Dear Parents and Members of our Sacred Heart School community,

Today we marked ‘Day for Daniel’ – not in any morbid or scary way, but as a day when we remember the incidents of thirteen years ago, through the lens of child-safety. Our message to the children today was one of keeping ourselves safe. As a school we hold, as one of the aspects of school life, the right of every member of the school to be in a safe place on the premises and to act safely at all times. The issue of safety has been raised with me in various ways over this week. For one child, it was an issue of safe play in the playground when it was unsupervised after school. For a mother, it was about her children’s safety when they are at school and when they travel home. On another front, it was the need to respond to the safety of our grounds as a result of an accident involving a Year 1 boy - in another school - whereby he sustained a bleed on the brain due to a safety issue at his school. As adults, we play a major role in keeping our children safe. This is not to say that we need to keep them wrapped in cotton wool so they never explore the world and never risk making a mistake. Rather, it’s about ensuring the risk they take is calculated, manageable, non-life threatening, and one they’ll survive.

For us at Sacred Heart safety is about:

Ensuring every child has a safety plan for the times they feel at risk, especially for those who walk or ride home from school, or for when they are at the shops. It’s not assuming that ‘they’ll know what to do’, but being explicit with them about how to put themselves into a safe place if ever they feel threatened;

Ensuring all children have a safety network upon which to draw should they need to tell someone something that has scared or is scaring them;

Having no child dropped at school before 8am as they are unsupervised and cannot be here on the grounds before then (OSHC can fill this void for you);

Families exiting the school grounds by 3pm so that ancillary Staff can undertake their roles and play equipment is vacated;

Ensuring that our children are well supervised on the school playground whenever they use it;

Ensuring all adults who volunteer within our school have undergone the Volunteer’s induction each year;

All school visitors (including parents) ‘signing-in’ at the School Administration should they enter the grounds during the school day;

Not using the Church carpark due to the dangers it presents to our children; and

Persistently supervising our children when using technology to ensure cyber-safe practices are being engaged.

There is so much we can do as adults to assist our children to be safe without smothering them. Let us use this day to focus on child safety and the small acts we can do to make our environment the best it can be for them.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Do not look the other way; Do not hesitate. Recognise that the world is hungry for action, not words. Act with courage and vision.

-Nelson Mandela

WE DID IT! Yesterday we (that is, our Validation Team of Gerald Shegog, Karen Schlort and Maureen Cullip did on our behalf) presented the school’s Religious Education program for verification and validation. The program is put under the scrutiny of teams from 3 of our other schools as well as one of the Brisbane Catholic Education religious education officers. To our great delight the Sacred Heart Religious Education program passed their scrutiny and, with a few recommendations of areas for growth in the year ahead, has been officially validated. Congratulations especially to Gerald, Maureen and Karen as well as the whole team of teachers who team and plan in Religious Education for a job well-done. CONGRATS & PRAYERS Congratulations to the Barclay family (Rebekah and Simon with Chelsea in Year 3) on the safe arrival of baby Thomas during the week. Great news. Unfortunately, Thomas has had a few complications as he begins life in this big wide world, so your prayers would be greatly appreciated as he returns to full health. YEAR 6 LEADERSHIP 2017 – THE JOURNEY BEGINS During the week ahead, the formal journey for leadership positions for next year will take place. I know our young ladies are eager to take over the reins and make a difference within our community. Wednesday and Thursday are the two big days and their parents are very welcome to join us at 10am on Thursday to hear the ‘speech-component’ for nomination to a position. My best wishes to Year 5 as they consider their leadership for the new year. A 'NO HOMEWORK SCHOOL'? NOT HERE. There is a mantra being bandied around that Sacred Heart is a ‘no homework’ school – but this is not the case at all. When our School Board developed in consultation with the Staff and Parent communities the Sacred Heart Homework Statement -which is on the Parent Portal - they took into account the latest in educational research regarding activities that schools have children do. Our Homework Statement focuses on the importance of regular (daily) reading in a child’s life and holds this to be of prime importance. The Statement goes further to suggest ways of enhancing the learning at school with activities at home to reinforce and extend the learning, and to place it in a context of life. What we need to develop further are strategies to inform parents as to the particular ‘work’ being conducted within their child’s classroom. To this end, I am in the process of writing ‘A Parent’s Guide to Supporting your Child’s Learning at home’ - a document I anticipate will be ready to start the new school year. If you ask ‘Are we doing traditional homework at Sacred Heart?’, then your answer is rightfully ‘No’. However, we are looking at providing the best learning for your child and ways to impact their learning in a positive way. P & F EXECUTIVE – POSITIONS VACANT A reminder that the following positions on our P & F executive for 2017 remain unfilled. We really need your support to fill these positions to allow our P & F to function well for the new year. Please consider your availability for the following:

PARENT CONSULTATION RE CLASS GROUPINGS 2017 The week ahead is Week 3 of 3 - the final week of the consultation period. My thanks to those parents who have already entered into a conversation with their child’s teacher around this topic. Pre-term 4 School Administration team determine staffing allocation for the school through the

use of the Brisbane Catholic Education Staffing Schedule. COMPLETED Term 4 Wk 2 School staff meeting to discuss possible class groupings scenarios for

the following school year.

