The Pastor’s Corner

Which tables in your life could Jesus knock over and you

still would listen to him? As he spills the coins of the

money changers, how much could he disrupt your

finances before you would push him out?

Today almost halfway into Lent we are bumped into by a

Jesus who seems very ready to disrupt some pretty

important things in our lives. Things like how we spend

our money, how we spend our time--these are important

for us. Jesus seems ready to crash right in.

This is why Paul today calls Jesus and his cross a

stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the

Gentiles. Most people who encounter him are going to

encounter someone they don't like because he messes

things up.

Even for us Catholics one of the ways we can keep Jesus

acceptable is by keeping him at arm's distance. Paying

him lip service, or admiring things like the Ten

Commandments on paper, we can maintain a protective

buffer keeping him from intruding into our personal lives.

But here you are in church this Sunday, and here you are

reading this reflection, and perhaps Jesus is letting you

know he's about to break in. Lent is our season that

reminds us we only have a little time left on this earth--

'Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return'--

and Jesus knows what upheaval is necessary to get us

where we need to be.

If you're willing for God to introduce freedom into your

life, to introduce joy, fulfillment, and meaning, let him

know. Just know that he knows what it will take to let

the light in.

Third Sunday of Lent |March 4, 2018

Tercer Domingo de Cuaresma |marzo 4, 2018

There will be no regular confessions at 4pm or 6:30pm Spanish Mass, on Thursday, March 8 due to the Lenten Penance Service that evening.

Our Don Bosco Youth Group meetings will be every Friday from 5:00 – 6:15pm in the School Science Room. Come and participate in your Catholic faith- this is your group this is your Church. Viva Cristo Rey.

This weekend starts the First of Three Scrutinies for the unbaptized adults in RCIA. The Scrutinies take place on the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent. “The scrutinies, solemnly celebrated on Sundays and reinforced by an exorcism, are Rites for self-searching and repentance and have above all a spiritual purpose. The scrutinies are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective or sinful in the hearts of the elect [those preparing for the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and the Eucharist]; to bring out, then strengthen, all that is upright, strong and good. The Scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, who is the way, the truth and the life. These rites, therefore, should complete the conversion of the elect and deepen their resolve to hold fast to Christ and to carry out their decision to love God above all”.

Essentially these rites are compose of prayers of intercession and the laying on of hands so that the Holy Spirit may be invoked and the spirit of evil cast out. They are celebrated purposefully at Mass so that the whole congregation is given the opportunity to pray for and support those preparing for the Easter sacraments and to make the poin that conversion is not only a personal matter but a communal commitment. They have their origin in the early Church.

Adopt a Student Tuition Assistance Fund – St. Isidore School

During the weeks of February 25th through March 18th, St. Isidore Parish and School is increasing awareness of the financial assistance needed by many families who desire a Catholic school education for their children. More than 50 % of our school families cannot afford the full tuition. Hopefully through your prayers and support we can increase our Adopt-a-Student program 100%.

The second collection next week is for St.

Isidore School. Thank you for your continued

support to our Parish School.

THANK YOU–THANK YOU–THANK YOU Thank you to everyone who provided food, set up tables, chairs, cots and served meals to our guests in the shelter program during the months of January and February. We housed an average of 21 people each night, which included several young children and provided over 300 meals. Thank you to the many organizations, ministries and families who cooked, served, and shared their faith and time with our guests. Thank you, Father Brown for approving our participation again for our 8th year and very special thanks to Deacon Eldon for always being there. Shelter Team (REST) is, “Bear one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (Gal 6:2). Our parishioners through their generosity and hospitality exemplified the spirit of this vision statement. Without you this would not have been successful. The needs of the poor do not end with the REST program; the needs are every day. Please remember to continue to support our St. Vincent de Paul Society and the local Hands of Hope Resource Center who are committed to serve those in need.

DESCUBRIR NUESTRO DEBER

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
