Hello Again,

No golf today, it’s been raining a real Florida-type downpour all day.

A perfect day to catch up on writing and phoning family and friends.

I just finished a 20 minute phone conversation with my sister-in-law

in Ireland. Her husband, my oldest brother, Bert, completed his life-

time walk a few years ago, leaving many fond memories. Often, while

laughing he would say “Ireland would be the greatest little country in

the world if they would put a roof on it.”

It seems Ireland does receive more than its fair share of rainy days.

Its famous for its day-long soft rain and mild weather. The cold

weather temperature seldom drops below 32 degrees or in the sum-

mer raises above 80 degrees. A New York State master gardener

could only dream about such near perfect growing conditions. I believe

few countries worldwide can match Ireland’s gorgeous, flowers espe-

cially roses. Rhododendrums adorned with huge flowers and greenery

grow wild along the country roads.

When it comes to describing the beautiful greenery and flowers in

Ireland, even an Irish storyteller, blessed with an extra drop of blarney,

can not do it justice.

It seems that every week I learn more interesting tidbits about our

Upstate New York and the part the Mohawk Valley has played in the

history of our country and worldwide.

For example, did you know Mark Twain

was the first writer to submit a typed

manuscript to a publisher? He submitted

“The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” to Chotto

and Windus in England in 1876, It was

typed on a Mohawk Valley, Ilion, NY

Remington Typewriter.

For well over 150 years our neighbor Ilion,

as home of Remington, has played a very


important part in worldwide industry and here in our valley a major

employer. The Remington line of firearms is treasured by marksmen,

hunters and sportsmen. Remington is still a major gun

manufacturer and area employer.

One of my first guns used for hunting small game and deer was a

Remington automatic 12-gauge shot gun. My son had it re-built and

it still looks like brand new.

I’m sort of a history buff. I enjoy reading old newspapers especially

old local newspapers. It’s amazing what you learn.

I recently received a copy of the Dolgeville Republican dated March

3, 1933. It stated in the year 1810 the citizens of Salisbury held their

first official village or town meeting. During that meeting it was

agreed to pay a bounty for killing wolves. In addition to the wolf

bounty they established a fine or penalty for allowing cattle or sheep

to run at large. Proudly displayed under the publications’ name was a

slogan “Beautiful Dolgeville — Always busy”.

Two farmers were talking at the drug store. “What makes you think

Sam’s so stupid?” Joe asked. “Well,” Art explained, “There’s a poster

down at the Post Office that says, “Man wanted for Robbery in

Montreal” and Sam packed his bag and applied for the job!”

Before his daughter’s date, the father asked, “Elizabeth, does this

boyfriend of yours have any money?” “You men are all alike,” Elizabeth

replied, “That’s what he asked about you.”

Dear Editor,In light of the recent

article published aboutthe “Just One More”ministry I felt it neces-sary to give someinsight regarding thejourney that two ofyour local churchesare about to embarkon. I use the word jour-ney because here atthe Union Church ofSpearman we havelearned this ministry ismore than giving food,clothing or toys tothose in need. St.John’s Church ofFreysbush and St.Paul’s Church of FortPlain have recentlychosen to carry outthis ministry by takingtheir two churches andworking as one.Already, the veryheartbeat of this min-istry is working amongthem. As they begin tomeet the needs thatare many within theircommunity they willlearn there is a deeperpurpose in what theyare doing. They willmeet the outcast singlemother, thankful forwhat she receives, yetthankful still thatsomeone saw past herflaws and showed com-passion to her and herchildren. Throughtheir act of love, theywill encounter the eld-erly living alone, wait-ing for a visitor hopingto tell a tale of “thegood ole days” allowingthem to reminisce andbe young, for even amoment. Interwoven inthe examples thatJesus gave as he spokeof the father of theprodigal, the lost coin,or the lost sheep, youwill hear over and overagain; the heart of Godis for “one more”. “Onemore” is not a catch

phrase or a program tobe adopted; it is a com-mitment to lifestyleministry. Consider thelast moments of Jesus’life as He hung uponthe cross. In that des-perate moment, His lifepouring from His manywounds, His spiritbearing the weight ofall humanity; His eyeswere ever searching forone more. Though Hishands and feet werefastened, and thecrown He bore wasmade of thorns, a com-mon thief was savedupon meeting anuncommon savior.

