A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT...
Hi Everyone,
HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Here is to a great new year. The Working Dog Com‐mi ee has already met and has been working on their calendar. The Board will be working on the overall calendar at the beginning of February. If there is an event you would like to a end, and think other Newf owners would also en‐joy, please let one of the Board mem‐bers know. You could even chair the event. Rescue has already been busy this year. If you would like to be a foster home, please let Karrie know at [email protected]. People are s ll losing their homes, ge ng divorced, and having to give up their Newfound‐lands. Karrie works really hard at finding great foster homes. O en, our foster homes fail fostering and adopt. Our members are a great group of people. Karrie recently asked for trans‐porta on help, and several volunteers stepped forward. If you think you might want to help Rescue, the Working Dog Commi ee, the Conforma on Show people, or Chair a fun event, let one of the Board members know. It's a perfect me to speak up, since we will be work‐
ing on the club calendar. I hope everyone has a great new year!

the park, as well as several bridges, ponds and all kinds of waterfowl including pea‐cocks. Park management decided to keep our group in the quieter back end of the park. This worked out great for obedience and the maneuvering course.
The freight haul was not as chal‐lenging as some of our other test sites. Nevertheless, it provided all the elements required, including a variety of surfaces, hills and gentle slopes. Due to the cold weather, not too many families ventured out to the park on dra day. This made for a pre y uneven ul freight haul with few distrac ons. We did come across quite a few dogs which offered a distrac on and a challenge.
We had a full test with twelve en‐trants and two on the alternate list. Two exhibitors decided to withdraw, making it possible for the two alternates to get a shot at requalifying their dogs. What made it especially fun was the fact that we had several club members who were fairly new to the sport of dra work. Even though they did not pass, they showed wonderful sportsmanship, and the bond between them and their Newfs was evident. They will surely get their tle next spring. All but one dog passed basic control, but unfortu‐nately by the end of the maneuvering course, only four had their DD hopes alive. One of those dogs sadly thought that try‐ing to play with other dogs during the freight haul was part of the test and promptly failed. It was a shame as the dog

and the handler truly displayed great teamwork.
Our judges, John Pearson and Karrie Cook, were very easy to work with. They took their me with the exhibitors to make sure everyone understood what was expected and to answer all of their ques‐ons. Both were very pa ent and very
pleasant. We appreciate their help and guidance in making our test fair and a big success. To that end, I’d like to men on that all of our stewards did a great job. The stewards are the backbone of any test and, without them, we wouldn’t be able to hold a test. Thanks so very much to all for your par cipa on. I would like to thank everyone who helped in any way to make this a smooth running event once again. Chuck Zimmer blew everyone away with his barbecue skills for the second year in a row. He even served up bacon and eggs for breakfast. Is this becoming a trend in our club now? We would not say no to it!
Due to the cold, many of our Newfs were s ll feeling quite frisky at the end of the day. Their handlers not so much. It was a long day that started at 7am in freezing temperatures—quite frigid by Southern California standards. In spite of it all, eve‐ryone seemed to have really enjoyed themselves.

Bob and Dianne Campbell are the lucky owners of Molly, a purebred female Newf, who is now 7 months. They learned about her through Karrie Cook and SCNRC. The prior owners were looking to re‐home her when they found out they were allergic to dogs
Over the last 40 years, Bob has had 2 purebred New‐foundlands and 2 Saint Bernards.
Before Molly, the couple’s most recent companions were a Newf/Lab mix named Ebony (RIP 2010), and a purebred Labrador named Annie (RIP 2011).

Southern California Special Olympics 2014 Invitational Summer Games June 6-8, 2014 University of Southern California
LA2015's sister organization, Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC), stages Southern California's Summer Games every year. But the summer of 2014 is special! It's the perfect opportunity to stage an expanded Summer Games that will help prepare for 2015's World Games.
2000 athletes and coaches (1500 from Southern Cal and 500 from international lo-cations) will take part this year and we have been asked to participate. Over the years our Newfys have become a big part of many athletes’ experience and we need you to make this happen again. Even if you’ve never volunteered before, we need you.

