CDMA450 history
• CDMA450 – one of three technologies initially submitted to the NMT MoU as candidate for upgrade of NMT450 networks;
• 1998 - CDMA2000 is a part of Recommendation ITU-R M.1457 – one of the IMT2000 radio interfaces – IMT2000 CDMA Multi-Carrier - IMT MC
• October 1999 - Plenary of NMT MoU accepted CDMA450 as one of technologies for migration;
• 1999 - Band Class 5 included in CDMA2000 to cover frequency arrangements in 450 MHz
• October 2007 - 450 MHz and was adopted as one of the candidate bands for 3G at WRC-07
Mobile broadband gets frequency boost
by Melanie ReynoldsElectronics Weekly Friday 30 November 2007
Increased frequency spectrum will be made available for mobile broadband and 3G/4G technologies following agreements reached at this year’s World Radio communication Conference (WRC) in Geneva.
Globally harmonised UHF spectrum at 450-470MHz and 2.3−2.4GHz was agreed, while harmonisation across some countries was agreed for 698−862MHz, 790−862MHz and 3.4−3.6GHz.
This spectrum will be used for mobile broadband services and next-generation networks in developing and developed countries.“Radio signals in the UHF spectrum will travel further than signals in the higher bands, enabling future mobile broadband networks to reach as far as 2G networks do today,” said Tom Phillips, chief regulatory affairs officer at the GSM Association.
The approval of 450-470MHz was described as “an important moment in the history of CDMA2000” by Tina Radford, chairman of the International 450 Association (IA450).
“The IA450 believes this identification will bolster a wider and more efficient utilisation of the 450-470MHz band through the deployment of CDMA450 systems for the provision of 3G services,” said Radford.

More than just a digital migration from NMT450
CDMA450 offers significant coverage advantage over systems operating at higher frequencies
- An opportunity to go directly from 1st generation to 3rd generation networks and service- Integrates/complements existing infrastructures- 3G voice & data in the 450 MHz spectrum with high spectral efficiency – 1 carrier requires 1.8 MHz including guard bands- Significantly reduced Capex and Opex profile due to larger cells and ability to serve both fixed and mobile users -Variety of service segments supported with the same network- Significantly fewer base stations- Rapid network deployment- Reduced environmental impact- ITU and CEPT approved