Lastly, the focus of“one more” is both pur-poseful and perpetual.Whether it’s one morechild, one more mar-riage, one more meal,one more family, onemore salvation, or onemore prayer, this mustbe the mindset of thechurch as we refuse toaccept status-quo ormediocrity. “One more”embodies the wholemission of the church.St. John’s Church ofFreysbush togetherwith St. Paul’s Churchof Fort Plain have nowbecome One More towalk a road that wasonce less traveled, andless traveled it will beno more.

1. In 3-quartsaucepan, with wirewhisk, combinesugar and 1 1/2cups milk; heat onmedium-high untilbubbles form aroundedge of pan. Removefrom heat and addchocolate. Let stand1 minute, then whiskuntil chocolate

melts.2. Meanwhile, in

medium bowl, whiskcocoa, cornstarchand remaining 1/2cup milk untilsmooth. Whisk ineggs until blended.Whisking constantly,add 1/2 cup hotchocolate mixture inslow stream.

3. Heat chocolatemixture remaining inpan on medium-low.Whisking constantly,gradually add eggmixture to pan.Cook, whisking con-stantly, 10 minutesor until mixturebecomes very thickand begins to bub-ble. Whisk in vanilla.Divide among 6small serving cups.

Serves 6 to 8Cake1 cup egg whitesPinch of salt1 teaspoon salt11/4 cups sugar1 teaspoon cream

of tartar1 teaspoon vanilla

extract1 cup flour1/3 cup pitted and

finely chopped freshsweet cherries,divided

Cheesecake Filling16 ounces cream

cheese, softened1/4 cup sugar1/4 cup half-and-

half1/4 cup pureed

fresh sweet cherries1 1/2 cups finely

chopped fresh sweetcherries

1 1/2 cups shavedchocolate

1 cup preparedwhipped cream

Preheat oven to325°F. To preparethe cake, with anelectric mixer, beategg whites with saltand cream of tartaruntil they begin tofoam. Add sugar andbeat until stiff peaksform. Mix in vanilla.Carefully fold inflour.

Pour half of thebatter into anungreased 9-inchtube pan and topwith half of thechopped cherries.Pour in the remain-ing batter and sprin-kle on the remainingcherries. Bake for 50minutes, or until atoothpick comes outclean. Let cool beforeremoving from thepan. To prepare thefilling, blend creamcheese and sugarwith an electricmixer until smooth.Add half-and-halfand pureed cherries.

To assemble, cutthe cake into 1-inchcubes. In a trifledish, place an evenlayer of cake cubesand cheesecake fill-ing. Sprinkle withchopped cherriesand shaved choco-late. Repeat layersuntil the trifle dish isfull, finishing withwhipped cream andthe remaining cher-ries and chocolateon top.

Q: I’ve got an oldhot-water heating sys-tem that pumps waterfrom the boiler to theradiators around myhouse. I’ve noticedthat some of the radi-ators heat onlyhalfway: The bottompart heats, but the toppart doesn’t. Any rea-

A: Radiators thatdon’t heat up com-pletely or that feelcooler toward the topmay have air trappedin them, a problemthat can be resolvedpretty quickly bybleeding the air out.

First turn off thethermostat (you don’t

want the system run-ning while you do this)and let the systemcool down for a fewminutes. Then startwith the radiatorthat’s closest to theboiler. Locate the airvent near the top ofthe radiator. Beingcareful to protect yourhands from the hotwater, open the airvent just one turnusing a screwdriver or

a radiator key. Youshould hear air hiss-ing out. As soon aswater starts to appearat the vent, close it up.Move to the nextaffected radiator andrepeat the process.

How can I repair asplit drop finial andchipped molding froma Victorian parlortable?

If you have themissing pieces, usehide glue to put themback in place. Furni-ture makers tradition-ally used this type ofglue. It is strong,cleans up with water,and allows plenty of

time to set and adjustyour clamps. Furni-ture conservators likehide glue because itmakes taking apartold joints and mis-aligned repairs rela-tively easy.

Before you re-adhere the finial ormolding make sureyou remove any oldglue so that you get astrong bond. Hide glue

will come off withwater. When you gluepieces, make sureyour clamps arepadded to avoid mar-ring the surface. Any“squeeze out” can bewiped off with a damprag. After the gluesets, completelyremove residue alongthe glue line by dis-solving it in water.