NCSC AWARDS RULES & ELIGIBILITY:
The annual awards will be based on all officially confirmed results listed in the American chairperson for the awards he/she feels have been earned. Winners shall be selected from among the applicants only Kennel Club Gaze e from January through December, or in the case of parent club tles, official confirma on must be received by the awards deadline.
The applicant for each award must be a General Member in good standing of the Newfoundland Club of Southern Califor‐nia at the me the award is earned.
All awards shall be claimed at the first eligible awards presenta on following official confirma on of eligibility.
It is the responsibility of the applicant for each award to supply all the informa on necessary to confirm eligibility in the AKC Gaze e. All tles confirmed by the AKC Gaze e shall require a photocopy of the official confirma on.
It shall be the responsibility of each individual club member to make an applica on to the awards
Only one mug will be given per dog. The owner of any dog receiving addi onal tles must return the mug for addi onal engraving. A co‐owner, who meets the eligibility requirements, may purchase an addi onal mug. Proof of ownership may be required.

· CHAMPIONSHIPS: Any eligible dog that has earned an AKC and/or foreign confirma on tle.
· OBEDIENCE TITLES: Any eligible dog that has earned an AKC and/or foreign obedience tle, including tracking tles.
· CANINE GOOD CITIZEN: Any eligible dog who has earned a CGC tle.
· NCA TITLES: Any eligible dog that has earned a parent club tle (Water, Dra , Versa lity, ROM).
· TOP OBEDIENCE DOG COMPLETING A DEGREE: For the dog with the highest average of three qualifying scores, which
resulted in the comple on of an AKC obedience tle.

· BREEDER AWARD: To the breeder of any eligible dog that has earned an AKC or NCA tle.

Rescue is so lucky to have such wonderful Sweethearts! Our supporters do what they can - whether it is to transport, groom, foster, donate or adopt. Each component is essential to the program! You’ve already read about Rene Romero’s garage sale late last Fall; we want to thank her for her generosity, and also thank all those that donated goods to sell along with the volunteers who set up, sold, and cleaned up afterward.
For many years we have been very appreciative of generous gifts from the Carl Judd Foundation. This foundation supports grassroots rescue groups. This year we were astounded by their largest gift ever – a check for $3,000! Sharyn Jeter also makes an annual end of year donation. And if you’ve seen how often she sports her Newfy Logo Wear, you know she supports us all year long with apparel sales! Thanks to our Ralphs and Food 4 Less shoppers we get a quarterly check from Kroger. The Trudell/Pincus family signed up for auto payment with their bank, and they send us money every payday.
Peter Schran, the NCSC Treasurer received a few more donations with Club dues; thank you to Apple Paopuka, Gloria Blatti, and Rick & Eileen Matthews. The Maltby family donated in honor of their new girl Bella. Mary Killian made a donation in memory of Chester and Agapi, her veterinarian Dr. Gary Simpson, and all her Newfy friends. Pamela Forney donated in memory of Scout Shapiro, foster dog Missy and Sam Forney – “they have touched our hearts forever – mak-ing us better humans.” Kathy Mitchell donated in memory of Sebastian Barcus/Rothwell/Schran, Abbey Banda and Chester Zimmer.
We are sorry to report that former Rescue Finn has died. He is the dog that came to rescue with his own “Hannibal Lechter” style muz-zle, and nearly a zillion foxtails imbedded all over his body. Finn got lucky twice! First, he was lovingly fostered and nursed back to health by Debra Mohr, and then adopted by the Oeschel family. They took won-derful care of him and loved him deeply in spite of some quirks and idio-syncrasies that he never quite overcame. They spent countless hours getting him used to riding in the car, exposed him to new situations and people, and thought he was the most majestic animal they’d ever owned.
We are starting to have another big wave of dogs entering the Rescue program. Many have arrived in terrible physical condition but with the great Newfy temperament that made us all fall in love with the breed. Please help in whatever way you can. As always, we are especial-ly in need of foster homes.
Nana/Nellie – ADOPTED! We are happy to report that this sweet girl received a clean bill of health and has been adopted by Elliot Gilder and Michele Vertucci. She and Khaya have be‐come quite a ached, and Elliot and Michele couldn’t part with her. They have had a number of rescued Newfs over the years, and Nellie will have a great life with them. We remain hopeful that her prior owner will relinquish his male Newfoundland to us in the near future so that we can find the type of home that he deserves, as well.

