PARISH NEWS

Dear Parishioners and Friends, As we move through summer I hope you are able to enjoy some down time, and are able to stay dry and out of the city heat. I look forward to seeing you upon my return next weekend, and please enjoy these excerpts from the lives of the Saints that we honor and invoke this coming week. Monday the Church celebrates St. Peter Chrysologus (380-450), who served as Bishop of Ravenna in Italy from 433-450. Chrysologus means “golden worded”, as Peter was known for his eloquent preaching. “Let this be the pattern for all when they practice mercy: show mercy to others in the same way, with the same generosity, with the same promptness, as you want others to show mercy to you.” “And the Creator… has made you in His image that you might in your person make the invisible Creator present on earth; he has made you his legate, so that the vast empire of the world might have the Lord’s representative.” On Tuesday we honor St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556), founder of the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits. As a young man, Ignatius was drawn to the military, yet shortly after he began serving, he was badly wounded by a cannonball. It was during his recovery that Ignatius had a spiritual conversion. As the hospitals of the day were run by Religious, the only reading readily available to Ignatius were religious and devotional works. One work in particular, Ludolph of Saxony’s De Vita Christi, on the life of Christ and the Saints, made its impact on this soldier now turning saint. Once able to walk again, Ignatius made his way to the famous Benedictine Monastery of Montserrat, where he left his dagger and sword at the altar of the Virgin Mary. For the next two decades, Ignatius’ life would be marked by pilgrimage, devotion, study, and discernment, all of which would finally lead him to found a new Order in the Church, the Society of Jesus, dedicated to a life of self-denial and total obedience to the Holy Father, with a special focus on missionary work. Today the Jesuit Order is the largest single Order in the Catholic Church and maintains its focus on missionary work, social justice, and higher education, and has over 16,000 members.

On Wednesday the Church honors St. Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787), an Italian priest who would eventually found the Redemptorist Order, the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. As a young priest Alphonsus immersed himself in pastoral work, and spent most of his time with the People of God, both young and old, in the Kingdom of Naples. Alphonsus had a wonderful ability to gather God’s people together in simple ordinary settings so that they could be moved by the life of Christ. He was known to be a humble and effective confessor, and today the Congregation numbers over 8,000 and runs over 700 parishes throughout the world. Friday is the Feast of St. John Vianney, patron of parish priests. John, from France, lived from 1786-1859, and how interesting that it took until the 1800s for diocesan priests to receive a proper patron! John’s life was marked by intense fasting, penance, and devotion, and some would say that his model of holiness is too rigorous to be assumed today, but we know that holiness is never out of style and never out of reach with God’s help. John served in a simple parish in a simple town in France, Ars, still there today. John himself struggled to hang on to his vocation, desiring the monastic life, but his people desired his people would not let him flee to the nearby Trappist monastery. John’s devotion to the Mass, the Blessed Sacrament, and Confessional helped the people come close to Christ, and it is this Sacramental way that has made him a model for parish priests. Amid the turmoil of our days- remember that John lived during the Revolution- Christ is always near, in a most special way through the His sacramental presence. Finally, Saturday, we celebrate the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, also known as Our Lady of the Snows. The Legend says that in the 4th Century, a John and his wife, wealthy Romans with no heirs, prayed to Mary that she might show them where they should build a church in her honor. At the height of the Roman summer, on August 5, snow appeared on the Esquiline Hill, marking the spot where they were to build their church. The church of St. Mary of the Snows became one of the Principal Patriarchal (Papal) churches in Rome because it was the first there dedicated to Mary. As always let us pray for peace. Father Duffell

NOTICIAS PARROQUIALES

Querido Feligreses y Amigos;

Padre Duffell
