Welcome to Trenton! Community offers a wide range of things to see and do T he end of the War of 1812 and the

signing of the peace treaty sig-naled the development of the settlements along the southern Detroit River, includ-ing the present-day Trenton, a 7.25-square-mile city with a population of 18,138 people. Trenton’s founder was Major Abram Caleb Truax. After the War of 1812, Major Truax decided to stay in this area. Truax acquired a large tract of land, the highest ground along the Detroit River, and upon which he erected a saw mill, church and store. It was first laid out to be Truax in 1834, and was then called Truaxton, and later Truago. In 1850, a new plat was recorded un-der the name of Trenton. It was again incorporated in February of 1855. There were new ventures, and the first dock was built in 1834, by Giles Slocum. Slocum would later marry Major Truax's daugh-ter, Sophia. Together, they would make their home on Slocum's Island. It is this island that would later become Elizabeth Park. With the building of the dock, steam-boats would make Trenton a regular stop. Business flourished and new settlers ar-rived. The population steadily increased until, in 1922, approximately 4,000 citi-zens resided in Trenton. The post-war boom drove the city’s population up to a peak of nearly 25,000 by the early 1970s. Trenton has many amenities that could be of interest to both visitors and prospective new residents. Along with numerous outdoor recreational offerings, Trenton also has many dining and enter-tainment options. Some of our “must see” facilities avail-able for group and visitor activities in-clude The Trenton Cultural Center, The Trenton Veterans Memorial Library, The Detroit River International Wildlife Ref-uge, Elizabeth Park and Marina, Kennedy Recreation Center and Aquatic Center, and a second boat launch facility at Ro-tary Park. The community has various festivals and events throughout the year, including the annual Trenton Summer Festival the last weekend of June, held in the “downtown” area on West Jefferson, an annual Fireworks celebration on July 4, the PNC Roar on the River power boat races the third week in July, Country Fest on the River the last weekend in July, and Jazz on the River the first weekend in August. Activities are scheduled throughout the summer especially for children, so make sure to check the city’s website, www.trentonmi.org, for concerts and out-door movie showings, at the Cultural Cen-ter.

In the fall guests can stroll back in time at the annual Somewhere in Time and Taste of Trenton at Elizabeth Park, held the third Sunday in September. On Good Friday before Easter guests can enjoy the Great marshmallow drop at Elizabeth Park. The city holds three an-nual parades including a Memorial Day, Christmas and High School Homecoming parades. A stroll through the Cultural Center, located at the corner of West and Edsel roads, can be a delight at many points throughout the year. Each season brings with it a variety of great traditions, in-cluding a seasonal community garden, perennial plant exchange, children’s cook-ing classes, movement and dance, art and craft classes, concerts and movies. The holiday season is especially festive at the Cultural Center, where visitors have ac-cess to holiday teas, shopping in the craft barn, theme parties in the historic Emily Frank homestead, and visits with Santa. Even his reindeer are known to stop by this time of year. Make sure to check out the Trenton Veterans Memorial Municipal Library —

located right across from the Kennedy while you are here. Along with plenty of activities, visitors can rent a favorite

movie or book while in town with a valid library card. The Kennedy Recreation Center is the home to the aquatic center, a 13,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art outdoor swim-ming facility that offers many attractions to keep visitors occupied! A concession stand, lounge chairs and large shade um-brellas add to the fun. The City of Trenton has recently part-nered with Oakwood Southshore Hospital to further a healthy community initiative. This partnership was the result of a Com-munity Health Needs Assessment that was recently completed by Oakwood Healthcare. These goals include: Promot-ing an Active Community through Health and Wellness Opportunities, Developing and Cultivating Partnerships and Foster-ing Human Development by Expanding Diversified Recreation Opportunities. Details will be available on the City web-