Betsy – ADOPTED! Betsy is a nearly six year‐old female relinquished by her owners who felt she was too much to handle along with their two young children. She’d been living in a run outside with the in‐laws who described her as “wild” and “too energe c.” Theresa Kaplan made the trek to pick her up, and she and her husband Bob fostered her un l a forever home could be found. Although appearing younger than her age, she se led in easily in the house, had no urinary accidents, and proved to be a quick learner. Betsy has been adopted by the Marlow Family of Hun ngton Beach. Russ and Vicki, their four boys and a friend all drove up in their huge family van, fell instantly in love with Betsy, and took her home. A er soaking up a en on from them for several hours, she finally decided to curl up at Vicki’s feet and fall asleep. We are hopeful that the Marlow Family will join the NCSC and bring Betsy to some fun ac vi es in the near future. She is a very sweet girl with the perfect Newfy temperament.
Cole – ADOPTED! This nine year‐old male went through two different rescues before he came to us. A concerned neighbor had witnessed Cole ed up outside without adequate food, water or shelter and threatened to call the authori es if the owner didn’t give him up. She then turned him over to an all‐breed rescue who contacted Alison Eastwood of Eastwood Ranch Founda on. Alison took him in as a favor to the friend, had him treated at her veterinarian and contacted us to see if we could arrange foster care for him. She was extremely kind in covering his veterinary and medica on expenses for us. New members Chris and Mary Sheehan responded to our e‐mail plea and offered to foster this boy. He came in with the usual eye, ear, and skin infec ons, is missing tons of fur, and needs to gain about twenty pounds. Chris and Mary have been providing him with medicated baths and following through with his medica on regime. He is a super sweet boy and gets along great with their li le Chihuahua. We are happy to report that, as o en happens, Chris and Mary have decided to give Cole a forever home. Thank you so much to them for volunteering to foster and for adop ng a difficult‐to‐place Newf!
Jeffrey – This is the male that was found as a stray with the Labrador Retriever everyone was e‐mailed about. Rescue advised the Good Sa‐maritan to take the dogs to his local shelter so that they could be claimed by the owner if they’d go en scared and ran out of the yard on New Year’s Eve. He let the shelter staff know that he would adopt them, and also let them know that Newf Rescue would take the Newf. We also contacted and spoke with shelter personnel. The dogs were not claimed within the requisite me, and the shelter turned Jeffrey, named in honor of the Good Samaritan, over to rescue. We believe the Labrador Retriever was adopted by Jeffrey’s vet. Terry Shea and his daughter picked Jeffrey up at the shelter and transported him to Apple Paopuka for short‐term fostering. Apple impressed Dr. Mabley by work‐
ing wonders on Jeffrey’s eyes, ears and skin over the several days that she had him. He is now being fostered by Debra Mohr where he is con nuing to receive plenty of a en on and tender loving care. Although it appears likely that the two dogs were dumped, we believe that turning them in to the shelter for the required wai ng me is the legal and right thing to do. Even well‐loved and cared for dogs can get out by accident, and the first place a distraught owner is going to look is their local shelter. Should you find a lost dog, the best thing to do is to take it to the closest shelter and list yourself as first hold. If the dog has not been claimed a er the wai ng period, you will be the first person eligible to adopt the dog.

