Hello Again,

Listen to this tale oh ye friends of the land. Where shall we start in attempting to

understand Hiawatha’s insight and wisdom?

Let’s start in the beginning. The greater portion of what now constitutes the state of New

York, when first visited by our forefathers, was inhabited by five distinct and powerful Indian

tribes: the Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas and Senecas.

Each of these tribes were fiercely independent. They did not share a common language.

Often they raided each other. At one time there were six tribes. The Tuscaroras wandered

away to the south and settled in North Carolina leaving the five tribes in the New York area.

During these years, a Mohawk Indian by birth, lived during his growing up years with the

Mohawks. It was said that he became a great teacher and counselor but as the Bible

says—he could not be accepted as a prophet in his own land.

He moved to join the Onondagas, built a cabin, and took a wife. Here, he found a new

permanent home. After a period of time he became highly respected, was believed to be a

very wise statesman, lawgiver, shaman, and unifier, was given the honorable name of

Hiawatha, which means, “a very wise man.”

Eventually leaders from all of the five nations came to this wiseman for counsel and advice.

In this manner, all power came naturally into his hands. He was regarded as the first among

all leaders.

During Hiawatha’s lifetime, these five tribes were being invaded by their enemies from the

north. Plundering, stealing, murdering, raping and taking of hostages were common

practices.

It was during this time of trouble, leaders of the five nations met in counsel realizing their

own way of life was being destroyed by their northern enemies.

While the picture is not completely clear, Hiawatha presented a plan to join the five

separate groups into a large, powerful nation. The large and powerful Iroquois nation came

into power. They joined into such a powerful war machine, they could easily defend themselves

and repel the invaders.

Hiawatha, during counsel gatherings, shared a powerful bit of advice. From campfire to

campfire, he was given credit for saying, “Never invite more into our Iroquois Nation or sign

a treaty with any group. In doing so, we will surrender our strength to the treaty. In

honoring the treaty, we lose strength and others gain control over us.”

Hear Hiawatha’s advice: do not ever sign or become part of a treaty

whereby you surrender your rights to some other group. The lesson

from Hiawatha’s wisdom might apply to you and me, you know, we

Americans.

Please realize the following announcement could lead to one of the

greatest United States freedom-destroying acts or treaties we could

possibly ever become a part of.


Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently announced the Obama

administration will be working hand-in-glove with the United Nations to pass a new “small

arms treaty.”

In other words, or more accurate in my words:

If we, the United States, enter into an agreement or treaty with the U.N. to allow the U.N.

to have control over our citizens owning, using, selling, or lending small arms we will at that

time have entered into an agreement allowing this power group some control over the

citizens of the United States.

In my humble opinion—no outside organization or government should ever gain any power

over the citizens of the United States. We stand with our constitution and republic form of

government as our ruling concept. No outside power should ever be allowed to get a finger

hold into our way of life.

Remember a signed treaty would become something the U.N. could dictate and we would

have to obey. They would become master and we the humble slaves.

My prayer would include—do not allow this administration to lead our country deeper into

socialism or allow any organization to hold authority or control over us.

Please—no gun control treaty with the U.N. Leave the United States alone. Do not change

it.

As Hiawatha cautioned hundreds of years ago: Sign or join no treaty whereby we

surrender our authority or power over to some outside group. One mighty smart, very early

American. Born here in our area—he was a Mohawk Valley—Mohawk Indian.

The five New York Indian tribes became the all-powerful Iroquois nation. Like the Iroquois

Nation, the separate colonial states grew to become one nation of fifty states. As

Hiawatha said—let’s not surrender or hand over our freedom or control to an outside group.

We can pass our own laws. We do not need the U.N. to do it for us.

Some of our congressmen are quite thoughtful. They are suggesting an increase in the

minimum wage. They don’t think anyone should have to work for over a half hour to buy a

gallon of gas.

