A Prayer for the NationAlmighty God, you have given us this good land for

our heritage. We humbly ask you that we may alwaysprove ourselves a people mindful of your favor and gladto do your will. Bless our land with honorableendeavor, sound learning and pure manners. Save usfrom violence, discord and confusion, from pride andarrogance, and from every evil way. Defend ourliberties and fashion into one united people themultitude brought here out of many nations and tongues. Endow with the Spirit of wisdom those to whom in yourname we entrust the authority of government, that theremay be justice and peace at home, and that throughobedience to your law we may show forth your praiseamong the nations on earth. In time of prosperity fill ourhearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble do notallow your trust to fail. Thomas Jefferson

Prayers from the Mass for

Independence Day

Father of all nations and ages, we recall the day when

our country claimed its place among the nations. For what has been achieved we give you thanks. For the work that still remains we ask your help.

All-powerful Father, we rededicate ourselves to your

service, and to the works of justice and freedom for all.

As you have called us from many peoples to be onenation, help us to give witness in our lives, and in ourlife as a nation, to the rich diversity of your gifts. Grantthat under your providence our country may share yourblessings with all the peoples of the earth.

Loving Father, your son Jesus spoke to people a

message of peace, and taught us to live as brothers andsisters. His message lives on in our midst as a task forus today and a promise for tomorrow.

We thank you, Father, for your blessings in the past and

for all that, with your help, we must yet achieve.

I can’t leave this place! As a bishop and then as a cardinal, JorgeMario Bergoglio relentlessly heardconfessions— and the homilies and speecheshe has given over these first few monthstestify to this. But now, as pope, he is nolonger able to leave the Vatican and listen toconfessions in parishes as he used to do backin Buenos Aires.

In an off-the-cuff speech he gave during thePentecost Vigil Mass in St. Peter’s Square, hesaid, “When I go to hear confessions ... butnow I can’t because I can’t get out of here! But that is another problem...”

Mr. & Mrs. Whiner: Don’t be a sourpuss!During a recent homily, Pope Francis, using a phrase that translates literally as “the face of a pickled pepper,” said:

“The Christian is a man or woman of joy. When Christians have more of a sourpuss than a face that communicates thejoy of being loved by God, they harm the witness of the Church.

“While happiness is a good thing, it’s not the same as the profound joy that comes from the certainty that Jesus is withus and with the Father.

“If one tries to be happy all the time, that happiness ends up transforming itself into lightness, superficiality and leadsto a state of lacking Christian wisdom. It can make us fools, dupes, no?

“Joy is something else. Joy is a gift from the Lord. The joy the Lord gives cannot be bottled up so we can keep it withus. If we want this joy just for ourselves, in the end it will make us sick and our hearts will shrivel up, and our faceswill not transmit that great joy, but instead, a “nostalgia” — a melancholy that isn’t healthy. Joy naturally leads togenerosity.

“Joy is one of the virtues of those who don’t allow themselves to getcaught up in silly annoyances or in little things inside the community ofthe Church; they always look to the horizon. The Christian sings withjoy and walks carrying this joy.

“Even in the midst of trials and tribulations, the Christian is alwaysjoyous, never sad. A Christian who constantly complains fails to be agood Christian. A Christian who constantly complains becomes Mr. orMrs. Whiner because they always complain about everything.

“The Lord invites us to this: to be rejuvenated Easter people on ajourney of love, and patience, enduring our tribulations, and also, puttingup with one another. We do this with charity and love because if I haveto put up with you, I’m sure you will put up with me, and in this way wewill move forward on our journey on the path of Jesus. Let us ask theLord for the grace of Christian endurance which gives us peace...”

Pope Francis:

Christians don’tsay MY Father, but OUR Father...On June 20, during his daily Mass atthe Vatican’s Saint Martha House,Pope Francis explained the Gospel ofMatthew’s presentation of the Lord’sPrayer. (Matthew 6,7-15)

Jesus immediately gives us a piece ofadvice in prayer: in praying do notbabble. “When you pray, there is noneed to use many words. Your Fatherknows what you need before you askhim. Pray like this: Our Father...”

Jesus teaches us not to turn to God with so many words because he knows everything. Prayer is not a magical thing -there is no magic with prayer.

When Christians address God as “our Father,” they acknowledge that God created and loves them, but they alsorecognize that all people are their brothers and sisters. We have a Father who is very close to us, who embraces us.

The Gospel of Matthew’s presentation of the Lord’s Prayer begins with a recognition of the God – our Father – whocreated each person, loves each one and knows what each one needs.

To whom do I pray? To “Almighty God?” No, he is too far away and remote. And the nebulous “cosmic God” who seems so popular today is not personal enough.

You must pray to the Father. “Father” is a strong word. You must pray to the one who generated you and gave youlife.

At the same time, Christians don’t say “MY Father,” but “OUR Father” because I am not an only child, none of us is.

“We have a Father who is very close to us, who embraces us.” — Pope Francis

It is wrong to think our enemies must go to hell . . . People cannot think they are coming honestly to God in prayer and addressing him truly as “our Father” if they areangry or holding grudges against someone.

But we might think: “He (that person) did this to me, just you wait.... I’ll repay him the favor. He must go to hell, right? I will have nothing to do with him!”

But if I am not at peace with my brothers, I cannot say “Father” to Him.

The Lord’s Prayer is followed by Jesus’ telling his disciples: “If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenlyFather will forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.”

It’s so hard to forgive others and to let go of the desire to get even. However, you cannot pray with enemies in yourheart. Jesus has promised us the Holy Spirit. He will teach us, from within, from the heart, how to say “Father,” andhow to say “our.”

A visitor’s impressions . . . “This past weekend we decided to drive to Mobile from Mississippi to spend the weekend.

“On Saturday, as we made our way through town, the sign on Airport Blvd. gave notice of Corpus Christi – nice to see since we had to do very little looking to find a church for Mass.

“So we reconned (military folks!) the church and what a surprise.

“Very modern, large and beautifully designed. I couldn’t get enough of the church itself, the additional worship area, banquet hall, etc., and that is what we could walk around and look at on our own.

“The two biggest impacts on us though — the attendance at Mass as well as the MUSIC.

“My husband, who is Baptist, first noticed how everyone dressed nice, how many people were present for Mass, the introductions at the beginning of Mass – such nice people – and then, oh, the music. It was lovely.

“I just wanted to pass this on as feedback. Obviously a devoted parish and pastoral staff . It was so nice to see and experience.”
