted we were powerless over addiction – that our lives had become unmanageable.”

In this Scripture, we encounter a woman from Samaria who came alone to the well to draw water. The fact that she is alone tells us a great deal about her life. Usually, the women of the village came as a group for safety to draw water from the well. But this woman came alone. She encounters Jesus, who is sitting by the well. Remember, when Jesus is seated, he is about to give a teaching because when Rabbis taught, they were seated. Jesus says to her “Give me a drink.”

All of this is very provocative. A woman alone. A Jew in Samaria. A Rabbi talking to not just a woman when both are alone, but also a Samaritan. The woman responds, “How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?” Later on in this text, Jesus asks the women to call her husband. She responds, “I do not have a husband.” This is her truth! Her reality.

What does all of this have to do with the First Step? “Powerlessness.” This woman is a Samaritan. This is her truth. She is powerless over this reality. She knows, accepts, and embraces this reality.

For those suffering addiction, in their reality, their truth, they are powerless over this truth. Embracing your powerlessness, your truth, is the first step in recovery. My sponsor told me that accepting powerlessness is the very foundation upon which recovery is built. Powerlessness is not helplessness. Helplessness is giving up on hope. Powerlessness is accepting our truth and embracing hope in the midst of our struggle.

Our lives have become unmanageable. In the text, Jesus asks the woman to call her husband. She says I have no husband. In her culture, this fact would make her an outcast and that would be the reason that she is at the well alone. Being a Samaritan, she is powerless over this fact. Being unmarried testifies that her life is unmanageable for a person in her time, culture, and gender. She can’t change her truth, but she can begin to manage her life.

“We admitted we were powerless over our addiction.” Recovery begins when this truth, this reality is honestly accepted. Any hope of recovery can only begin when we accept and embrace our reality, our truth — that we are powerless over our addiction. “Our lives have become unmanageable.” We accept that as a result of the truth of our addiction, life has become unmanageable; and only in truly, honestly believing in our powerlessness, can we begin to work on manageability in our life. Now recovery can begin and we can move on to Step Two: “Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.”

These presentations on the 12 steps will be held every month on the first Thursday at 7:00 p.m. and on the third Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in Madonna of Jerusalem Church. Everyone is invited and welcome to attend. Fr. Mike
