STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - THE NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Most parishioners at St. Augustine’s may not know his, but this weekend is a very special and joyous occasion. It is the end of the summer B and C semesters and graduation for UF and Santa Fe College. Several Catholic Gators and Catholic Saints are graduating. Congratulations to you, and may God bless you as you move forward in your lives. Please remember the parish and student center when your education here ena-bles you to pay it backwards and provide some financial support.

This is what I, as a faculty member of UF, treasure in our community – the constant introduction, growth, and renewal of young people passing through our lives. Sure, it is sad to see our friends, whom we have grown to know and love, move on, but like proud parents, it is pure joy and blessing to have been a part of their lives here and to hopefully have some positive impact on their faith journey. This is what our parish and student center are all about. This is our mission – to bring Christ to the campus and the campus to Christ. You do not have to be on the faculty to participate in this mission. Your presence at Mass and our liturgies, your financial support, and your faith-filled Catholic Christian lives are an immense witness to these young disciples of Jesus.

Now we enter into a quiet time as we await the madness of the beginning of the fall semester. We are waiting for the arrival of our new associate pastor from Chicago, Fr. Benjamin, who will fill the vacancy of Fr. Tony. Our new priest cannot replace Fr. Tony – no one can – but he will become an integral part of our faith community. Let’s be sure to welcome him with all of our love.

Classes start on August 22, so new students and faculty will be joining us that weekend and the weekend before. So let’s all go out of our way to be especially welcoming. They will likely need some direc-tion.

Most importantly, at the 5:30 pm Mass on August 28, Bishop Estevez will join us to bless our beauti-ful sanctuary renovation and to celebrate the Red Mass – the dedication of the school year to God. Please plan to join us for that Mass. It is a celebration of who we really are as a faith community. Paul Gulig, Chair of Stewardship Committee

Message of mercy for august

A quote from scripture…

Psalm 85: 8 Show us, LORD, your mercy; grant us

your salvation.

Salmos 85:8 ¡Manifie stanos, Sen or, tu misericordia y danos tu salvacio n!

A MESSAGE FROM ONE OF OUR STUDENTS

Dear St. Augustine Parishioners,

My name is Silvio Martinez, and I am a second-year Public Health student at UF who just returned from studying abroad in Cusco. I wanted to share how the experience impacted me and the fundraiser I have started. I volunteered at a poor healthcare center called Santa Rosa, and there I witnessed challenges that one would al-most never see in a clinic in the US. To highlight a few issues, for an entire week they had no running water, the nurses shared one Doppler between 3 rooms, and the entire 4-story building has only one computer with Wi-Fi and only 2 scales (one half-broken). One day, a nurse told me about a male technician who had a heart attack in Santa Rosa, and they were in need of an oxygen tank to sustain him for the long ride to the hospital. Because they lacked a simple oxygen mask, the man died on the way, and there was nothing they could do about it.

In many situations, having access to simple resources can make the difference between a patient’s life and death. I was inspired by Santa Rosa’s healthcare staff; despite their lack of resources and money, they perse-vere to treat the hundreds of daily patients. The staff was so kind-hearted, offering to walk into the poor commu-nity to treat disadvantaged patients who can’t make it to the clinic. Every day, they taught me essential lessons and increased my motivation to work with Doctors without Borders. Because of their love and dedication, I have started a fundraiser to help them get basic medical supplies (you can donate and see the supply list in the link below). I have raised a third of it so far, but still need a lot of help. Would you prayerfully consider giving just $5 or $10 donations? If 100 people donate, I would reach my goal of $1,000. If you cannot donate, your prayers and spreading the word would help immensely.

Visit www.gofundme.com/silvioincusco for the

full story and to donate!

God Bless, Silvio Martinez

EUCHARIST: THE ULTIMATE COMMUNICATION OF DIVINE MERCY

BY FR. LEONARD CHUWA, AJ PHD September 10th, 2016 9:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m.

Cost $20 lunch included

Being the face of God's mercy Jesus communicates Himself fully in the mystery of the Eucharist. As Jesus' disciples, all Christians are called to be like Christ, to be mercy. The Eucharist is communion with Christ's mystical body and a covenant to be as merciful as our Heavenly Father is merci-ful. Both aspects of the Great Commandment of Love can only be understood from the perspective of Divine Mercy and empathy. How are we going to be students in Christ's school of mercy?