Flake hide glue,

evening of each month it isbecoming a tradition for folksfrom as far away as Albany totravel to the Fonda-FultonvilleMethodist Church to attendthe ‘All Free Coffee House’ pre-sented there, where musiciansabound!

It’s hard to determinewhether it was ChristinePullen, sister-in-law of PastorNancy Pullen, or musician(and MC) Tom Staudle whofirst had the idea of utilizingthe fellowship hall at thechurch to draw in the commu-nity in this unique way. Eachcredits the other with initiatingthis very successful event,which continues to growmonthly.

Regardless of who thought ofit, the concept has grown byleaps and bounds. The 20 plusmusicians who gather to per-form at the event present amixture of all kinds of musicand instrumental pieces.

At the February event, musi-cian Phil Minnich — wellknown for his vocals, bass andguitar — and his affiliationwith Linda Lee and The FoxCreek Band, provided expertbacking for other musicians.

Cosby Gibson of RichfieldSprings, known for her talentin composing and performing

original acousticand contempo-rary folk songs,performed hernewest melody,“Heart to Heart”at the event.“Every time Ihear her sing,she soundsmore and morelike JudyCollins,” com-m e n t e dMinnich.

Country &Western, Blues,Bluegrass, Irish,Reggae, Cajun,and Classicalare a few of themusical genresheard during the evening’sentertainment.

Tables held all kinds of foodand desserts — all donated bythe people attending and alsoby the musicians themselves.

“It doesn’t seem like much tomake a few cupcakes to bringin,” said musician PhyllisReese. Reese and her husbandEddie, both members of theEmpty Pockets Band, hadcome from Fort Plain to per-form at the coffeehouse.“Someone said there have beennights when the entertainmentlasts until 11:30!” Reesereported.

Pullen agrees that there aresome nights when there areover 100 attendees, many ofwhom are musicians. “Peoplecome from all around!” Pullensaid.

The next ‘no admission, nodonation - All Free CoffeeHouse’ will be held on March 3,beginning at 6:30 p.m.

By following a fewsimple preventivemaintenance steps,you can help protectthe environment by

improving gasmileage, which in turnsaves money at thepump.

Keep your carproperly tuned foroptimum perform-ance. Regular tune-ups, maintenance andhaving clean air filterswill help your car pol-lute less and burn lessgas. Getting a tune-upcan improve gasmileage by an averageof 4 percent. Simplychanging the car’s air

filter can improve effi-ciency by 10 percent.Fixing a serious main-tenance problem,such as a faulty oxy-gen sensor, canimprove gas mileageby as much as 40 per-cent.

Drive Smart – Ifyou have to drive yourcar, recognize thathow you drive has alot to do with fueleconomy. Avoid sud-den starts and stopsand go the speed limit.

Jerky and aggres-sive driving decreasesyour miles per gallon(MPG) and increaseswear and tear on yourvehicle. Minimizeunnecessary miles bycombining errands inone trip.

Lighten the Load –Get the junk out of thetrunk and the stuffout of your car, withthe exception of emer-gency items such as aspare tire, flares and afirst-aid kit. Extraitems weigh the vehi-cle down and cause anincrease in gas usage.

Regularly checkand replace dirty airfilters. An air filterthat is clogged withdirt, dust and bugschokes off the air andcreates a “rich” mix-ture – too much gasbeing burned for theamount of air – thatwastes gas and causesthe engine to losepower. Replacing aclogged air filter canimprove your car’sperformance, but notmiles per gallon.

Have spark plugschecked andreplaced if neces-sary. A vehicle canhave four, six or eightspark plugs, whichfire as many as threemillion times every1,000 miles.

This results in a lotof heat, electrical, andchemical erosion. Adirty spark plug alsocauses misfiring,which wastes fuel.

Maintain the cool-ing system. A coolingsystem thermostatthat causes the engineto run too cold willlower the fuel efficien-cy of a car by as muchas one or two mpg.There also areimproved radiatorcaps on the markettoday that allow thecooling system tooperate at a highertemperature beforeboiling over, increas-ing the system’s effi-ciency and reducingemissions

What is Re-RefinedOil?

Re-refined oil isused motor oil thatundergoes an exten-sive re-refiningprocess to remove con-taminants to producea good-as-new baseoil. This base oil isthen sold to blenderswho add additivepackages to producelubricants such asmotor oil, transmis-sion fluid, and grease.The main differencebetween re-refined andvirgin oil products isthat re-refined repre-sents the responsiblechoice for the environ-ment.