Newfoundland Club of Southern California Annual Working Dog Committee Meeting
Held at the City of Angels Veterinary Specialty Center, Culver City
Treasurer, Peter Schran, went through all of the working events for 2013 and informed us where we did well financially and where the club could improve. This included boat expenses and repairs, storage fees, insur-ance, judges expenses, hospitality and gas. On the plus side, we did really well with the dog wash, the water test raffle and water test entrance fees. The committee discussed the possibility of raising the entrance fees to $45.00 for working event tests. Most clubs have gone up and it was brought up that Northern California charges $45.00 for their events.
The Dog Wash was very successful and we need to consider doing two a year, but in different locations. It was discussed that we could do one at Peter and Debby’s and possibly one at Sharyn’s.
In regard to raffles, we need to be careful not to have too many things going on at once so that we aren’t com-peting with each other for raffle income. It should be brought to the chairperson’s attention before adding more than one raffle.
Peter also brought up the cost of the catalogs for our working events. Currently, it costs more for color ads. Many ideas were brought to the table regarding cutting the costs of the catalog. Some thought booklet size might be a good idea or just go to black and white. The most popular idea was for the club to buy its own printer and print our own catalogs. The initial cost would be high due to the cost of the printer and supplies but, over time it would prove to be cost effective. We discussed increasing the price of ads to $20.00 to offset the cost. For the spring test, it will be $15.00 and it will be in color. Erin will check with her dad and see what he thinks about printers for the club.
All of these issues will be brought up at the next board meeting to be discussed and approved.
Proposed Draft Practice Dates:
The following are the proposed dates and sites for draft practice. Any of these locations can be changed de-pending on who is able to make the practice. The practice start time will be 9:00 a.m.

Laurie brought up the idea about having one person at each practice to help anyone who needs help. This person would not be working a dog. They would only be there to help new people get started and to help ex-perienced people with any issues that they are having prior to a draft test. Shannon committed to be this per-son on the 2/16/13 date. Laurie will update when she knows who will be at each practice.
Laurie also brought up the need for a draft seminar. Possibly in May for new people interested in drafting with

their dog. This will be brought up at the board meeting for discussion.
Karrie will be sending out an all club e-mail to inform members of upcoming practices and who to contact for infor-mation.
Spring Draft Test:

Melanie reported that the park permit has been granted, but we still need to get our proof of insurance to the park. Celia will send that information to the park. The judges’ gifts and trophies are done. The trophies for the entrants will be specific for each dog. Judge Andre Lapeyre’s airfare was less than expected and Judge Rick Humphries has not gotten back to us to let us know if he will be flying or driving down for the test. Melanie also reported that fundraisers for the draft test have done really well.
There has been a change to the Chief Steward for the test and that person will now be Kim Conley. The test will be a picnic theme. The club will supply the food and we are asking for volunteers to provide sides such as chips and desserts.
The premium list has gone out but, it’s not on the website yet.
Water Test, Summer 2014:

NCNC will not be having a July 2014 test, but they will be having a water test on September 6-7, 2014. The Portu-guese Water Dog Club will be doing their test at Castaic on 9/7/2014.

Please note that these dates have not been submitted to Lake Castaic at this time. The following dates are the ones for which we will be asking Lake Castaic for approval. Lake Castaic will inform us as to which dates they will be giving us.

Pirates Cove:

Celia and Debby will be going out in February to check out this site for a possible “Newfie Weekend of Water Training.” This site is near Needles, so it really can’t be any later than April due to the heat. They have RVs on site that sleep six that we can rent. We aren’t sure if this will be a workable site for us. Debby and Celia will let us know after they have visited the area.
Water Work Seminar:
This will be determined once a few items have been worked out. We discussed inviting Lori Littleford down to do a two day seminar for water training. We are hoping to do it in May, however we will have to wait for date approval from Lake Castaic before confirming the seminar. We ideally would like to do it on May 17 -18, 2014. If all works out, the cost for the seminar would be $60.00 for two days and $30.00 for one day.

A brief discussion took place regarding our Newfie Fun Days. It was decided that it would be brought up and discussed at the next board meeting. The board will determine when and where these events will take place.

The meeting for 2015 will take place on January 11, 2015. Time and location will be determined when we get closer to the date.
