Hello Again,
It was told that one of our press department technicians was showing his friend around
the pressroom when he was asked, “How long have you worked here?” He answered, “Ever
since the boss threatened to fire me.”
Yet in the pressman’s defense, Abraham Lincoln said, “My father taught me to work, he
didn’t teach me to love it.”
This morning while sitting with my wife in our kitchen sharing a pot of hot tea, we
chatted about our trip to Ireland. We recalled visiting with Aunt Phoebe in the kitchen of
the house my grandfather built.
You could never forget Aunt Phoebe’s oven-hot scones and Irish soda bread, or the
steaming hot tea. I swear the women of Ireland have locked in the secret of making hot
tea. With a cup of tea, a few slices of soda bread, two soft-boiled eggs in a cup—a dash
of salt and pepper with a wee nab of real butter, you quickly learn why the Irish of this
country long to visit the ole sod again.
Aunt Phoebe asked Uncle Joe, “Joe, how do you want your egg this morning?” He
answered, “Next to another one.”
A man by the name of Paddy McGill lived and worked on the family farm. Like so many
Irish, he enjoyed stirring things up on occasion.
He took special delight in teaching my brother who was about three years old how to
swear in both English and Gaelic. It appeared he was a willing student.
If you have soft tender ears, maybe you should jump over this part.
After putting in a hard day of work in the building business, granddad and our father
would stretch their legs and walk into the village of Ballyconnel for a mug of stout.
Believing if one wouldn’t hurt you, two had to be better.
One evening as they walked towards the village, brother Wesley who was about three,
started following them down the dirt road.
After threatening several times to get Wesley to turn back, he stopped in the middle of
the road with his hands on his hips, yelled “Then go on with ya—you pair of b_______ (word
used to identify a fatherless child.)” This proved to be Paddy’s greatest
accomplishments—face it, the story has lasted for nearly eighty years.
While Grandfather Tom has been gone for years, thoughts about him still come up in
family conversations.
My mother lived in the new home for only a short time before immigrating to the United
States. Mom spent most of her growing up years in the old thatched-
roof house farmhouse across the road. The only source of heat in the
farmhouse was a large stone fireplace fueled by peat. The peat was
harvested in a community-owned peat bog, owned in common with
other landowners.
It was Mom’s duty during her home years to drive an ass (donkey)
with an A-framed saddle across its back—holding two large woven
baskets to transport the bricks of dried peat from the bog to their
farmhouse.
Original Valley PENNYSAVER • May 5, 2012 Page 7
Sometimes it seems that our family has lived in two different worlds or times. Can you
imagine—now days—that you could or would require your young daughter to lead an ass,
with a load, carrying creel strapped to its back to a bog—load the two baskets with bricks
of peat, return to your home, unload and stack the peat bricks in the byre (barn), or could
the answer be “why not?”
It’s often been said if you want to loose friends, talk about religion or politics.
On the other hand, a question could and maybe should be asked and answered. Should
we Americans care enough about our country, our way of life, including our freedom to get
involved and share opinions?
I for one believe if we stand aside and do not get involved we will eventually lose our
wonderful way of life.
Remember the chatter about Mom as a young girl in Ireland on her family farm helping
the family way of life by having certain chores? Keep this in mind as you read on.
President Obama’s secretary of the United States Federal Government Department of
Labor, Hilda Solis, was recently proposing a new law that farm parents could no longer ask
or allow their children to work on the farm. This is not blarney; it’s a fact.
It caused such a political stink, Secretary Solis was told to table the proposal. Can you
imagine if you owned a dairy, beef, produce, fruit or crop farm here in upstate New York and
you could not allow your 6 foot 2 inch, 190 pound son to help or even learn by doing
anything on the family farm?
I have no choice but to believe the members, including Secretary Hilda Solis of the
Department of Labor, have never worked for a half hour on a farm in their lives nor do they
intend to. In fact, they know nothing about farm family life.
Is this ridiculous proposal about farm family life and labor a show plate of what is yet
to come? How this administration thinks!
What will be next? If we are told we can’t work, will we someday be told where we can
work—or must work? How much power do you think our federal government should have? I
believe it has already over-reached its limit and we the people should voice our opinion
against further big federal government growth.
Please accept my apology—I was not yet able to organize the first general meeting of
the Palatine Corridor Dream.
An apple and a chuckle a day keep the doctor away. The pastor said to a farmer named
Jake, “You claim you can’t donate because you owe everybody. Don’t you feel like you owe
the Lord something too?” Jake answered, “Yes, but he isn’t pushing me like the rest.”
If you see my blue three-wheeled Spyder motorcycle bopping around
the country, say hi. I won’t be able to hear you but somehow I’ll know
you care. We are so happy to be back home. Travel this life with God
as your co-pilot. Say hello to your neighbors.