Parent meeting to discuss possible class groupings scenarios for the following school year. NOT REQUIRED

Term 4 Wk 3 Class groupings for the following school year determined by School

Principal and announced. COMPLETED This coming week is Term 4, Week 5

Term 4 Wk 3 – 5 If parents have considerations which they would like to express to inform the school’s decision regarding their child’s class placement for the following school year (eg Social issues we need to be aware of, or family issues which you would like us to consider in allocating your child’s class) then a meeting should be arranged with their child’s present teacher during this period. At the end of Week 5 this process is closed.

Teachers will be unable to give parents any undertaking or guarantee of where children will be placed but will use the information provided as part of the process of making a professional judgement about the class groupings.

Our aim is to utilise the professional judgement of teachers regarding which children work best together and which teacher will bring out the best for each child for the following year. The teachers will utilise their professional skills and their working knowledge of the children as academic and social beings to determine their best placement.

Term 4 Wk 6 Allocation of children to classes is complete and announced. Class teachers announced for the following school year. Changes will only be made to these lists after they are announced in the event of human error on our behalf.

Dear Parents / Caregivers My thanks to the families who attended our Family/School/Parish Partnerships Mass last Sunday evening. The aim of occasions like this, is to gather that sense of community between the school and the Parish. We believe that families, Catholic schools and parishes work together as partners in the spiritual formation and education of children and young people. This opportunity is provided once a term and is an invitation for all families in the school.

Next Thursday morning our Year 3 – 6 students will attend a school Mass commencing at 9:00am. This is not only for the students and the staff, but also for parents and caregivers. I look forward to seeing you there to join in the celebration. The Spiritual Works of Mercy The Spiritual Works of Mercy have long been a part of the Christian tradition, appearing in the works of theologians and spiritual writers throughout history. Just as Jesus attended to the spiritual well-being of those he ministered to, these Spiritual Works of Mercy guide us to "help our neighbour in their spiritual needs." We continue the seven Spiritual Works of Mercy this week which is focused on

FORGIVING INJURIES

Forgiving others is difficult at times because we do not have God's limitless mercy and compassion. But Jesus teaches us that we should forgive as God forgives, relying on him to help us show others the mercy of God

Let go of grudges

Saying sorry is something we learn as kids, but how often do we really mean it? Forgiveness transforms hearts and lives

Participate in the Sacrament of Penance

Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet “…we are called – to act, to love, to serve, to walk – to be a light for others and a sign of hope…The first reading from the Prophet Isaiah takes up this theme with some of the most beautiful words to be found in the Scriptures: do not be afraid, I have called you by your name, you are mine, I will be with you”.

Maroon This term in 2M we have been have been focusing on the concept of

Chemical Sciences and have been experimenting with different

materials to be combined for a particular purpose. The students have

enjoyed making chocolate crackles, slime, lava lamps and mixing

water, oil and detergent together to record the results. We know that

scientists make predictions, complete the experiment and then

observe their findings. So we have been using this process of predict,

experiment and observe for all of our experiments.

“My favourite thing in science was when we made chocolate

crackles” Amelia.

“The experiment that I enjoyed the most was making Slime” Sienna.

“I liked making the lava lamps,” Oliver.

“We think the best experiment was making Slime” Abbey and Brock.

Today I offer the following on PASSWORDS, SOCIAL SKILLS and CYBER SECURITY. This information was provided by the Courier Mail on Wednesday October 12th 2016.

“Parents should friend their children on Facebook and ask for the passwords to their social media accounts”, according to a cyber safety expert.

Tricia Munn of Eyes Open Social Media, says parents needed to improve their social media savviness to keep their kids and teenagers safe online. Parents need to be getting on the social networks that their children are on and they need to know their way around them. Ms Munn believes:

“parents are entitled to know their children’s social media passwords at least until they turn 16.”

Ms Munn said it was important for parents to ensure the people their children connected with online were people known to them in real life.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR KIDS SAFE

follow your child’s social media accounts;

demand your child’s social media passwords;

create a social media contract with your child, governing the rules for appropriate use;

ensure your child knows every person they are friends with online;

check the privacy settings on your child’s social media accounts;

know how to disable location services on your child’s device;

request your child us a non-identifying profile picture, like a photo of their don of apps they use;

keep devices and smartphones in common areas;

be guided by age restrictions on social medial sites.

I hope you find the information I have given these past three weeks helpful in your discussions with your child/children.

Enjoy your week. Teresa.

The younger, the better?

I have noticed the children in younger grades are very good

at parroting my Japanese pronunciation, sometimes my

English pronunciation, too. :)

Experts say that children who learn a language before their teenage years are more likely than

older learners to achieve native-like pronunciation.

I started learning English in Year 8 at middle school from a Japanese

teacher. I remember learning my first sentence "This is a pen" from him who

had a very strong Japanese accent. I don't mean to blame him for my

Japanese accent, but no matter how hard I try to get rid of my Japanese

accent, I just can't master pronunciation like a native speaker.

Preschool years are vital years as the foundations for thinking, language, vision, attitudes,

aptitudes and other characteristics are laid down. For children up to Age 12, their brain is like

a super sponge. It would be a waste not to use a child's natural ability to learn a foreign language

during their most vital years. By the time a student reaches high school the optimum learning

period has passed.

Young children can learn a foreign language by listening, seeing, imitating, and practicing, so I

teach the children lots of Japanese songs, words and phrases with actions.

The more fun the children have, the better they learn a foreign language.

Happy learning Japanese.

Shoko Thompson (Japanese Teacher)
