MESSAGE OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA—MAY 13, 1917 May 13th and 14th Page Three

As previously written about here, this weekend the observance of the 100th Anniversary of the Marian Apparitions in Fatima, Portugal are being celebrated. An account of the First Apparition on May 13, 1917 is given by Lucia, one of the three children. This is her account, the words of the Blessed Mother are in bold: We began to go down the slope driving the sheep towards the road. When we were half-way down, near a holm oak there [the large tree which today is encircled with an iron fence], we saw another flash of lightning, and after a few steps we saw on a holm oak [a small one lower on the hillside] a lady dressed in white, shining brighter than the sun, giving out rays of clear and intense light, just like a crystal goblet full of pure water when the fiery sun passes through it. We stopped astounded by the Apparition. We were so near that we were in the light that encircled her, or which she radiated, perhaps a meter and a half away [4-5 feet]. Please don't be afraid of me, I'm not going to harm you. Lucia asked, "Where are you from?" I come from heaven. "And what do you want of me?" I want you to return here on the thirteenth of each month for the next six months, and at the very same hour. Later I shall tell you who I am, and what it is that I most desire. And I shall return here yet a seventh time. "And shall I go to heaven?" Yes, you will. "And Jacinta?" She will go too. "And Francisco?" Francisco, too, my dear, but he will first have many Rosaries to say. "Is Maria Neves in heaven?" Yes, she is. "And Amelia?" She is in purgatory. Will you offer yourselves to God, and bear all the sufferings He sends you? In atonement for all the sins that offend Him? And for the conversion of sinners? "Oh, we will, we will!" Then you will have a great deal to suffer, but the grace of God will be with you and will strengthen you. Lucia relates that as the Lady pronounced these words, she opened her hands, and we were bathed in a heavenly light that appeared to come directly from her hands. The light's reality cut into our hearts and our souls, and we knew somehow that this light was God, and we could see ourselves embraced in it. By an interior impulse of grace we fell to our knees, repeating in our hearts: "Oh, Holy Trinity, we adore You. My God, my God, I love You in the Blessed Sacrament." The children remained kneeling in the flood of this wondrous light, until the Lady spoke again, mentioning the war in Europe, of which they had little or no knowledge. Say the Rosary every day, to bring peace to the world and an end to the war. After that she began to rise slowly in the direction of the east, until she disappeared in the immense distance. The light that encircles Her seemed to make a way amidst the stars, and that is why we sometimes said we had seen the heavens open. As you read this I am, God willing, in Fatima for the Papal Mass to celebrate the anniversary and the canonization of two of the seers, Jacinta and Francisco. On this auspicious occasion an Act of Consecration to the Blessed Mother is included in this bulletin and may be found on our website. Please pray this and offer yourself to Jesus through Mary, include as many others in the Act of Consecration that you can. Each diocese and parish throughout the world is participating in this Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Mother. The celebration of First Holy Communion was beautiful last Saturday. Forty of our children encountered Jesus in the Sacrament of the Most Holy Eucharist for the first time in their lives. Surrounded by parents, godparents, grandparents, family and friends the children were so joy-filled and enthusiastic in their desire to encounter Jesus. Prayerful thanks to Deirdre Nemeth, the parish Director of Faith Formation for all the work she puts into the program, to Sr. Krystyna and Maria DeLuca who assist her so well. Also a word of thanks to the children’s catechists and classroom aides: Kacey Bedi, Jeannie Connell, Denise and John Esmerado, Elizabeth Girards, Kristen Hubert and Cathleen McMahon. Photos of First Communion are viewable on our website. On Sunday, twenty of the First Communicants participated in the beautiful devotion in honor of The Blessed Mother, the May Crowning. At the 10:30 AM Mass Matthew Connell (a 1st communicant), with his mom Jeannie, and his grandmother Marie Murray, carried and placed the crown on the image of the Blessed Mother as we invoked her intercession. For many years the crown, which is made of fresh flowers, has come from the artistry and handiwork of Trudi Seitel, who also creates the beautiful flowers on the baptismal font each Easter—such a gift of love for us. Thank God for the blessings we receive in such abundance. Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us. Peace, Fr. Richard

The most important person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has bui lt

something more magnificent than any cathedral – a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby’s body. The angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God’s creative miracle to bring new saints to Heaven. Only a human mother can. Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature; God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation. What on God’s good earth is more glorious than this; to be a mother? ~ Cardinal Mindszenty