by Angela ShelfMedearisCreate a home spafor Mother’s DayIf you’re looking for
an unusual (andbudget-friendly) giftMother’s Day, why notcreate a spa at home? You can pamper Momusing a few simplerecipes that will makeher feel loved fromhead to toe.
When mixing yourhome spa treatments, use fresh, high qualityingredients for thebest results. All of theingredients can befound in your refriger-ator, pantry or localgrocery store.
Never use ingredi-ents for your homespa treatments thatyou wouldn’t want toeat. Your skin, thelargest organ on yourbody, breathes and is
porous. It will absorbthe properties of theingredients you areusing.
Finally, ensure thecontainers or jars youwill be using are ster-ile by boiling them inhot water. This willhelp prevent contami-nation of your finishedproduct, which couldlead to spoilage. Donot store the assem-bled spa treatmentsany longer than theshelf life of the mostperishable ingredient.
A pretty box or bas-ket filled with jars ofyour custom-madespa treatments, a dec-orative label you cre-ate, hand-written orprinted instructionlabels, and a note ofappreciation for yourMom makes the per-fect gift for Mother’sDay!
Cucumber hair treat-ment

AccuWeather.com’s long-range forecasting team pre-dicted in October that the sea-son just past would be “anoth-er brutally cold and snowywinter for a large part of thecountry.” It should be notedthat AccuWeather.com wasn’tthe only prognosticator to get itwrong.
There was a time when aforecast like that would havebeen a no-brainer. Climate sci-entists call the era the LittleIce Age. While not a true iceage like the one that ended10,000 years ago, the Little IceAge did see average global tem-peratures drop by 2-3 degrees. Some experts say the Little IceAge began as early as 1250when the Atlantic pack icebegan to grow, however NASAdefines the period as 1550 to1850.
In North America, the winterof 1780 saw New York Harbor
freeze solid, allowing people towalk from Manhattan toStaten Island.
One way to increase the easeof getting around in winter wasto strap a pair of ice creepersto the instep of your shoeswith a leather strap. Theblacksmith made ice creepersshown here belong to Willis
“Skip” Barsheid Jr. and, basedon comparison, could dateback to the AmericanRevolution.
Ice creepers were usedbecause of the rough backcountry in America. Frozenwaterways were often used asa means of travel and icecreepers made that possible.

Lee Publications and other local business-es recently teamed up to show their supportof Animal Cruelty Awareness Week through aspecial section in the Original ValleyPennysaver. A portion of the proceeds wentdirectly to Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter tohelp with the cost of caring for the animals.Beth Snyder and Kristen Lee presented acheck from Lee Publications to Ayres VicePresident Joseph Rosemyer in the amount of$1000.
As a no-kill, quality of life shelter, Ayresprovides a safe haven for abandoned andunwanted animals until a loving home can befound. The shelter takes in more than 750
dogs and cats each year, making sure eachanimal receives all necessary shots, worm-ings and other medical treatments as needed. All adult animals are spayed or neuteredbefore being put up for adoption.
Ayres is hoping to break ground in latesummer on a 52 feet by 32 feet addition thatwill house two surgical units. This will helpreduce the stress to the animals when bring-ing them back and forth from the vet’s office.
For more information on how you can helpcall 518-673-5670, e-mail [email protected] visit their website at www.ayresan-imalshelter.com or just stop by to see the ani-mals in person.