Are Re-RefinedLubricants Safe toUse?

Lubricants madefrom re-refined basestocks must undergothe same testing andmeet the same stan-dards as virgin lubri-cants in order toreceive the certifica-tion of the AmericanPetroleum Institute(API). Vehicle andengine manufacturerssuch as Ford, GeneralMotors, Chrysler, andDetroit Diesel haveissued warranty state-ments that allow theuse of re-refined oil aslong as it meets APIstandards. Many gov-ernment and privatefleets have used re-refined lubricants intheir vehicles for yearsand report no differ-ence in performancefrom virgin lubricants.

Why Use Re-Refined Oil?

Re-refined oil is goodfor the environmentand it’s priced compet-itively to regular motoroil. Also, do-it-yourselfoil changers “close therecycling loop” with re-refined oil by turningin their old oil andpurchasing motor oilthat has been used,

Though the job mar-ket has graduallybegun to recover,many people are stillout of work. In June of2011, the unemploy-ment rate in the U.S.was still hoveringaround 9 percentnationally, while Sta-tistics Canada report-ed that the Canadianunemployment ratewas roughly 7.4 per-cent during that sameperiod.

Each of those fig-ures illustrates thatmany North Ameri-cans are out of work.But the unemploy-ment epidemic is notexclusive to the U.S.and Canada. Acrossthe pond in England,for instance, the Officefor National Statisticsreports that nearly 2.5million of the coun-try’s residents were

out of work, a figurethat translates toroughly 7.7 percent ofthe country.

With such stagger-ing unemployment fig-ures, finding a job canseem like scaling Mt.Everest. But there aresteps job seekers cantake to ensure theirjob search is moresmooth than stressful.

• Decide what you’relooking for. Job seek-ers who begin a jobjust hoping to land ajob are less likely tofind a position theywill love and stickwith. While it’s under-standable to accept ajob offer in the currenteconomic climate evenif it isn’t a dream job,men and women whocan afford to wait outtheir job searchshould exercisepatience instead of

simply accepting thefirst offer to comealong.

Before beginning asearch, determineexactly what you wantto do. Avoid beingvague and be as spe-cific as possible whendiscussing your goalswith friends or a pro-fessional headhunter.The more vague youare, the more likelyyou are to wadethrough thousands oflistings, none of whichmight be what you’retruly looking for. Thegoal is to find legiti-mate leads you wantto follow up on, nothundreds of leads thatwill waste your time.

• Target specificcompanies. Just asyour career goalsshould be specific, soshould the companiesyou’re targeting. Job

seekers can make useof company Web sitesto learn about particu-lar companies withintheir targeted indus-try. If certain compa-nies are more appeal-ing than others, targetthose that appear tobe the best fit.

Once this back-ground research hasbeen completed, con-sult men and womenwithin your profes-sional network to seeif they can offer anyinput into the compa-nies that most appealto you. This can helpconfirm or deny yourfirst impression of thecompany, and mighteven yield a name youcan contact to discusspotential job open-ings.

your W-2 and 1099income forms in thenext few weeks. Your1099 for bank inter-est and 1098 formortgage interestpaid in 2011 shouldshow up in the sametime frame.

When they arrive,check them immedi-ately. Compare tointerest reported onyour bank state-ments and your year-to-date income andthe deductions fromyour last paycheck of2011. If you’re self-employed, check thefigures you’ve keptall year. If there areany discrepancies,report them immedi-ately, before you file.The company issuing

the forms will berequired to sendamended forms toyou and the IRS.

Even before yourforms arrive, you canuse your same esti-mate figures fromabove to run what-ifscenarios with taxsoftware on yourcomputer. Enter the datacarefully, especiallyyour Social Securitynumber, amountsand employer ID.Save your file often.

If you used a soft-ware program lastyear and are happywith it, purchase thesame brand again.Let the two programstalk to each other.(When it asks if youwant the program toimport the data fromthe previous year,click yes.) Assumingyou haven’t changedjobs or banks, muchof the data, such asemployer ID andcompany name, willtransfer to your new

software.The earlier in the

season you buy taxsoftware, the moreimportant it is to dothe programupdates. Taxchanges can (theo-retically) happen atany time. Every timeyou sit down to workon your taxes, askthe program to checkfor updates. Do thesame thing with yourstate tax software.