A hard working, honest country lady visiting Washington, hoping to meet Hillary Clinton

looked up and down the street and asked a policeman, “Which side is Hillary Clinton on?”

After a moment’s hesitation, the policeman, while shaking his head said, “Ours, I hope.”

Some may not be old enough to remember Kate Smith singing “God bless America, land

that I love.” The America she sang about was the greatest nation on the face of the earth

and it still is. Kate, I wish all Americans could hear your message.

With the same love and respect as the tone in her voice, we should attempt to share with

our neighbors, friends, and family.

“Celebrating the Journey”was the theme for NationalNursing Home Week 2012 (May13-19), and Folts Homes inHerkimer had planned eventsall week to honor their resi-dents and the staff who sharetheir journey and care for them.

For the staff, the week of cele-bration began with everyoneenjoying free coffee and bagels,followed by another day of pizza,wings and salad, and a Chineseauction where they were giventickets and had the opportunityto win various prizes displayedin the main lounge.

On Wednesday, an enter-taining game show titled“Thanks for the Memories”challenged everyone’s memoryof old songs, television pro-grams and movies. The audi-ence of staff and residents wasdivided into a “junior group”and a “senior group” to com-pete in remembering the musicof their own era. As the

energetic show host JoeTrionfero played the first fewnotes of songs in different cat-egories, memories were stimu-lated and the audience wouldshout out their answers, witha winner being chosen eachtime. By the end of the pro-gram, everyone was reminisc-ing about their favorite musicfrom the past, and thecrowded room was filledwith laughter and cheer-ing as final winners wereannounced.

Folts Homes contin-ued its celebration ofNational Nursing HomeWeek with ice creamsundaes for staff andresidents, and culminat-ed the festivities of theweek with a special cir-cus, including entertain-ment by the childrenfrom the Folts Child DayCare Program.

If you’ve ever blown out acandle (and who hasn’t), youknow all about the less thanpleasant smelling smoke thewick makes as it slowly burnsout. This was especially truewhen candles were made oftallow, the most commonlyused material by colonistsand pioneers who could notafford, or did not have accessto better lighting materials.

In addition to an unpleas-ant odor, tallow candlesburned unevenly. Blowing outa tallow candle would resultin the melted material beingspread around, too. A bell-shaped candle snuffer couldextinguish the flame, but notdo much to stop the lingeringsmoke.

A better solution is thisscissor-shaped candlesnuffer, which is a part of theantiques collection of Willis

“Skip” Barshied Jr. It wasused to snuff candles bysnipping off and collectingthe burnt portion of a can-dle’s wick. Trimmed candle

wicks kept the candles fromsmoking up the house. Thistype of snuffer could also beused to trim the wick on anoil lamp.

Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES has announcedthat it is in full support of theNew York State EducationDepartment’s recent proposalto create two new high schooldiploma options for studentsacross the state.

Beginning with childrenentering ninth grade inSeptember 2013, studentswould have a choice amongthree possible pathways to aRegents diploma:

• Traditional diploma – usingthe current Regents diplomaformat.

• CTE diploma – focused oncareer and technical education.

• STEM diploma – focusedon science, technology, engi-neering and math.

The new diploma options aredesigned to ensure that moreof New York’s students gradu-ate high school prepared forthe rigors of college and theworking world.

Herkimer BOCESSuperintendent MarkVivacqua said he supports theproposal, and a CTE-focuseddiploma could be very valuablefor students.

“Today’s career and techni-cal education programs are notwhat many of us rememberfrom our high-school years,”Vivacqua said. “All who entertechnical fields will need tofurther their learning in someway, and we are preparing stu-dents not only for work, but forpost-secondary education.”

The proposal to add thediploma options must beapproved by the state Board ofRegents before it can be imple-mented. A vote on the issue isexpected within the next fewmonths.

The traditional diplomawould maintain the currentexam structure, whichrequires students to pass fiveRegents exams: English, math,science, U.S. history and glob-al history.