One of the major assets of visiting or living in Trenton is the easy accessibility to one of the region’s leading healthcare facilities: Oak-wood Hospital-Southshore. In fact, over the past decade, the facility has blossomed, expanding and enhancing its commitment to increasing the longevity and qual-ity of life for Downriver residents. Officials for the hospital said that, through the implementation of the “Southshore Promise” in 2004, Oakwood’s attention was focused on turning the facility into a respected, award-winning, regional leader in high-quality, compassionate, personalized inpatient and outpatient health care. “We were determined to elevate the quality and services provided by the hospital and we put all of our effort and resources behind mak-ing that vision become reality,” said Edith Hughes, division president of Oakwood Hospital-Southshore. The first phases of the promise allowed for the opening of a gleam-ing new pavilion, which was followed by significant technology, ser-vices and facilities enhancements to insure the highest level of patient care and satisfaction, such as: Five fully-integrated, world-class surgi-cal suites; state-of-the-art Emergency Department and an advanced trauma designation; updated and expanded Imaging Department, completed in 2009, with 64-Slice CT scanner, open MRI and PET/CT; digital mammography and breast care center; advanced heart cathe-terization lab, including life-saving emergency; and angioplasty proce-dures. Supporting community health care needs in the areas of cancer, stroke and heart disease, obstetrics, orthopedics, neurosurgery and many other specialty fields of medicine, subsequent phases of the promise have included: ● $5 million renovation in 2013 allowed for a new fifth floor with all-private room orthopedic unit, 14 bed intensive care unit, 15 bed orthopedic unit beds and nine medical surgical beds. ● Emergency Room technology and process enhancements have meant patients are cared for faster. Patients who drive to emergency bypass the waiting room. A nurse immediately assesses severity of condition and quickly assigns a bed. For patients who call 9-1-1, Oak-wood has equipped Downriver ambulances with special Bluetooth technology which allows EMS to transmit patient vitals. While en-route to the hospital, EMS and emergency physicians begin care im-mediately to achieve the best outcomes. “Whether it is the ER nurse or EMS crew in the ambulance, Oak-wood begins immediate, lifesaving care more quickly and efficiently,” said Troy Adamen, director of Laboratory Services and Emergency Services. “Competitors offer a wait guarantee or average ER wait time but we have demonstrated a median triage and beginning care time within 20 minutes.” Technology and procedure innovations have created new patient options for treating life-threatening conditions. One such procedure, EKOS, treats pulmonary embolisms with ultrasound technology. Ul-trasound creates a pressure wave directly to the clot that is the pul-monary embolism. Necessary medication is delivered faster and more directly to the clot, producing better outcomes and faster recovery for clot dissolution, sometimes as soon as 12 hours. “This is one more way Oakwood Hospital-Southshore is striving to bring the latest technology and quality to our patients," said Denise

Guffey, director of the Catheter Lab. New patient care techniques in surgical processes have produced quicker recovery. For example, Dr. James Eberhardt, orthopedic surgeon, uses a medication “cocktail” of specialized non-narcotic drugs during total hip replacements. The medication dramatically reduces post procedure pain, and allows the patient to sit and even walk within hours of the anesthetic. “Moving about faster and with greater control returns the patient to an active lifestyle, as soon as possible, which is the ultimate goal with every patient,” Eberhard said. Within the Southshore Promise, engaged, dedicated employees and physicians, many who live in the commu-nity, provide personalized care to patients and their fami-lies. Through their care, plus the site’s years of continual enhancements and innovations, the community has re-sponded positively. Patient volumes were up last year by about 20 percent and patient satisfaction has made Oak-wood Hospital-Southshore a national Press Ganey win-ner for patient satisfaction. With state-of-the-art technology, a specialized staff, a high treatment success rate and exceptional standards of patient care and quality, this one time neighborhood hos-pital has transformed into a medical destination of choice for people across the region. Despite its growth and suc-cess, Oakwood Hospital-Southshore continues to keep the promise made to the community to continue Oakwood’s mission to provide excellence in care, healing and health to the individuals and community served.

site. The Detroit River offers some of Michigan's finest fishing and Elizabeth Park Marina puts you right in the action. Elizabeth Park Marina and Boat Launch provides four launching, four loading wells and a 52-slip mooring facility. The facility has utility hookup, pump station and a new shower fa-cility. This award -winning transient marina was built in 1993 through an Ur-ban Waterways Grant. Improvements at the marina include a new shower facility and parking lot enhancement. The marina is open 24 hours a day from April 1 to Oct. 31. The entrance to the Elizabeth Park Marina is lo-cated on Grosse Ile Parkway, just before the entrance to the toll-free bridge to Grosse Ile. At Elizabeth Park visitors also can rent kayaks at Riverside Kayak Con-nection on Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Memorial Day through Labor Day, weather permitting. Kayak fishing boats are also available. For info contact Riverside Kayak Connection at (734) 285-2925 or online at riv-ersidekayak.com, Facebook, Twitter and blog. In 2001, the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge was established as a result of bi-national efforts from politicians, conservation leaders and local communities to build a sustainable future for the Detroit River and western Lake Erie ecosystems. Because of this collaboration, international status was given to the refuge, making it the first of its kind in North Amer-ica. Located along the lower Detroit River and western shoreline of Lake Erie, this international gem is situated just 20 miles south of Detroit and 50 miles north of Toledo, Ohio in Wayne and Monroe counties. The refuge’s nearly 6,000 acres consist of unique habitat, including islands, coastal wet-lands, marshes, shoals, and waterfront lands within an authorized bound-ary extending along 48 miles of shoreline. In 2004, the Detroit River Refuge acquired Humbug Marsh, a 410-acre unit situated in Trenton and the neighboring riverfront city of Gibraltar. The parcel represents the last mile of undeveloped shoreline along the U.S. mainland of the Detroit River and contains critical habitat for many rare fish and wildlife species. The site has also been designated as Michigan’s only “Wetland of International Importance” by the 1971 Ramsar Conven-tion. Plans to begin building a new, gold LEED-certified Refuge Visitor Center at the Refuge Gateway property, a former industrial manufacturing site that has been remediated and restored located adjacent to Humbug Marsh are currently underway, and construction is slated to be completed in fall 2015.