Students pursuing the CTEdiploma would be required to

pass Regents exams inEnglish, math, science andU.S. history. Instead of theglobal history exam, theywould take a CTE assessmentthat meets the college andcareer-ready level of rigor.

Similarly, students pursuinga STEM diploma would substi-tute a second math or scienceassessment for the global his-tory requirement.

Leaders at Herkimer BOCESbelieve the new graduationoptions will help strengthenthe organization’s efforts towork with local businesses indeveloping a school-to-workpipeline.

Herkimer County Chamberof Commerce ExecutiveDirector John Scarano said hesupports the proposal becauselocal businesses are alwaystrying to find potential employ-ees with education in comput-ers, mathematics, plumbing,welding, electrical work andother CTE-based fields.

“They’re looking for work-ready people with those skills— we hear that more andmore,” Scarano said. “And Ithink that if we’re going toretain our students in thisarea, that’s how we’re going todo it — by allowing them tograduate with diplomas thatmake them ready for immedi-ate employment.”

Alice Savino, executive direc-tor of the WorkforceInvestment Board of Herkimer,Madison and Oneida Counties,said more vocational trainingshould be an option for stu-dents, so the Board of Regentsshould make it easier for stu-dents to follow the pathwaythey want to.

The proposal also could helpwith the problem of studentsdropping out of school becausethey lose interest or aren’tlearning anything they feel isrelated to something theymight do after high school,Savino said.

“I don’t think we provideenough vocational opportunities

to people — whether they wantto be an architect, an engineeror a machinist,” she said. “Wekind of suffocate that naturalinterest by not offering otheropportunities.”

Mark Cushman, executivevice president of FermerPrecision Inc. in Ilion, said hebelieves world-class manufac-turing is alive in New Yorkstate. Many businesses, how-ever, are having a difficult timefilling their succession plansbecause there aren’t enoughpeople trained in manufactur-ing skills, he said.

Fermer Precision has beenworking with other manufac-turers and local colleges to tryto reintroduce students tomanufacturing, Cushmansaid. The pathways proposalwould be another way toencourage young people tostay in this area and workhere, he said.

“By all means, our companyand other technical-basedcompanies, we’re endorsingthis,” Cushman said. “We rec-ognize there’s a need out there,and we also recognize we needto be training and nurturingthese young individuals tocome in and move us into thefuture.”

Pat Costello, president of theIBEW Local 43 union, said aCTE-based diploma would bebeneficial for students. Theunion, which primarily repre-sents electrical constructionworkers, has taken in manyBOCES graduates as appren-tices initially and as journey-men later, he said.

CTE graduates already havea great foundation from twoyears in the BOCES program,Costello said. It’s importantthat the new CTE diplomawould require a well-roundededucation, while also prepar-ing students for their nextstep, he said.

“It’s what the BOCES modelis supposed to do — trainyoung men and women forcareers,” he said.

St. Johnsville'sannual Springfesttook place with manyin the community par-ticipating in the color-

ful parade. Paradeorganizers wereChamber ofCommerce membersJuanita Handy andChris Arduini. Thiswas their first endeav-or at organizing theparade. “We were newat this,” Handy said.“We made lots of mis-takes, but people real-ly helped us out andwe had a lot of good

comments on theparade!” Handyreported that all of theSpringfest events werewell attended. “We hadour towpath run, abake sale and a barbe-cue, and a monstertruck, which was newthis year.”

Handy says theSpringfest has beenan annual event for

about 30 years. “Weall work hard and wewelcome in the sum-mer!” She said.

Katovitch says thatthe Fort PlainCommunity ActivitiesCouncil also isresponsible for theplanning of the Last

night in Fort Plainevent.

“These events arefor the betterment ofthe community,” Perrysaid. “It puts localpeople on the payrolland the sales tax fil-ters down to all of thecommunities inMontgomery County.We all benefit fromthese events.”
